down to the Roman Empire
The Hellenistic Age suffers from some of the same disabilities as Late Antiquity, i.e. it doesn't measure up to the brilliance of the Golden Age of Greece and of late Republican and early Imperial Rome. However, the Hellenistic world, although mostly not bothering with characteristic Greek experiments like democracy, is where Greece actually became a cosmopolitan culture, a sort of pre-adaptation for the Roman world. Just saying that the Bible begins with the book of Genesis , a Greek word, reflects the degree to which the older cultures of the Middle East came to express themselves in Greek. Several of the Hellenistic Kingdoms, mainly in Anatolia (Armenia, Pontus, Cappadocia, etc.), are domains of non-Greek peoples. Meanwhile, although the literature does not seem as brilliant, mathematics, science, and technology develop rapidly. Archimedes very nearly develops calculus. Eratosthenes estimates the size of the Earth with an accuracy that will not be surpassed until Modern times. Hero of Alexandria builds a kind of steam engine. This remains little more than a toy, but the same cannot be said of the immense engines, often of war, that Hellenstic technology otherwise produces. It is all inherited by the Romans, perhaps symbolicly with the killing of Archimedes at Syracuse by a Roman soldier in 212 (during the Second Punic War, 218-201). All of the tables are mainly based on E.J. Bickerman

Rome casts a long shadow. I am writing in the Latin alphabet. I am using the Roman calendar, with its names of the months. I use Roman names for the planets in the sky. Sentences I write contain borrowed Latin words with some frequency [e.g. sententia Latinus frequentia , for example e xempli g ratia Nietzsche said, "The Romans were the strongest and most noble people who ever lived." But this is just the problem. What Nietzsche admired was unapologetic power, conquest, and domination. This no longer seems so admirable, and the Empire founded by Julius Caesar and Augustus, as a form of government, does not look like an advance in the course of human progress. Even to Machiavelli , the despotism of Caesar was a grave retrogression in comparison to the Roman Republic . While a thoughtful Emperor, like Marcus Aurelius , expressed ideals adopted from Stoic cosmopolitanism, the unity and universality of Rome soon expressed itself as the unity and universality of a state religion , Christianity, whose intrinsic exclusivism and intolerance became characteristic of the Middle Ages. This is also

UNDERGRADUATE MODULES IN ANCIENT HISTORY STAGE 1 Two Level 1 modules are offered, one on a period of Greek history, the other on a period of Roman history. Each is: equally suitable for those coming fresh to the subject — as most do — and for anyone with an A-level background • made up of 24 lectures and 6 tutorials • assessed in the same way (two essays counting for 40%, tutorial contribution for 10%, and a final 2-hour exam for 50%) • designed to introduce the problems of reconstructing a period of Ancient History, and to begin the development of the skills this requires Any student who enters Queen’s on an Ancient History (AHY) pathway normally takes at least one of these modules; and naturally we recommend them both Note: anyone not on an AHY pathway in Stage 1 can change to such a pathway for Stages 2-3 if at least one Level 1 AHY module has been taken and passed. Ancient History 1 A period of Greek (or Roman) history concentrating on an analysis of political, social and economic aspects. Particular attention will be paid to primary sources and their use.

Ancient History at UCSB
Across two departments, History and Classics, UCSB has no fewer than five professors who identify their primary research area as Greek or Roman History. Greek History of the Archaic and Classical periods is covered by Profs. Jordan and Lee, whose specializations include history of land and naval warfare, historiography, archaeology and epigraphy, ethnic identity and religion. Prof. Morstein-Marx focuses on Republican Rome and the Early Principate, with occasional forays into Hellenistic history; special interests include historiography, oratory, political theory, Roman topography and monuments. Rome of the later Empire and Late Antiquity are represented by Profs. Drake and Digeser respectively, emphasizing paganism, Christianity, and the development of political and religious institutions. In addition, several scholars in these two departments and others work and teach in closely related areas: Roman society ( Shelton , Classics), Roman religion and Latin historiography (Hahn, Classics), Early Christianity (Thomas, Religious Studies), Greek and Roman art and archaeology (Erickson and Yegül, Classics and History of Art and Architecture). Also, the History Department has a strong Medieval program that pairs well with its strengths in Late Antiquity. Profs. Erickson, Lee and Yegül are actively associated with excavations in
