ABOUT US
Our research activities are focused on the design and control of a class of robotic systems worn or operated by humans to augment human mechanical strength, while the wearer's intellect remains the central control system for manipulating the robot. Human power extenders can be used to maneuver heavy loads with great dexterity, speed, and precision, in factories, shipyards, airports, construction sites, and warehouses.
Our research work on fundamentals of human power augmentation has resulted in a wealth of knowledge and experience in various robotic disciplines such as force control, impedance control, sensors, locomotion, compact transmission systems, advanced haptic devices, DSP embedded controllers, biomemtic systems, humanoid robots, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electric actuators.

Announcements The is a unit of the School of Engineering Science at Simon Fraser University, located on Burnaby mountain, in a suburb of Vancouver British Columbia . The former Intelligent Robotics and Manufacturing System Laboratory has been renamed iDEA Lab because it more accurately describes our current focus emphasizing leading edge research in distributed intelligent systems. Simon Fraser University is a mid-size Canadian university with 25,000 students and over 100 programs. SFU has received wide acclaim in recent years for being rated as Canada's best comprehensive university five times in the annual rankings of Maclean's magazine. Under the direction of Prof. William A. Gruver , the iDEA Lab conducts research in distributed intelligent systems with application to manufacturing and supply chains, robotics and sensing, and infrastructure systems for energy and transportation. A particular specialty of the iDEA Laboratory is the development and application of holonic and multi-agent system technologies for manufacturing automation and distributed energy systems. Students and staff of the iDEA Lab have extensive research interaction with the Institute for Fuel Cell Innovation of the National Research Council of Canada . Collaboration has included companies, research laboratories, and universities in Canada, China, France, Germany, Japan, Korea, and the United States, including membership in the Holonic Manufacturing Systems (
