Recovery Outlines for Critical, Endangered and Vulnerable Australian Rodents
Recovery Outline - Bramble Cay Melomys 1 Family Muridae 2 Scientific Name Melomys rubicola Thomas, 1924 3 English Name Bramble Cay Melomys 4 Intra-specific Taxa None. 5 Species Survival Status
IUCN Endangered : occurs on a single sand cay that is eroding due to natural processes. The sand cay is approximately 700m in circumference.
Mace and Lande Critical : single population on small cay which is likely to disappear by natural processes. 6 Former Distribution
Thomas (1924) suggested the occurrence of this species on another island but this has never been substantiated. Extensive surveys by Limpus (Qld Department of Environment and Heritage), Miller (Qld Department of Environment and Heritage), and Heatwole (Australian Museum) in the Torres Strait and the Northern Great Barrier Reef have failed to locate this species anywhere but Bramble Cay, Torres Strait. The Bramble Cay Melomys has not been identified among the New Guinea fauna. 7 Current Distribution
Bramble Cay, Torres Strait.

North Dakota's
Western Burrowing Owl ( Athene cunicularia hypugea
Status: Former Candidate (Note: As of February 28, 1996, this species is no longer listed as a Candidate species. However, it remains a species of management concern.)
Historical Status:
The burrowing owl's historical range is believed to be similar to its present range, however, its abundance and distribution is suspected to be in decline.
Present Status:
The burrowing owl's range extends from the prairies of southern Canada to South America. More specifically, this owl breeds from southern interior British Columbia (nearly extirpated) to southern Alberta, southern Saskatchewan, southern Manitoba south through western United States, central Mexico, central and southern Florida, West Indies, and locally in much of South America. In the southern parts of their range, burrowing owls are resident, but more northern populations, like those in North Dakota, they are migratory. This owl winters regularly in El Salvador and western Panama. The states of California, New Mexico, and Arizona are important wintering areas in the United States.
Habitat:
Burrowing owls are associated with heavily grazed tracts of mixed-grass prairie, particularly where there are burrows created by large rodents, such as prairie dogs and Richardson ground squirrels.

WILDLIFE COMMISSION DOWNLISTS RIVER OTTER FROM ENDANGERED TO THREATENED STATUS
Colorado's river otter population has shown a strong recovery.
The Colorado Wildlife Commission downlisted the river otter from endangered to threatened on the state’s protected species list Thursday, marking the success of the Division of Wildlife’s (DOW) efforts to recover the species. Greg Walcher, Executive Director of the Department of Natural Resources, called the downlisting a victory for Colorado.
“We have known for some time that Colorado’s river otter population has shown a strong recovery that warrants a downlisting, and I am proud of the experts at the DOW who have made this happen,” said Walcher. “The future of land management and the health of wildlife populations in Colorado will hinge on the ability of states to recover endangered species, and this is a great step toward that goal.”
Otters, natives that once inhabited many of Colorado’s streams, were last recorded in the state in the early 1900s. DOW biologists began working to recover the species in 1976 and have released more than 100 into streams from Rocky Mountain National Park to the Dolores River in southwestern Colorado.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 6, 2003 ENDANGERED AND THREATENED SPECIES, WILDLIFE HABITAT ENHANCEMENT ARE FOCUS OF WILDLIFE PRESERVATION FUND PROJECTS SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - Projects focusing on the protection and restoration of threatened and endangered species and restoring and maintaining wildlife habitat are being funded this year thanks to support of the Illinois Wildlife Preservation Fund, a program of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. "Dozens of projects that assist in wildlife conservation efforts throughout Illinois are made possible this year thanks to the generous support of donors who make a tax return checkoff contribution or simply send a check to the Wildlife Preservation Fund,” said Glen Kruse, IDNR’s Biodiversity Program Manager. “Every dollar donated to the fund has a long term benefit for wildlife and those who enjoy wildlife.” The Wildlife Preservation Fund is a voluntary contribution check-off option on the Illinois state income tax form. Nearly 500,000 people have made financial contributions to the fund totaling more than $3.9 million during the past 19 years. The funds have been used to support more than 750 projects ranging from habitat enhancement to species restoration.

Rodents Not Endangered Species
Liberty Matters News Service
Extensive studies conducted by researchers at the Denver Museum of Nature and History have shown that the Preble meadow jumping mouse is not a distinct species from other common mice and does not deserve protection under the Endangered Species Act. The scientists concluded, through painstaking DNA trials, that Prebel's (Zapus hudsonius preblei) is genetically indistinguishable from another mouse (Zapus hudsonius camPESTris) that infests wide areas of Wyoming, Montana, the Dakotas and Canada. The FWS, however, has refused to remove the mouse from the list, saying the "available science doesn't justify yanking federal protections…" according to Ralph Morgenweck, director of the Service's regional office in Lakewood, CO. Governor Freudenthal said FWS should "direct its scarce resources to an animal that actually needs protection and recovery." In another development, Senate Minority Leader, Tom Daschle (D-SD), sent a letter to FWS director Steven A. Williams, urging the agency to drop consideration of prairie dogs for protection under the ESA. "The notion that the prairie dog is threatened defies logic," the Senator wrote. [A] multi-state study of prairie dog populations recently concluded that the species was biologically viable and therefore did not meet the definition of an endangered species" he continued.

A threatened species is a species that is in risk of becoming endangered. It isvery important that Sometimes they excavate marmots and other rodents.

Threatened and Endangered Wildlife There are a number of wild species in Colorado that are either endangered or threatened. An endangered species is one that is in such danger that it could become extinct. A threatened species is a species that is in risk of becoming endangered. It is very important that everyone realizes what wildlife species are already endangered and are threatened, so we all can help protect the diverse wildlife Colorado has to offer.

Bald Eagles Top Description: The bald eagle(Haliaeetus leucocephalus), named because of its white head, is found only in North America, and it's the continent's second largest bird of prey. Only the California condor, also on the federally endangered list, is larger. Here in the United States, the bald eagle is recognized as the country's national symbol, a distinction it has held since 1872. Young bald eagles are dark brown in color when they fledge the nest at about 12 weeks of age. Their head and tail feathers turn predominantly white in the fourth or fifth year. Adult males weigh about eight to nine pounds. Females are slightly larger, about 10 to 14 pounds. The birds' length is 31 to 37 inches with a wingspan of 6 to 7.5 feet.
Range: Historically, bald eagles lived throughout North America from Alaska to Newfoundland, and from Florida to California. But numbers started to decline in the last century due to nest damage caused by pesticides, human disturbance and loss of trees for nesting habitat. Since the bald eagle was placed on the Endangered Species List and the pesticide, DDT, was banned, bald eagle populations have rebounded.
