Romance Lovers Respond (January 11, 1999)
Karen Witkowski (YWQE15B@prodigy.com):
Very interesting interview with Kay Mussell. And I applaud her for admiting that she's changed her mind about romance novels over the past few years! I've always considered myself a feminist, and after reading over 600 romance novels the past few years, I actually think they are the most pro-female genre there is. For the most part, the heroines are portrayed as strong, capable women who can and do succeed on their own terms - and very often in times when it was difficult for women to have any kind of independence. When they do find their "hero," they choose a committed relationship because it's something that will add to all that they are, not diminish them or because they need a man to take care of them. Since the heroines insist on only the best in their heroes - true love in a committed relationship - I think romance novels serve as a good example that women should never "settle" for less in their own lives or in a relationship, and I find this very empowering for women. Susan Scribner (stlscrib@i1.net):

22. All About Romance Novels: At The Back Fence Issue #186
The same can be said about romance novels in general. Many are mediocre some are terrible. But the same can also be said of fiction in general.
http://www.likesbooks.com/186.html
Treat yourself to the AAR bookbag September 1, 2004 - Issue #186 From the Desk of Laurie Likes Books: Welcome to At the Back Fence. This time I continue our multi-column segment on beloved romance characters with my discussion on heroines to love (last time we talked about heroes; next time we'll do couples). Then AAR reviewer Leigh Thomas, our resident series romance expert, weighs in with a defense of series romance.
Heroines to Love It was a lot simpler to devise my list of favorite romance heroes than it's been to come up with my list of favorite heroines. My sense from reading the ATBF MB leads me to believe that's likely the case for many a reader, and it begs this simple question: Why? I think Laura Kinsale answered this correctly in an essay she wrote for Dangerous Men and Adventurous Women many years ago, and it's one of a few essays from the book I often turn to for answers. And I'm not alone in this; we've excerpted or otherwise written about Kinsale's essay a few times in the past, but most recently in August 2002 "In her article [Kinsale] talks about placeholding and reader identification, which are not one and the same. When a reader puts herself in the heroine's position she is placeholding - she has the same experiences of the heroine, but does not accept the heroines' reactions, words, or emotions as her own. Reader identification, on the other hand, occurs when the reader becomes the character, feels what the character feels, and is somehow under the control of that character. Because in a romance, Kinsale argues, the hero carries the book, readers identify with the hero even as they are also the 'placeholder heroine.'"

7. AOTW: In the publishing business, do you feel there is a stigma attached to romance novels and, by extension, romance authors? Are the subgenres that are being used to define novels today - romantic suspense, historical romance, romantic mystery - an attempt to eliminate any stigma attached to the romance genre? Madeline Hunter: I think that there is a stigma of sorts on all mass market genre fiction within the industry. Original paperbacks don't get much "literary" respect in general. On the other hand, romance has a huge readership, and that gives the genre some economic clout in the industry. Readers and writers of romance often complain about the unfair stigma, but they are speaking of a prejudice in the media and in the culture at large, where romance is not understood and is too often reduced to the "bodice ripper" cliche.' I don't think that the subgenres have anything to do with an attempt to eliminate the stigma. I think that they are marketing labels, so that readers who prefer one type of romance can find it easily. Nora Roberts: First, romantic suspense, etc., are hardly new. Mary Stewart wrote marvelous romantic suspense starting with

7. AOTW:
In the publishing business, do you feel there is a stigma attached to romance novels and, by extension, romance authors? Are the subgenres that are being used to define novels today - romantic suspense, historical romance, romantic mystery - an attempt to eliminate any stigma attached to the romance genre? Christina Skye: Stigma? No. Stratification? Yes. It could be our Puritan heritage showing through. Or, as many others have pointed out, it could be bias against a form of writing that is predominantly created by and for women.
Are the subgenres that are being used to define novels today - romantic suspense, historical romance, romantic mystery - an attempt to eliminate any stigma attached to the romance genre?
I'd say they simply reflect the real growth and diversity of the genre.
Judith McNaught:
As to the question about all the subgenres that are being used to define our novels today, I suspect that's simply an effort to subdivide and classify what is otherwise an enormous genre with a vague-sounding and often misleading general title. I think "Women's Fiction" would be a far more apt overall title for our genre.
Carly Phillips: In my personal opinion, I don't find stigma the reason for sub-genres within romance. I find the distinctions i.e. romantic suspense, romantic comedy, etc., are a way to let readers know what they are buying. A happy reader comes back for more. An unhappy reader is less likely to pick up that author again. For this reason, publishing houses may delineate lines between what their authors write, but the purpose is to target the correct audience ... and keep readers coming back for more.

From: who, meeeeee? Status: offline This thread can be used as a general purpose thread for discussion of Christian romance novels...likes, dislikes, trends, etc. I was going to post this in the "Do you read secular romance novels" thread but then though it was sort of off topic, so here goes... Found this quote on Christianity Today's web site "The stories … may not include alcohol consumption by Christian characters, dancing, card playing, gambling or games of chance (including raffles), explicit scatological terms, hero and heroine remaining overnight together alone, Halloween celebrations or magic, or the mention of intimate body parts."

Romance novel
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
For the medieval genre see Romance (genre)
A romance novel is a novel from the genre currently known as romance. The genre has two strict criteria:
  • the story must focus on the relationship and romantic love between a man and a woman; the end of the story must be positive, leaving the reader believing that the protagonists' love and relationship will endure for the rest of their lives.
If a novel does not fulfil those conditions, fans of the genre are likely to claim that it belongs to a related genre, such as women's fiction or chick lit , or that it is just a mainstream fiction novel. Some romance novel readers would claim that the genre has additional restrictions, from plot considerations such as the hero and heroine meeting early on in the story, to avoiding possible themes, such as neither hero nor heroine committing adultery in the course of their relationship developing. However, these are not hard-and-fast rules, and some writers deliberately write stories that may put off some readers in order to push the genre's boundaries.

Never read a romance novel? You're among the few who haven't. Over 50 million Americans read at least one in 2001 - up from 41 million in 1998. And they spent over $1.5 billion dollars purchasing those mostly paperbacks you see on the racks at grocery stores, airports and local bookstores. Indeed, the romance genre now represents over half of all popular fiction and almost one-quarter of all books sold today - according to the national organization, Romance Writers of America, based on statistics compiled from Book Industry Study Group, American Bookseller Association reports, and tallies in Ingram's catalogue of all book releases. Following is an overview of the study's conclusions. For more details, please visit www.rwanational.org. All figures are for 2001 Total sales generated by romance fiction: $1.52 billion

Well, there you go. Something to be proud of! JW and Co. = Changing the world, one stereotype-crushing, super-every-woman at a time. :)
I can remember trying to read one of the big, fat period romance novels some of my girlpals in 9th and 10th grade were obsessed with (each 'special' part underlined and dog-eared by many eager readers before me), but all the heaving bosoms, manly man-sweat and metaphorically described body parts just confused me. Plus, when she wasn't busting out of her bodice, it seemed like the woman-child at the center of the testosterone maelstorm existed just to sit around looking pretty or pitch stompy little hissy-fits which men, for some irritating reason, always found completely adorable. How come that never works in real life?
Thank god for Buffy less-than-perfect, self-reliant, courageous, fiercely unique, startlingly wise at times and oh, so heartbreakingly human in spite of her super powers. I wish I'd had a little blond Slayer to look up to when I was young....

Mary is a 42 year old mildly retarded woman who came to my office with her sister in April of 1997 with a chief complaint of epileptic seizures. She was taking Tegretol 400 mg. each morning and had been on that medication for about 3 years. Prior to that she had been on 4-5 different seizure medications in an attempt to control her seizures. The medications, including the Tegretol, did not control the seizures. Earlier in her life Mary had grand mal seizures. Currently they are focal seizures which consist of twitching starting in the left hand, moving up the left arm and continuing upwards to the face, especially around the mouth and eye. They are usually on the right side of the face. She usually does not have twitching in the legs and does not lose consciousness during these types of seizures. She does still occasionally have grand mal seizures during which she does lose consciousness. The seizures last for a minute or so and leave her with no adverse affects afterwards.

Fiesta Moon
by Linda Windsor Chapter One The sun rising above the Sierra Madres glared in Mark Madison’s eyes, despite his costly designer sunglasses, as if to punish him for daring to emerge before it reached the high point of its day. It reminded him of the receptionist at Madison Engineering Corporation, who welcomed him for a rare early morning appointment with cheer-veiled sarcasm. “Good morning, Mr. Madison,” she said but meant, That’s what you get for staying out on the town when the rest of us working stiffs have to get up early to make a living. Mark’s lips pulled into a righteous grimace as he gripped the wheel of his rental car. He did a lot more than those nine-to-fivers thought—especially Blaine—and they’d realize it now that he was temporarily on leave. “Three strikes and you’re out,” Blaine said after Mark’s most recent DUI hearing. “You’ve got to pull your life together, Mark. I’m tired of bailing you out of trouble and making excuses for you to Mother.” Mouth thinned with disapproval, he handed over Mark’s license. “If you are pulled over for anything unrelated to the project, kiss this good-bye, because you won’t need it where you’ll wind up. As it is, your performance in Mexico will determine whether you have a job when you return.”

MAIRE: Fires of Gleannmara Book I
by Linda Windsor
A Foreword, as it 'twere, from Erin's heart . . . .
Gleannmara. Ah the sound of it warms me to my earthy core. 'Tis one of me favorite parts, nestled as it was between me mist shrouded Wicklows and the Irish Sea. See, the Romans once dubbed me island Scotia and me people the Scots, which is why some of me children took that name to Scotland later on, but I digress. I am the Emerald Isle of Ireland Erin for short. Since creation, I've had all kinds of names, Hibernia bein' the first on record, and sure, I've seen all manner of mankind come and go. Before the Great Flood were some Greeks and after, well the list is considerable. Descendants of Noah's sons, Japeth and Seth/Cham were the first, the first a settling group and the later a troublesome lot of pirates. Aye, at the base of me bloodlines are the Hebrews. Then came the Greeks, Parthelan at Tallaght-the graves are there to this day, and Nemedh-whose people fled the pirates for the North, for Greece, and to Britain, which is named for one of the leaders, Briotan Maol.
