Feb. 22, 1990 Aided by a ramp, Greg Levien performs a high-jumping maneuver on inline skates Faster and sleeker than the old models, in-line skates are taking the country by storm BY DAVID RUBIEN
CHRONICLE STAFFWRITER
Hang on folks, the '90s Just might be the decade of the roller skate. I know, I know, you've heard it before. That's what everybody was saying in the 70s when, to motorists' chagrin, skates by the millions seemed to be taking over the national pavement. But now the ante's been upped, A new kind of roller skate is poised to cause a revolution in the sport, and motorist probably will be more aggravated than ever. Called in-line skates, the new designs feature a single row of thin wheels down the middle of the skate - much like the blade of an ice skate - as opposed to two rows of fat wheels on conventional roller skates. The sleek in-line skates take the sport into new dimensions of speed, maneuverability and ease, and they are rapidly eating into sales of conventional models. In the evolution of the roller skate, the metal clip-on key jobs that a lot of us used as kids were the horse-and-buggy of skates. When polyurethane wheels came along, provoking the boom in the '70s, skates entered the age of the reliable family car. The in-line skate, then, is like a turbo-charged Maserati.

Roller Skating is a Special Olympics sport with many different facets. Athletes are given the option to compete in artistic events, speed events or roller hockey. Gordon Errington, Special Olympics Jamaica, warms up prior to his gold-medal winning performance in freestyle singles competition at the 2003 Special Olympics World Summer Games. [Photo by Brendan Murphy, IRELAND OUT] In addition to the choice of sport, athletes may choose to use in-line or quad skates, depending on their strengths. For artistic competition, men and women compete separately. The competition is further divided into four levels, each level progressively more difficult and requiring different elements. Speed events offer a variety of distances for all skill levels, as well as relay and slalom events. Special Olympics offers individual skills competition to allow athletes to train and compete in basic roller skating skills. The development of these key skills is necessary prior to advancing to track and team events. Special Olympics athletes can also participate in Unified Sports® relay and team competition.

Chad Hedrick: "I do not plan on leaving the sport of inline skating. On the contrary, I wish to influence its growth. The sport has been good to me over the years and I would like to return the favor."
Meet CHAD HEDRICK: a champion on wheels and – as of recently – on blades! Born 1977 in Houston, Texas, he started off as most toddlers do: by learning to walk. At age two – in the roller skating rink operated by his father – he discovered the many advantages of having wheels attached to one’s feet. Hence his early childhood took an astronomical number of turns on quads (with four wheels attached laterally) and led him to acquire the taste for technical perfection in controlling them. He played roller hockey and raced others around the oval. Particularly for the latter, Chad soon started to make regular use of the faster inline skates (with four or five wheels attached in a line). The next stations: Chad turns professional at age 16 and becomes FIRS World Champion over 1,500 meters at 17. “It really set the tone for my inline career,”

by Clarkie But what really tops those and other skateboarding shames, is the alert a bunch of us got from Heidi Lemmon, of SPAUSA (Skate Park Association, USA). I guess while we were all asleep, reading our Nike Skateboarding ads, or watching our skateboarding "athletes" compete for big bucks on television, Heidi announces that unless we unite into a governing body of our own, the USA Rollersports from Lincoln, Nebraska is becoming the governing body of skateboarding which would have a major effect on a lot of skateboarding events and issues. So the big picture in all this is Olympic money. It's dirty money and it's huge money. The Olympics gives each country's governing body of each sport multiple millions of dollars to organize events leading up to and supporting the Olympics. As an example of monetary abuse, this is the same money the Olympics gave to Uday Hussein to support Iraq's athletic program. Of course we all know now that Uday used his millions to build torture chambers for the athletes who didn't perform well. While I don't think Rollersports will torture our skateboarders for not landing their tricks, they sure are chasing hard for that dangling carrot, not only in this country but in others as well. England and Australia we know for sure are organizing against Rollersports becoming their governing body of skateboarding.

ROLLER SPORTS HISTORY Evolution Competition Apparel Sport in Transition THE EARLY YEARS Roller skates were first invented in Europe in the 1760's. Joseph Merlin, a Belgian, invented a skate that "skittered" across the floor on small wooden wheels. The hobby didn't take off at all, and Merlin emigrated to England. In the 1800's, the Dutch used wooden wheels on their ice skates so they could continue skating in the summer. Roller skates appeared on the ballet stage in 1818 in Berlin, and were also seen on the streets of Paris. In England, this form of recreation was referred to as "rinking". The skates of those times, however, only went in a straight line - they couldn't turn - and they had no breaking mechanism, so once again the pastime faded away. Roller skating finally made its way to North America in the late 1830's, with European manufacturers still dominating skate designs for several years.
EVOLUTION OF THE ROLLER SKATE Following is a summary of the major known developments and technological improvements of the roller skate, from its origins in Europe, to the inline skates which are so popular today. And if you think that the "inline" technology is a 20 th Century invention, read on!

The Derek Parra Page
c. P. J. Baum, February 2002.
In 1984 Fran Farrell motivated me and my daughter, Maryann, to skate for the Stardust Speed Team in San Bernardino. For a couple of years we skated with Derek Dwayne (always known as DD) Parra coached by George Cottone. After the California State Speed Championships George posted the names of the local winners outside the Stardust rink. I photographed the sign and it appears to the right. DD's name appears last on the sign (arranged alphabetically). Back in 1985 DD and the rest of the team were skating for medals and ribbons like those on the upper right. One day at practice George told us that DD had been chosen for the first group of Two roller skaters to train at the US Olympic Training Center. (It was then naively assumed that rollerskating would become an Olympic sport soon.) DD was enthused about training at the USOTC but his dad was strongly opposed and it Took quite a bit of convincing by George to get him to Colorado Springs because roller skating was not a "macho" sport like football. DD, Denny Carlson, and I were assigned to the Stardust uniform committee and we adopted DD's design which had slanted red, white, and blue panels. I argued for a band of five stars along the middle panel but DD thought it presumptious. After all, someone might mistake us for Olympic skaters. At that time stars were very uncommon on roller speed uniforms but became commonplace a few years later. Subsequently we moved to Santa Barbara and DD took up training at the USOTC and moved East to train with the Olympic coach Virgil Dooley. The B/W photo on the left-below is from the US Roller Skating Magazine (USAC/RS) for July 1992 and it emphasizes the thought "HE MIGHT BE GIANT". This seems truly prophetic now but it seems to be based on the facts that "Seven months ago Derek Parra skated faster than anyone had ever skated before" (San Francisco 00:19.9) "...witnesses to the feat still can't figure out how he did it... no one... has come close. It turned Parra into a sprint threat overnight..." And later in 1992 DD took Gold in the National Banked Track Championships at the USOTC. (Muse 2nd, Glass 3rd, J Rodriguez Gold in the Womens race) .

Baby Roller-skaters Back Beijing's Olympics Bid
Forty one-year-old babies will give roller-skating performances in Tianjin and Beijing to express their support to Beijing's bid for the 2008 Olympics, activity organizers said in Tianjin on Sunday.
"It's not our purpose to train these babies to become professional roller-skaters," said organizer Guo Jianguo.
"We just want to develop the functions of their bodies and brains, and foster the team spirit among them." The babies, ranging from eight-month to 15-month old, were selected from more than 200 applicants. Though unable to walk steadily, most of these babies have already grasped basic roller-skating skills. "We also hope that the roller-skating performances will convey the healthy image of Chinese babies to the whole world." added Guo. Print Discuss It Recommend to your friend In This Section
