I have been writing reports and stories as long as I can remember. My sisters taught me to read by age 5, so that I was able to read to my first grade class The Little Red Hen. It's only natural that I write and edit everything from technical to romance. I have been working professionally since 1992, when I found that people kept asking me to write or edit something for them. Newspaper articles. Magazine articles. Even an Insurance Underwriters Guide. Over the years, I've written a monthly newspaper column, many magazine and newspaper articles, as well as 5 books under my name, and have contributed to 4 others. Now I am providing technical editing services to government and industry customers, as well as working on a romance novel (for the fun of it). O Caroline Cooney was born in 1947 and grew up in Old Greenwich, Connecticut. An excellent student and ambitious youth, she loved school and was involved in many different activities. By the time she was in tenth grade, Cooney played the piano for musical productions, directed a choir, and had a job as a church organist. Always an avid reader, Cooney often read series books such as THE HARDY BOYS and CHERRY AMES. These characters had a big influence on her life and in fact, she says "CHERRY AMES, STUDENT NURSE, was my reason to go to nursing school in Boston later in life." Cooney graduated from Greenwich High School in 1965 and attended various colleges, where she studied music, art, and English. It was in college that she began writing, and discovered a talent and joy in what would become an award-winning writing career. Cooney professes, "I love writing and do not know why it is considered such a difficult, agonizing profession. I love all of it, thinking up the plots, getting to know the kids in the story, their parents, backyards, pizza toppings."

Special Categories POLICY BACKGROUND Prior to the adoption of Dewey 19, the UIUC Library used a variety of special numbers for both individual and collective biographies, in addition to "B.", which was assigned for individual biography, and 921-928 for collective biography. Many of the previously used numbers for both individual and collective biographies have been discontinued in Dewey. In accordance with the policy that was established at the adoption of Dewey 19, "B." is no longer used in establishing new biography numbers. Under 920, only 920.001-920.09 and 920.7 are used for very general collective biographies. Most new (unestablished) individual biographies , as well as other, subject specific collective biographies, are currently classed by subject , adding either standard subdivision (for individual biography), or (for collective biography) as appropriate from Table 1. For purposes of establishing a consistent policy regarding the use of previously established biography numbers versus when to establish new biography numbers, CPAC voted in 1997 in favor of a

    Reviews, Reviewers, and Writing Fiction
  • Writing Technique
  • Character
First a caveat: Anything I write is from my own personal viewpoint, and I am sometimes wrong. Nonetheless, I've been in this business since 1968, am reflective by nature, and assume that what I write may be useful to other writers.
Next, I'm not writing about "literary criticism" here. Literary criticism commonly deals with more than a single book. As for "critiques": here I use the word to mean a private evaluation of a work, for consideration by the author. The sort of thing done by teachers of creative writing, or in workshops.
Reviews, though sometimes instructive to writers, serve primarily as suggestions to readers of what they might or might not like to read. Critiques, on the other hand, aim at assisting writers, hopefully improving their skills. In another sense, reviews evaluate the product. Critiques evaluate the skills used in creating it. The two processes are kin, and while they are readily distinguished, they are hard to disengage.
I'll look first at reviewing, then at critiquing.
