The Greek World
Early Italy and the Etruscans

This gallery looks at Italy from about 1200 to 300 B.C., before its unification by the Romans and displays weaponry, jewellery, ceramics, sculptures, and funerary monuments of the Etruscans, Samnites, and other indigenous peoples, and shows the strong commercial and artistic influence of Greece through Greek colonies in southern Italy and Sicily. Bronze Age and Iron Age Europe
The period from 2000 to 700 B.C. saw technological advances in the creation of metal implements and weapons, as well as the spread of farming and the development of trade amongst various areas. The artifacts are from Europe and the British Isles, and are predominantly metal weapons and tools, as well as Neolithic pottery. Also on exhibit are striking examples of Irish gold jewellery, and a spectacular bronze shield from the 8th century BC. Rome and the Provinces
This gallery explores the Roman Empire, covering the years 31 B.C. to about A.D. 500. With the expansion of the Roman Republic into the Roman Empire, the number of provinces increased. Artifacts from Romanized Britain, Syria and Palestine, and Egypt are featured, along with displays on Roman glass, ceramic, and metalworking technologies, and fine crafts. Other subjects include Roman coinage, trade-goods and trade-patterns, architecture, burial customs in the east and the west, and entertainment and gladiatorial games. Particularly striking is a large group of sculpted Roman portraits.

http://www.classics.sbc.edu/Major.html
The Department of Classical Studies seeks to provide any student with a liberal and comprehensive view of the ancient world through firsthand contact with the Greek and Roman roots of Western civilization. Courses in Greek and Latin are designed to develop competence in the classical languages and to survey the ancient world through its greatest works of literature. Other courses, in which the readings are in English translation, offer a wider conspectus in classical literature, civilization, mythology, and history. The department is interested in students who wish to do their major work in classical studies and in students who wish to relate the study of an ancient literature to modern literature or to an allied subject. Allied subjects regularly include art, English, history, modern languages and literatures, philosophy, and religion. The department offers a major with a choice of two concentrations, Classical Language or Classical Civilization. Majors considering study abroad during their junior year are encouraged to apply to the Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies in Rome or to the College Year in Athens, both of which offer instruction in the classical languages, ancient history, and ancient art, and which sponsor a series of trips to important museums and archaeological sites. The department is a contributing member of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens, which offers summer sessions designed to provide advanced students with a deepened understanding of Greece and its antiquities through study of its monuments, history, literature, and culture.

http://carlos.emory.edu/ODYSSEY/ROME/daily.html
Daily Throughout our exploration of ancient cultures on Odyssey Online, we've used museum objects to learn about the people who made and used them. But, for the most part, we don't know the exact "context," or place, where each object was found. Archaeologists and other specialists study ancient sites and the artifacts found there to try and shed light on the cultures that produced these objects.
Pompeii with Mt. Vesuvius in background
One of our best glimpses of daily life in ancient Rome comes as a result of a natural disaster! In 79 A.D., the city of Pompeii was buried by volcanic ash from the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius . The city was caught without warning - you could say it was buried alive! It lay untouched and preserved until its discovery in the 18th century and excavation beginning in the 19th century. We will examine the remains of Pompeii and think about what they tell us about life in a 1st-century Roman town. Although most of the objects related to daily life in our collections probably didn't come from Pompeii, we'll use the city as an example of the kind of city where these objects might have been used. Choose one of these areas of Roman life to explore:

Lecture 13
A Brief Social History of the Roman Empire
Though we hurry, we merely crawl;
We're blocked by a surging mass ahead,
a pushing wall
Of people behind. A man jabs me,
elbowing through, one socks
A chair pole against me, one cracks my
skull with a beam, one knocks
A wine cask against my ear. My legs are
caked with splashing
Mud, from all sides the weight of
enormous feet comes smashing On mine, and a soldier stamps his hobnails through to my sole. One of the striking features of Roman life, whether under the Republic or Empire, was that Rome was specifically an urban culture Roman civilization depended on the vitality of its cities. There were perhaps only a handful of cities with populations exceeding 75,000, the typical city having about 20,000 permanent residents. The city of Rome, however was greater than 500,000 and some scholars have projected a population of one million or more. Like people who today visit a place like New York City, London or Paris for the first time, most people must have been overwhelmed by the hustle and bustle of Rome. Of course, if the Roman poet Juvenal (c.60-131), was an astute observer (see above), Rome must have been a rather horrifying place at the same time.
