Racing - August 2003
Hope your summer is going great. Can you believe it is August already? I guess you know what that means. We are one month away from the annual winter ski trip sign-up picnic. That gets me excited. I try to stay in shape year around, but when September rolls around I get a little more serious about ski training. When I go skiing I like to spend most of my time skiing not resting in the lodge. For you roller bladers out there I would like to get a group together starting in September for some serious roller blading. I know last year I was pretty much a beginner on roller blades, but with the help of Bob Burk and Connie Pounds I learned pretty quick and learned to carve on roller blades. I believe roller blading helped me out a lot in my skiing. I just learned that we have a die hard roller blader out there, Moe Daraie , who roller blades at least 3 or 4 times a week. I have not had the opportunity to ski with Moe, but I hear he is an excellent skier. I just bet that rollerblading has helped him become a great skier. So dust your roller blades off or go buy some new ones. is a great place to buy roller blades. If you’re a beginner there will always be somebody to help you out. So remember we will start roller blading in September. Roller blading is one of the best ways to imitate skiing. Of course you can start right now and get a head start on your rollerblading. I know I need to.

FISCAL FITNESS - MAY 1996
Economics of snowboarding
by Ron Ross
SKIING IS ONE OF THE MOST ENJOYABLE ACTIVITIES I've ever tried, but by choice, I may never ski again. Why not? Because I've been bitten by the snow boarding bug. This recent affliction, along with the not-so-recent affliction of being an economist, got me thinking about the larger context of the snow boarding phenomenon. A few years ago when snow boarding became popular, skiers resented the invasion of what they considered wild, rowdy, impolite, hormone-charged adolescent snow boarders on their slopes. Most of that resentment has now passed, and boarders and skiers coexist peacefully. Skiers may not realize it, but the snow boarding phenomenon is to their advantage. Because of snow boarding, skiers have more options. How so? Most of the costs of running a ski resort are "fixed" as opposed to "variable." The ski lifts, for example, cost about the same regardless of how many people use them. Therefore, the more people who use the lifts, the less the cost per user. Resort owners receive more revenue, resorts become more profitable, and profits encourage additional resorts. Surprisingly, many ski lifts now even operate in the summer, transporting people and their mountain bikes to the tops of the mountains for the exciting ride down the slopes.

THE WARREN SENTINEL Article date: November 18, 1999 From toxic sludge to roller-blading— Avtex awaits rebirth as recreational space The most vivid reminder of Avtex in the conservancy area is its smell. The rotten-egg smell is sulfur coupled with the dustiness of fly ash. By Teresa Brumback Atop Avtex’s "Fly ash Mountain," overlooking stagnant pools of poisonous water alongside the Shenandoah River, a small group of officials pondered hiking, biking trails, and a canoe launching area at the site. Roughly 125 acres of the scarred and tainted terrain on the river flood plain at Avtex has been set aside as recreation/conservancy space, according to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region III spokesman Richard Kuhn. Along with the tainted ponds and Fly Ash Mountain — a 75 foot tall pile of coal dust — the most vivid reminder of Avtex in the conservancy area is its smell. The rotten-egg is sulfur coupled with the dustiness of fly ash, he said. Front Royal officials and media representatives were invited to tour the spot with EPA officials during a cold and blustery Monday afternoon.

In-line skating, not just a fad
Kristin Carmichael
Dimensions Editor Roller hockey, in-line fitness skating, speed skating and good old recreational skating have all become a part of some people's everyday lifestyles. For some it is even a form of transportation. So, what some may say is a fad, is actually here to stay. Opportunities to in-line skate are arising everywhere, from transportation to recreational use. One of these opportunities happens to be available at Chico State University. The new Roller Blading class met for the first time Friday where neither students nor teacher had any idea what to expect. Being a novice herself, Roller Blading teacher Gail Lipton asked that her students let her know what they want to get out of the class. "You guys are the pioneers as far as what we're going to do with the class," she said to the 30 enrolled students. And although the class met at the tennis courts Friday, Lipton is hoping the students have flexible schedules so they can meet at other places such as a bike path in Paradise.
