New Olympic Sports being considered for 2012 : include golf, rugby, karate, squash and "roller sports," while softball, baseball and modern pentathlon may be on the chopping block.
If, as Jacques Rogge has stipulated, no new sport can be added without being deleted, what would you add and what would you remove?

They're talking Summer Olympics only here, though if anyone wants to nominate, oh, Ice Dancing for removal, I wouldn't argue.

Karate would be cool. Tai Kwan Do is great to watch, and I'd like to learn more about the differences between the two styles.

Given their proverbial 15 minutes of fame on international television broadcasts, Olympians seem to leap out of each nation's population pool like rainbow troutflashy examples of the most robust athletes yetbefore plunging underwater with a splash into the anonymity of the school that produced them. So it is with Jondon Trevena, age 28. An Olympian at the 1998 Winter Games in Nagano, Japan, he's surfaced before. Now, four years later, he hopes to give another spectacular show of athleticism around the oval that made Eric Heiden (five-time gold medalist) and Bonnie Blair (five-time gold medalist) household names.

Roller skating is a Special Olympics sport with many different facets. Athletes are given the option to compete in artistic events or speed events. In addition to the choice of sport, athletes may choose to use in-line or quad skates, depending on their strengths. As in all Special Olympics Sports, athletes are grouped in competition divisions according to the athletes’ ability level, age and gender. For the artistic competition, men and women compete separately. The competition is further divided into four levels, each level progressively more difficult and requiring different elements. Speed events offer a variety of distances for all skill levels, as well as relay and slalom events. Roller skating was inaugurated at the 1987 World Games. That year the 22 participants were all United States athletes. In 1995, just eight years later, the roller-skating competition boasted 134 athletes from 11 countries. PRESS Hall of Fame 2004 Inductees George Burton George Burton is a 34 year-old Special Olympics athlete who trains and competes in athletics, bowling, long distance running and alpine and cross-country skiing. And although he enjoys all of the sports in which he participates, running is where you'll find Burton's passion.
Burton lives in Cyclone, a rural hamlet in McKean County. He became interested in sports at a young age, and he began to run with his sister and brother who competed in high school track. He would watch their track meets, but he was never one to sit on the sidelines. As he continued to train, he was able to outrun his sister, brother, and his father, too.
When Burton discovered Special Olympics, his world changed forever. He seized the opportunities that Special Olympics gave him and methodically achieved one goal after another on his way to becoming an accomplished international runner.
When Burton qualified to have his name put into the hat for selection for the Special Olympics World Summer Games in Minneapolis in 1991, he was ecstatic. When his name failed to be drawn, he was not nearly as disappointed as his coaches and family were. He simply said, "When are the next World Games?" He continued his quest to compete internationally and after learning that the 1995 World Games would include a marathon, George began to train for that grueling race.

These skilled skaters show the kids how it's done
An old-time pastime carries through a lifetime for a couple who have spent 25 years competing together on the roller rink.
By SHAWNTAYE HOPKINS Published June 26, 2005 INVERNESS - The roller rink brings to mind middle-schoolers who race in circles, play tag and jive to pop music. Few can imagine a bunch of 40-somethings hunched over, whizzing past each other. Now add dancing to the skating and about 30 years of age for the skaters. Some might call that crazy. But John and Sharon Wadsworth say most kids these days know little about roller skating. At a recent statewide roller dance competition, the couple - he's 71, she's 68 - glided in unison to the 1950s tune Mr. Sandman.

She skates faster, preparing for a lift, her athletic legs powering her lean frame in unison with partner Andy Minieri, clad in a T-shirt and matching blue velvet pants. He lifts Amie above his head, and her foot almost grazes the disco ball hanging from the ceiling. Andy spins, and gently lowers Amie back to the plastic-coated rink floor. The pair circle the Skate World rink, past the fuchsia and turquoise dots and zigzags on the walls, as an organ arrangement of "Makin' Whoopee" plays in the background. "It's scary watching her," says Pat, Amie's mom, as she watches her daughter from the sidelines. "Every time they do a lift, I think 'don't drop her, don't drop her'and she has been dropped."

As an inliner he was a three-time national champion two-time overall World Champion, two-time World record holder (1500m and 42K) and earned eighteen individual gold medals. He was the most decorated athlete at the 1995 Pan-Am Games winning 5 golds, 2 silver and a bronze medal. His award collection include everything but an Olympic Medal. Unfortunately for Derek, because inline skating is not an Olympic sport, roller-skating would never provide him with a chance to win that medal. So in 1996, at 25 years old, an age when most skaters begin to think of retiring, Derek decided to switch from inline to ice skates to chase after that medal. Just two years later, he proved to the speed skating world that his medal pursuit was for real when he earned a spot on the 1998 US Olympic Team. Today, he is a two-time US National All-round Champion, holder of two American records, and the reigning North American Champion. He has set his sights on completing his medal collection next February at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympic Games. On the Ice: 2002 Winter Olympic Gold and Silver Medalist 2001 North American Champion

Background Information Sports and the Olympic Tradition - An Important Part of Slovenia's Cultural Heritage March 2001 "You are a small country but great at sport!" These were the words of the President of the International Olympic Committee Juan Antonio Samaranch, who visited Slovenia in 1993, describing the extremely rapid development of sport and Olympic ideas in the country. Upon becoming an individual member of the Olympic family in 1992, new horizons opened up for the development of sport and Olympic ideals in Slovenia. Sport and the Olympic tradition are important parts of Slovenia's cultural heritage. In his book Slava vojvodine Kranjske ("The Glory of the Duchy of Carniola") the renowned historian Janez Vajkard Valvasor wrote about the skiers of the Blo¹ka planota (Bloke plain) as early as 1689. The early gymnastic clubs that formed in the mid-19th century brought sports closer to people and made a significant contribution to shaping Slovenian national consciousness. The development of modern sport in Slovenia is inseparably connected to the engineer
