Rhyme
This article is about the poetic technique. For the form of ice, see rime ice . For linguistic rime (or rhyme) see syllable rime
A rhyme is a repetition of identical or similar sounds in two or more different words and is most often used in poetry . The term usually refers to the repetition of sounds at the end of rhymed words: in the following poem by A.E. Housman , the words or syllables in bold are rhymes:
Loveliest of trees, the cherry now Is hung with bloom along the bough And stands about the woodland ride Wearing white for Easter tide
"Rhyme" may also refer to a complete rhyming couplet or short poem that uses verses (see nursery rhyme ). As "sight rhyme", it refers to words which are identical only in their written forms: for example "love" and move". Etymology
The word comes from the Old French rime , ultimately from the Greek from which "rhythm" also derives. In English, the spelling "rhyme" came to be adopted at the beginning of the Modern English period in order to reflect the Greek original, in the same way that a b was added to the words " dette " and " doute " to reflect the original Latin debitum and dubitum The spelling "rime" survives in English however, as a rare alternative spelling. A distinction between the spellings is also sometimes made in the study of

Comhardadh: how to rhyme in Irish
I hate to tell you this, but to learn how the medieval Irish rhymed their poems, you first have to find out how they looked at the sounds of their language. I know this looks really scary and complicated,
but bear in mind just how complicated that, say, a rap song would look, if outlined in terms of meter and phonetics! The poet and the audience would have had the patterns engrained in them; it's only to the outsider or the describer that these patterns seems detailed, difficult and strange. In medieval Irish linguistic and poetic tracts, the sounds of Old and Middle Irish are carefully divided into two kinds of classifications. The first was broadness/slenderness.
Broad vowels Slender vowels Broad consonants Slender consonants Consonants immediately preceded by broad vowels. Consonants immediately preceded by slender vowels. The second classification was similar to the description of consonants that linguists use today.
The letters in parentheses are the spellings used for the same sound when it's not the first sound in a word.
    'the 3 hard consonants' = voiced stops b, d, g (p, t, c)

Word Families in Nursery Rhymes Word families
are groups of words that have a common feature or pattern - they have some of the same combinations of letters in them and a similar sound. For example, at, cat, hat, and fat are a family of words with the "at" sound and letter combination in common. The 37 most common word families in English (according to Wylie and Durrell ) are: ack, ain, ake, ale, all, ame, an, ank, ap, ash, at, ate, aw ay, eat, ell, est, ice, ick, ide, ight, ill, in, ine, ing, ink, ip, it, ock, oke, op, ore, ot, uck ,ug, ump, unk. Many of the nursery rhymes contain common word families. You can use these rhymes to teach these letter combinations (and how they are spelled and spoken), having the students sound them out after memorizing the rhyme. You can study one word family a week. Students can use the Little Explorers Picture Dictionary to look for more words that belong to word families.
