From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
The Roaring Twenties refers to the North American historical period of the 1920s, which has been described as "one of the most colorful decades in American history ." The decade encapsulates a fascinating story, beginning with the return of young soldiers from the fronts of the First World War and emergence of a new and confident face of the modern womanhood , and ending with the sad note of the Black Tuesday harbinger of the Great Depression . The years of the Roaring Twenties are marked by several inventions and discoveries of far reaching consequences; emergence of unprecedented industrial boom and accelerated consumer demand and aspirations, coupled with significant changes in the lifestyle ; and a series of events, national as well as the international , which shaped a large part of the history of the 20th century. The Roaring Twenties started in North America and spread to Europe after the aftereffects of the first world war ceased. In Europe, the period after the First World War was marked by a deep recession and many years of rebuilding and coming to terms with the vast human cost of the conflict. Unlike after

The Charge "Look, George, there's a new kind of setup you don't understand. Guys don't go around tearing things apart like we used to. People try to build things up, and that's what Lloyd's tryin' to do. In this new setup, well, you and me just don't belong, that's all."—Eddie Bartlett Opening Statement It may come to pass that, at some distant date, we will be confronted with another period similar to the one depicted in this photoplay. If that happens, I pray that the events, as dramatized here, will be remembered. In this film, the characters are composites of people I knew, and the situations are those that actually occurred. Mark Hellinger Facts of the Case When American doughboy Eddie Bartlett (James Cagney, The Strawberry Blonde ) returns to New York from the trenches of World War I, he finds that there is no place in the postwar world for a battle-weary soldier. Unable to find a job, Eddie turns to bootlegging and soon builds a successful underworld empire, using a cab company as a front, with the legal aid of his wartime friend, idealistic young lawyer Lloyd Hart (Jeffrey Lynn

The Roaring Twenties he United States emerged from the Great War as a rich and powerful nation. American life changed dramatically in the 1920s, which saw the first trans-Atlantic phone call, the first movie with sound, the first enclosed car at popular prices, and the discovery of penicillin. This car, rigged with two pistols, was used to measure a motorist's reaction time in applying the brakes. Also booming in the 1920s were the building and construction and automobile industries, both of which received support from the nation’s principal physical science research laboratory. NIST recommended revisions aimed at achieving greater uniformity in local building and plumbing codes and zoning regulations and published a popular handbook for prospective home buyers. NIST staff, in partnership with Underwriters Laboratories and the National Fire Protection Association, began developing methods to test the fire endurance of building structures; this work led to test procedures that became ubiquitous throughout the world. Automobile research focused on two issues that would come to dominate the history of this technology—fuel econ-omy and safety. Amid warnings that the nation’s known petroleum reserves would be depleted in as little as 10 years, the Institute helped conserve gasoline by identifying the characteristics of engines, fuels, and oils that enhanced operating efficiency. To help establish safe driving speeds, it also investigated brakes, the braking ability of cars, and the reaction time of drivers in applying brakes.

Prominent historians — Donald L. Miller, Pauline Maier, Louis P. Masur, Waldo E. Martin, Jr., Douglas Brinkley, and Virginia Scharff — present America's story as something that is best understood from a variety of perspectives. Thought-provoking debates and lectures encourage critical analysis of the forces that have shaped America. First-person narratives, photos, film footage, and documents reveal the human side of American history — how historical figures affected events, and the impact of these events on citizens' lives.

History 389 Syllabus and Schedule of Readings Course Overview : From bootleggers and baseball players to fundamentalists and flappers, the 1920s had it all. 1920 was the first decade in American history when more people lived in urban centers than rural areas. As a result, historians have pointed to the 1920s as the first truly modern decade in American history.
The Roaring Twenties did possess many of the features of modern American society. The decade saw the emergence of radio, films, cars, the family-comic strip in daily newspapers, a fascination with sports heroes and movie stars, and the rise of a national culture based on consumerism. Many of these features should be recognizable and familiar to Americans at the end of the twentieth century. But the 1920s was also a decade where traditionalists worried about the impact of these and other new facets of American life on the moral and cultural fabric of the nation.

  • America turned away from the ideals of progressivism. Even the prohibition amendment was not always strictly enforced. Republicans regained the presidency and ushered in a new era of pro-business policies. Government policies, progress in technology, and a new consumer society produced a booming economy. Radio helped transform the U.S. into a single national market, and a mass popular culture developed based largely on the consumption of luxury items. To take full advantage of the profits to be made, businesses merged and grew ever larger.

American History Study Guide Overview "The Roaring Twenties." The 1920s have been dubbed everything from "The Roaring Twenties" and "The Era of Wonderful Nonsense" to "The Decade of the Dollar" and "The Period of the Psyche" to the "Dry Decade" and the age of "Alcohol and Al Capone." Many historians regard the years between World War I and the stock-market crash of 1929 as the culmination of a long process of social change, which Frederick Lewis Allen described as a "revolution in manners and morals." The Wake of World War I. The 1920s opened in the aftermath of World War I. The war's brutality and devastation in Europe culminated in euphoria at home over the armistice, followed by political controversy over the Treaty of Versailles. While President Woodrow Wilson helped end the war "over there," he claimed Americans did not "want to be coached and led" and as a result offered no organized plan to convert the economy from military mobilization to peace or to incorporate masses of returning veterans into society. Long since forgotten Electric Park in Kansas City, Missouri. The twenties were an amazing time of change in the United States. The country came out of one of the most repressive eras in its history under Woodrow Wilson and people wanted to indulge them. Flappers danced to rambunctious jazz music, radio and film were becoming an integral part of American life and the Ziegfield Follies was a hit with young star Wil Rodgers. Another symbol of the new freethinking decade was the abundance of roller coasters. Estimates state that between 1,500 and 2,000 coasters existed during this time period, an astounding figure even by today's standards.
The Shoot-the-Chutes ride at White City Amusement Park in Chicago. Many attribute the spread of the amusement park across the United States to Frederick Ingersoll and his family. Three years later he opened Luna Park in Pittsburgh. It was the first amusement park to use one of the names made famous by Coney Island. As Robert Cartmell said, "He followed Thompson and Dundy's format with a central Shoot-the-Chutes surrounded by rides, acts, and concessionaires." Ingersoll opened a Luna Park in Cleveland later that year and used the same park formula. Within a decade there were Luna Parks, White Cities and

      1. Success of Russian Revolution combined with epidemic of strikes frightened Americans into "Red Scare" mentality of 1919-1920 2. Attorney General A. Mitchell Palmer arrested 6000 suspected radicals and deported many following several bombings
    C. Fear of foreigners
      1. Over 800,000 immigrants came to America in 1920-21, with 2/3 coming from southern and eastern Europe 2. To preserve the northern European racial composition of America, quotas were set up to restrict new immigration in a series of acts, including the National Origins Act of 1924 which cut immigration to 2% of each nationality from the 1890 census. 3. Sacco and Vanzetti, two Italian anarchists, were executed in 1927 for murder despite protests from within and outside the U.S. that anti-immigrant attitudes prejudiced their trial.

GALLERY THREE: The Roaring Twenties Linked pictures are available for purchase. This gallery depicts some of the enormous changes that took place in sports, literature, technology, communications, and other areas of American life during the 1920s.
A Decade of Change
The Twenties were the cradle of modern America, beginning with the 1920 census, the first ever to report a majority of Americans living in urban areas. Daylight Savings Time was a spinoff of the war. So were jazz, Wall Street speculation and women's suffrage.
An explosion of new inventions and technological breakthroughs transformed popular lifestyles. Rayon stockings eliminated artificial distinctions between shopgirls and ladies of leisure. Shorter work weeks and increased wages led to a revolution in communications, transportation and recreation. Radio tied the nation together, and Hollywood gave it a common culture by cranking out 2,000 films a year. Charlie Chaplin and Babe Ruth became as famous as Henry Ford and Charles Lindbergh. Even the universe itself was being redefined, thanks to the pioneering work of scientists like Albert Einstein. As Secretary of Commerce, Herbert Hoover rejoiced in the scientific and technological ingenuity of the age. "There are continents of human welfare of which we have only penetrated the coastal plane," he enthused.
