Located in Hoquiam Aberdeen on Washington State's Olympic Peninsula and near Ocean Shores and the Coast. History of the Castle
Welcome to Hoquiam's Castle! This beautiful 19th century Victorian-style mansion is located in the historic town of Hoquiam, the gateway to the magnificent Olympic Peninsula in Washington State. The home is listed on both state and National Historic Registries, and was recently listed in National Geographic's America's Great Houses.
Building of this stately 10,000 square foot home overlooking the town of Hoquiam began in 1897 by lumber baron Robert Lytle, and was completed in 1900. Lytle acquired his fortune from his electric saw mill which was the first of its kind on the west coast. The Lytle family lived in this unique home until they moved to Portland in 1910 and generously gave it to their niece Theadosia Bale as a wedding gift. Theadosia lived in "the castle" until the late 1950's. Upon her death, almost everything in the house was auctioned off the the house itself was put on the market for $14,000.
The house was subsequently left abandoned for several years, the neighborhood children used to slip in and play haunted house and roller skate. In 1968 the house was purchased by the Watson family. The Watsons were responsible for much of the restoration and for the collection of many

Background Information Sports and the Olympic Tradition - An Important Part of Slovenia's Cultural Heritage March 2001 "You are a small country but great at sport!" These were the words of the President of the International Olympic Committee Juan Antonio Samaranch, who visited Slovenia in 1993, describing the extremely rapid development of sport and Olympic ideas in the country. Upon becoming an individual member of the Olympic family in 1992, new horizons opened up for the development of sport and Olympic ideals in Slovenia. Sport and the Olympic tradition are important parts of Slovenia's cultural heritage. In his book Slava vojvodine Kranjske ("The Glory of the Duchy of Carniola") the renowned historian Janez Vajkard Valvasor wrote about the skiers of the Blo¹ka planota (Bloke plain) as early as 1689. The early gymnastic clubs that formed in the mid-19th century brought sports closer to people and made a significant contribution to shaping Slovenian national consciousness. The development of modern sport in Slovenia is inseparably connected to the engineer

Figure Skating Fiction
Modern Figure Skating Fiction, or Skatefic, started with The Strong and the Sequined in 1997 and exploded in popularity with the publication of the serial version of On the Edge in early 1998. By the end of 1998, a thousand readers waited on the every move of Sasha, Alexi and Elayne with baited breath. Every four years, with the Olympic games, a new crop of authors and serials springs up like an elite skater launching into a triple toe-loop. The new authors venture bravely into new skating serials only to fall by the wayside before the next Olympic games. Private Ice is one of very few sites which dates from the 1998 Olympics. Because Private Ice hosts four of the five most popular modern figure skating fiction serials, Private Ice remains the premier site for figure skating fiction. As long as there is figure skating, there will be SkateFic. And skating fans will find figure skating fiction at Private Ice.

ROLLER SPORTS HISTORY Evolution Competition Apparel Sport in Transition THE EARLY YEARS Roller skates were first invented in Europe in the 1760's. Joseph Merlin, a Belgian, invented a skate that "skittered" across the floor on small wooden wheels. The hobby didn't take off at all, and Merlin emigrated to England. In the 1800's, the Dutch used wooden wheels on their ice skates so they could continue skating in the summer. Roller skates appeared on the ballet stage in 1818 in Berlin, and were also seen on the streets of Paris. In England, this form of recreation was referred to as "rinking". The skates of those times, however, only went in a straight line - they couldn't turn - and they had no breaking mechanism, so once again the pastime faded away. Roller skating finally made its way to North America in the late 1830's, with European manufacturers still dominating skate designs for several years.
EVOLUTION OF THE ROLLER SKATE Following is a summary of the major known developments and technological improvements of the roller skate, from its origins in Europe, to the inline skates which are so popular today. And if you think that the "inline" technology is a 20 th Century invention, read on!

And, what an introduction he made! He wore his new skates to a party in London, where he crashed into an expensive mirror (the first recorded check!). Other inventors produced some roller skate models, most with in-line wheels to imitate an ice skating blade. The first patent ever taken out on a roller skate was for an in-line skate in 1819. Olympic Committee Sends Roller Sports a Second Questionnaire
Federation Asked to Detail Continental Championships, Other Issues By Robert "Just the Factoids" Burnson The International Olympic Committee has asked for more information about roller sports' proposal for inclusion in the 2012 Olympic Games. Among the questions is a request for more detail about how skaters would be selected for the Games, said James Pollard, a member of the International Roller Skating Federation's Central Committee. Roller sports is one of five sports invited to submit proposals for the 2012 Olympic Games. The others are golf, rugby, squash and karate. "Just being on the list is fantastic," Pollard said. "But that they are asking more questions is also fantastic. ... It's when they are not asking questions that you have to worry." The federation has proposed two days of speed skating for the Games. The competitors would be chosen at five continental championships. (

The concept was born in the early 1960s when Shriver started a day camp for people with intellectual disabilities. She saw that individuals with intellectual disabilities were far more capable in sports and physical activities than many experts thought. Since 1968, millions of children and adults with intellectual disabilities have participated in Special Olympics.

City History City Services Online Services / Forms Search FAQ's ... city history table of content > entertainment and recreation - the rollerdrome Culver City History - The Rollerdrome Family was important to Harry Culver. The Rollerdrome was a perfect example of how Culver wanted to provide for Culver City parents and their children. Today that site is Tellefson Park, a bicentennial dedication in 1976. People came from miles around to skate at the Rollerdrome. It was a wooden structure with a gently rounded parabola-like roofline. The height offered by this curve accommodated a mezzanine in the front of the building, where the organist played. Many, like Virgie Eskridge, remember Mr. Osterloh, the musician who filled the building with cheery roller skating music. Then there was the bell, and "Clear the Floor," to prepare for a variety of skating opportunities like "Ladies Only." Virgie included trips to the Rollerdrome as an example of the freedom children had growing up here in earlier days, and just one of the entertainment options. Another of my favorite resources, Ethel Ashby, described the Rollerdrome as "a grand place to go, just wonderful." Ethel and her fiancée met friends there regularly on Friday nights and sometimes mid-week during the early 1930s. She remembers the skating differed, with variations of "Men Only," "Ladies Only," "Singles Skate," and "Couples Skate." According to Ethel, when it was a call for all men, they often raced around the rink "like a bunch of whippets." The "Couples Skate" was her opportunity to learn dancing on roller skates. During "Singles Only," Ethel said it was a time for "the young kids to show off." They exhibited a lot of turns and jumps.

Out of Miami, Rodriguez Is Warming to Ice
By Amy Shipley
Washington Post Staff Writer
Monday, February 2, 1998; Page D1
"I think every athlete dreams of going to the Olympics," says Jennifer Rodriguez, a former in-line skater turbed speedskater. (Dan Currier/AP)
Despite her early difficulties, Rodriguez didn't merely get the hang of speedskating. She went from awful to one of the nation's best in 28 months. Several weeks ago, she won a spot on the U.S. speedskating team, making the transition that her boyfriend, KC Boutiette, also made, going from an elite in-line skater to a world-class speedskater. The satisfaction of this achievement is enhanced by her background. When the Games get underway with Saturday's Opening Ceremonies, she will become the first Hispanic athlete to compete in a Winter Olympics. She also is believed to be the only Miamian. Rodriguez's father, Emilio, was born in Cuba; her mother, from Buffalo, is not of Latin descent. "It's not my main focus but it's in the back of my head," Rodriguez, 21, said after a practice session at the M-Wave, the speedskating venue. "But when I heard I was the only person from Miami to compete in the Winter Olympics and plus to be the only Cuban, that's a really neat thing."

Skating Biography Little did Jack and Pat Lipinski know that when they took their daughter to the local ice skating rink that they would set off a spark in their daughter that would never die down. A simple desire of a little kid wanting a care bear and a mother trying to keep her child busy helped to set the stage for someone to become an Olympic Champion—and it all happened in less than 10 years. Lipinski tied on her first pair of skates when she was 6 years old. Her dad vividly remembers his daughter “flopping around” the ice during her maiden voyage onto the slippery surface. “I was a mess. My ankles bent in. My elbows pointed out,” stated Lipinski on her rookie visit to the rink. While her parents went indoors for hot chocolate, tiny Tara remained on the ice and to her parents’ amazement, Tara had transferred her roller skating knowledge to the ice. Everything came to Lipinski naturally; she progressed through skating lessons at the University of Delaware Ice Skating Science Development Center in no time with Scott Gregory—her first coach. In less than 6 years, she advanced from her first lesson to a national medallist. Mother and daughter were on the move again in 1995—this time to Bloomfield Hills, Michigan—to train with Richard Callaghan. It was at this time Tara entered the senior division of ladies skating—here she was playing with the big dogs and she would not disappoint. Lipinski began training at the
