http://www.evobot.com/
Evobot.com
An "Evobot" is a robot with the ability to learn, adapt to changing environments, and selectively reproduce (in software and/or hardware) in a manner that imitates living organisms. Complex, successful organisms can result from the synergistic operation of simple, automatic adaptive mechanisms. In the field of evolutionary robotics, these concepts are applied to robot design. Rather than design robots whose hardware and software are fully specified, evobots are created with simple, adaptive mechanisms and selective reproductive capability. Over time, their programming adapts to their environment. One way to create evobots with adaptive capabilities is to use neural networks. A neural network begins as a flexible, highly-randomized array of densely inter-connected signal processing units. Interaction between the neural network and its environment changes the relative strength and growth of inter-connections and nodes. Connections that are confirmed by subsequent environmental interactions are reinforced and grow. Connections that are not confirmed are weakened and atrophy. This creates an adaptive loop between signal processing patterns and environmental reality. Whether through independent interactions with the environment or interactions influenced by a third-party, the structures of neural networks adapt in response to the environmental stimuli that they encounter. Inorganic neural networks are often called Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs). Both organic and inorganic neural networks process information using highly parallel, distributed, probabilistic signal processing. Neural networks excel at pattern recognition problems that are not well addressed by sequential processing such as voice recognition, navigation, weather prediction, economic forecasting, and organic thinking.

FIRST Robotics Mission The FIRST Robotics Competition is an exciting, multinational competition that teams professionals and young people to solve an engineering design problem in an intense and competitive way. The program is a life-changing, career-molding experience and a lot of fun. In 2004 the competition will reach more than 20,000 students on over 900 teams in 27 competitions. Our teams come from Canada, Brazil, Great Britain, and almost every U.S. state. The competitions are high-tech spectator sporting events, the result of lots of focused brainstorming, real-world teamwork, dedicated mentoring, project timelines, and deadlines.
Colleges, universities, corporations, businesses, and individuals provide scholarships to our participants. Involved engineers experience again many of the reasons they chose engineering as a profession, and the companies they work for contribute to the community while they prepare and create their future workforce. The competition shows students that the technological fields hold many opportunities and that the basic concepts of science, math, engineering, and invention are exciting and interesting. History of the Years FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) was founded in 1992 by Dean Kamen as a non-profit organization dedicated to increasing awareness in high schools about science, technology, teamwork, and the "real world" but in a fun way.

About PHRED Vision Statement The vision of our team is to plan and host robotic events that are both fun and intellectually stimulating to further involve the community and school in science and technology. We provide motivation and support for students within our club in the areas of engineering, math and science. Furthermore, we encourage, motivate and provide support for students with many diverse interests including graphic arts, marketing and business. Mission Statement The mission of the FIRST robotics team at Philomath High School is to further the ideas of the FIRST organization. Specifically, we strive to create awareness and excitement for science and technology within our school and community. Team History 2001 - 2003 The FIRST team at Philomath High School had its first meeting in the spring of 2001 to discuss forming a team to compete in the 2002 season. The interest was there, and that fall the team was officially founded. Our chief mentor, Doug, spread the word that we needed engineers for mentors. Since he worked at Hewlett-Packard, we ended up with mostly Hewlett-Packard engineers as mentors. The team had two-hour meetings every Friday starting in September of 2001. Two LEGO Mindstorms kits were donated to the team by a student and the robot building was on. During the Friday meetings students divided into two teams to accomplish a task with the LEGO kit. We progressed from simple drivetrain robots to arms that could pick objects up, and robots that could follow a line using the infrared sensor. During these Friday meetings we also devised a name for our organization, Philomath High Robotics Engineering Division, or PHRED.

Carnegie Mellon's National Robotics Engineering Consortium hosts open house to showcase robotic technologies
PITTSBURGH Carnegie Mellon University's National Robotics Engineering Consortium (NREC), assisted by the newly formed Pittsburgh Robotics Initiative (PRI), will host Pittsburgh Robotics Day, a celebration and showcase of robotics technology and industry in western Pennsylvania. Robotics is experiencing a rebirth in the western Pennsylvania region. As many as 80 companies, and the NREC, are involved in robotic and automation-related technologies. The PRI, housed at Carnegie Mellon Research Institute, was funded with a grant from the Heinz Foundation. Its goal is to make the region as synonymous with robotics and automation as it once was with steel. Backed by an initial $3 million grant from NASA, the Robotics Engineering Consortium opened in the summer of 1996 to commercialize mobile robotic technologies NASA has developed over the years by working directly with American industry. It began with three sponsors focused on projects in agriculture, excavation and materials handling. Today, with NASA's continued support, NREC scientists are working with more than 18 companies, industrial consortia and government agencies on projects including, automated harvester control, forktruck automation, machine sensors and controls, automated turf care, automated pot handling and tree surveying for the nursery industry, operator aids for mining, robotic gas line inspection and repair, automated paint stripping of ships, citrus spraying, grain handling and driver drowsiness monitoring.
