Writer's Encyclopedia A B C D ... View A-Z List Jargon kill fee on spec and SASE Top Jazz A musical style that evolved from Ragtime and served as dance music in the early twentieth century. It has now evolved into a highly improvisational music form indigenous to America and popular throughout the world. Top Jingle A jingle can be contained in a broadcast advertisement in two ways: A short jingle can alternate with a voice and background music, or the entire commercial can consist of a song whose words provide all the needed information. Most often, a combination of these two approaches is used, with stanzas of musical verse surrounding instrumental interludes that accompany readings of the script. Music for jingles is unique, ear-catching and sometimes repetitive. In creating lyrics, the writer should avoid crowding many ideas into the message and should consider the facility with which the words can be sung. The freelance writer who submits jingle material on speculation may send tape-recorded music either to an advertising agency or to a music production house that furnishes agencies with new material. As in other fields of writing, the established jingle writer will find it easier to obtain jobs than the novice, but any writer will find it difficult to market a jingle unless he is very familiar with an agency's philosophy and the workings of a particular advertising campaign. Each campaign requires a long period of careful planning, and a jingle presented at the last minute is unlikely to fit the campaign's strategy.

General Sherman's Georgia Romance
An excerpt from
Touring the Backroads of North and South Georgia by Frank Logue It is on private property beyond [the] gate that the home of Shelman Heights once stood. Now, many Georgians can say that they outsmarted Sherman's army and by various means and ended up with home and goods intact. From the use of Masonic symbols to downright conniving, Georgians went through all manner of manipulations to keep their personal property from being destroyed. But Cecelia Stovall Shelman of Shelman Heights could truthfully say that love saved her home. But not just any love. First love. And that love was William Tecumseh Sherman. Cecelia's brother, Marcellus, was attending West Point Military Academy in 1836, when she went up to attend the dances. And who should fall hardest for the dark-eyed beauty but her brother's roommate, William Tecumseh Sherman. Etowah River valley
Shelman Heights is out of picture to right.

Twentieth-century authors: Biographic and bibliographic information is just a click away
December 1999
Vol. 60, No. 11
by Michelle Mach and Cynthia D. Shirkey This column contains selected Web sites that cover English-language authors who are currently prominent or who flourished sometime in the 20th century.1 It will focus primarily on biographical and bibliographic information, with some information on literary criticism. While some primary texts from the early 20th century are available online, they were considered outside the scope of this column.
Most of the sites included are housed at academic institutions and are maintained by individual professors. In addition to these sources, Web sites of large booksellers often contain valuable information about contemporary authors, especially in the form of brief biographies, interviews, and book reviews. Newspapers and book publishers also sometimes preview opening chapters of recently published works. Starting points: meta sites and directories

The Romance Reader
An "Interview" with Georgette Heyer by Jean Mason
Georgette Heyer (pronounced “Hare”, to my amazement, since I have been calling her “Higher” for forty years) died in 1974 at the age of 72. However different their books, she shares one characteristic with J.D. Salinger: she never gave an interview to the press. So she might be puzzled and not very pleased to find herself being “interviewed” by The Romance Reader nearly a quarter of a century after her death. That this exercise is possible is owed to the generosity of the Rougier family (Heyer’s married name) in permitting author Jane Aiken Hodge access to Heyer’s private papers in order to write a biography of one of the century’s most popular British novelists. This biography, The Private World of Georgette Heyer (London: The Bodley Head, 1984) is now, unhappily, out of print. All of the quotations found below come from this well written examination of the life and work of the founder of the Regency Romance. Page references for each quotation are found in parentheses after each selection. Georgette Heyer was born to an upper middle class, professional family in 1902. Her family background was in fact far from that of the aristocrats she portrayed so frequently in her books. Her grandfather was actually a Russian immigrant. Heyer went to school, but like most girls of her day, not to university. She did read widely and growing up in a cultured home, was encouraged to develop her talent for writing. She began by writing a story for her brother who was sickly and needed to be entertained. Her father was so impressed with the effort that he showed it to a friend in the publishing business. In 1921

Introduction
The ancillary question "Why read H. P. Lovecraft?" seems to have been definitively answered, if the millions of hardcover and paperback copies of his work in this country and the translations of his stories into fifteen or more languages around the world are any testimony. Lovecraft has always had a divided readership – on the one hand youthful enthusiasts of fantasy, on the other hand a small band of writers and critics (from T. O. Mabbott to Jorge Luis Borges ) who can see beyond the tentacled monsters that adorn the covers of his books to the philosophical and literary substance of the work itself. It is perhaps this first group of readers that makes the critical establishment so dubious: how can a writer so popular be of literary worth? This is a very real inquiry, not an attenuated relic of literary aristocracy: although we are flooded today with volumes of supposed scholarship on Stephen King, there is still little reason to believe that his work merits much attention.
I Howard Phillips Lovecraft was born on 20 August 1890 in his native home at 454 (then 194) Angell Street in Providence, Rhode Island. He came from distinguished ancestry: his maternal line, the Phillipses, could trace its lineage almost to the
