4. AOTW: If you write historical romances, how do you do your research? Sharon Robinson: I write contemporary romance but even that requires research.  I chose locations that I know well but need to revisit.  I spend time in restaurants, on buses, walking streets - listening to conversations.  I conduct interviews, consult professionals from the same field and research events through the Internet. Amanda Scott: I have a Master's Degree in history, and my focus was British history with an emphasis on England and Scotland and a secondary interest in Wales that has grown stronger over the years as I investigate family history. I do massive amounts of research for each book, although my son frequently says that I know more about 16th century Scotland and early 19th century England than I know about 20th or 21st century America. I'm sure he's right about that, but there is always more to learn, and since much of my story material comes from the research, and it's nearly always fascinating; it's the easiest part of writing for me. Brenda Joyce: Extensively. I hate libraries, so I tend to buy books online-nowadays you can get even the hardest to find material online-but it's pricey. I also, from time to time, con a friend into working as my assistant and she'll go to the library. For the Deadly series, I use lots of newspaper articles.

4. AOTW:
If you write historical romances, how do you do your research? Julia Quinn: After eleven books, I have a good grounding in the basics of the time period in which I write: titles, forms of address, etiquette, etc. Other than that, I look things up as I need them or pose the question to other authors. Author listservs make it really easy to pick the brains of your colleagues!
Jo Beverley: Any way I can [grin]. That's true. These days the web means we can access information in many different ways, but libraries are still key. Often I can get what I want through the public library, but if not I go to the university one.
I write in three periods - Medieval around 1100, Georgian in the 1760s, and Regency, and have been doing so for over ten years now. This means that I have a solid knowledge base on these periods, but also that I can continually be adding to it. I'll do spot research for particular plot points (at the moment it's the history of the Stuart line of kings) but my ongoing research is always into social history; into how people lived. This can be the most elusive, but it's why I love primary sources. A diary or collection of letters may only have a few pieces of new information, but those are like gold. It is irritating, however, how people in the past neglected to detail their mundane lives! For example, for all the novels, diaries, and letters from the Regency period, we still don't have a clear picture of how social dancing was organized.

I have loved all things British for longer than I can remember. So it seemed natural that when I turned to writing fiction I would write Regency romances, those uniquely English historical romances.
The history of England, Scotland, Wales and IrelandGreat Britainhas been of great interest to me for many years. All its facetssocial, political, military, literary and artisticreveal myriad details to the dedicated researcher. All its periodsfrom Elizabethan through Regency to Victorianare glittering epochs with ripples of influence throughout world history.
But the Regencythe last period of British history prior to the development of the relentless eye of the camerahas become my favourite.
I have been writing for twenty-five years and have published articles on antiques and collectibles. I have also free-lanced in business writing. I was a book-seller for nearly ten years; I owned my own bookstore for three of those enjoyable years. I am a member of the Association of Electronically Published Romance Authors, a brand-new web-based organization. I also belong to the Saskatchewan Romance Writers and I treasure the support and friendship that group offers.
For the past fifteen years I have focused my attention on fiction writing, learning the intricacies of character development, the importance of word choice, and the necessity of creating a world in which the reader can believe and dwell. I regard research for the historical novel as a joy and a necessity that involves long hours with wonderful books. The traditional Regency requires careful attention to historical detail, and a particular regard for the turn of phrase that creates another age. I take my inspiration from the work of Jane Austen, Georgette Heyer and Patricia Veryan.
