It is a good idea to rent a pair of skates the first time you try in-line skating. This will be an inexpensive way of deciding if you like it or not. However, owning your own skates from day one can be a better idea. With a good in-store fitting service, your skates will fit snugly and comfortably, giving you the best possible control and enjoyment so that you progress quickly, whereas an old pair of well-worn rental skates may not be so good. Once you have bought them, your determination will be greater, and let's face it, if you can afford them, there's nothing like having your own! And don't forget that after paying for five or six rentals, you could have bought your own brand new pair in the first place. Comfort is the priority when you are buying skates. Your skates won't feel like slippers, but your feet should be comfortable and there should be no pressure points. Make sure that the skate is a snug, all-round fit. Your toes must not be pushed right up against the end of the shell, and you should be able to wiggle your toes. Your heel should be held firmly but comfortably, and you should be able to flex your knees and ankles forward. Most good skates are adjustable so that the fit is as perfect as possible. Before you buy, make sure you can adjust them yourself while they are still on your feet. Before you even try on a skate, however, you must be aware of the gliding potential of your skates. Spin the wheels with your hand; they should move silently and freely. If they grind or stick, the bearings, and probably the wheels too, are likely to be of poor quality, and this is likely to reduce your speed and, therefore, your enjoyment when you try to glide.

BOLSA CHICA STATE BEACH
Location: Pacific Coast Highway between Golden West Street and Warner Avenue Beach Hours: 6:00 am - 10:00 pm
Camping Reservations: 800-444-7275 The name Bolsa Chica is actually Spanish for "little pocket" and well named if one adds 'of sunshine'. As the visitor drives along the Pacific Coast Highway, the cityscape of factories and derricks may be daunting, but this is a transitory experience. In reality, Bolsa Chica State Park and Reserve soon appears and at this moment, the visitor's vision is captivated by one and a half miles of the Pacific Ocean's stunning shoreline on one side, and a three hundred and fifty acre marine estuary on the other. It isn't only the view that attracts over one million visitors to Bolsa Chica each year. More likely it's the many amenities, coupled with the opportunity to connect with nature. Here, beachgoers can camp overnight in RV campgrounds (water and electric hook-ups available), breakfast on windswept shores, zip along an ocean-view path on bikes and roller-blades, windsurf, bird watch, surf, hike, surf fish, and dine over a campfire. And all the while, flocks of birds, California Brown Pelicans and Seagulls for example, glide gracefully along the sea, sailing on warm air currents, south in the winter and north in the summer.
