also called the jazz age, the period after World War I from 1921 to 1929. It was a time of isolationism , escapism, and some social reform. Prohibition prompted a wave of lawbreaking when many Americans made liquor at home, gangsters bootlegged liquor, and organized crime escalated. The 1920s was an era of apparent business prosperity under Presidents Warren G. Harding, Calvin Coolidge, and Herbert Hoover, although political corruption caused embarrassment during the Harding administration. Many Americans enjoyed what seemed to be a rising standard of living, evidenced by enormous overspeculation in the stock market and excessive amounts of easy credit. The 1920s were the time of the flapper and of a flourishing entertainment industry, with crowds flocking to theaters and sports stadiums. Critical agricultural, industrial, and financial problems, however, led to the stock market crash of 1929 and the Great Depression , thus ending the prosperity and recklessness of the Roaring Twenties.

They were too busy enjoying the prosperity of the 1920s. American industry had expanded during the Great War, making weapons, uniforms, equipment etc. This expansion continued after the war, helped by America's massive reserves of raw materials and by high tariffs (import duties on foreign goods).Tariffs made foreign goods dearer, so American goods were bought. Some industries were also given subsidies (cash support), which increased their profits. So there was a boom(economic expansion).
Things to ask yourself: Why was America prosperous in the 1920's?

The 1920s era went by such names as the Jazz Age, the Age of Intolerance, and the Age of Wonderful Nonsense. Under any moniker, the era embodied the beginning of modern America. Numerous Americans felt buoyed up following World War I (1914-1918). America had survived a deadly worldwide influenza epidemic (1918). The new decade would be a time of change for everyone — not all of it good. The presidential administrations The close of World War I saw the United States recede into an inward-looking stance. In spite of President Woodrow Wilson 's unflagging efforts, the Senate refused to ratify the Versailles Peace Treaty that ended World War I, and the U.S. failed to join the League of Nations . Early in the 1920s the U.S. raised tariffs on imported goods, and free immigration came to an end. Elected president in Warren G. Harding promoted a "return to normalcy," which signaled a resurgence of nativism, isolationism , and rejection of the progressive era 's governmental activism. Overall, Harding's policies reflected a conservative
