The program's main features
  • Over 16 learning activities Skills taught range from vowel sounds to consonant blends Practise a single rule or any combination Simple to setup and use Easily track the progress of pupils
The program in detail
Starting with single sounds and culminating in the identification of rhyming words, a progression of tasks aims to develop recognition of short vowels and automatic response to sounds within words. The Sounds task concentrates on the standard five vowel sounds, presenting several practice formats varied between the pupil listening to the initial sound of a word and matching it to a vowel or grouping simple three letter words by their middle letter. The Rhymes task covers many topics - initial and final consonant, word endings, rhyming words, matching words, odd word out and others. Each of the tasks can be practiced with or without the aid of textual clues, making the task purely auditory if required.

Writing a poem is a wonderful family (or class) activity.
Get the kids and let's write some some silly rhymes! Thank you for the great rhymes you made with the -oons and -eez.
This time I will give you the -oons again and add the -ay ending sounds.
Rhyming is not hard!
Remember, all you need is:
  • A thought or idea
  • Some good rhyming words to use at the end of the lines
  • To use your imagination
In this session we will give you a starting point and then turn you loose. The -oons were your favorites (mine, too) and to show you this is definitely an exercise for the whole family I will share an -oon about a tune played on a bassoon in Rangoon. This masterpiece was done by Jean Jerome, a grandmother in Belle Vista, Arkansas. One very warm night
On a farm in Rangoon,
A boy played a tune
On his father's bassoon. The noise woke 3 cats,
13 dogs and a coon,
4 horses, a cow,
15 ducks and a loon. And the ruckus they made
When they all howled in tune,
Lasted all the night long Till the next afternoon!

Here we go with a new rhyming fun session. Let's keep one thing in perspective: you won't find great poetry here. This web page is done to have fun with language and rhyming is just that! A few of you may become excellent poets but all of you can have fun your whole lives with rhyming.
Rhyming is easy!
Remember, you need an idea (have a thought once in a while, OK?) and you need some good rhyming words. Sitting in the dentist office always brings on a few ideas. Rhyming is the only way I've found to have fun waiting for my turn in the chair. You can find a lot of nice rhymes for drill. (Don't forget bill.) In the first two lessons you have found how easy it is to write a rhyming poem. This lesson is to make it even easier!
You don't have to rhyme every line!
No. Rhyming only two lines is not cheating. You will find that the majority of poems written for children will use this rhyme scheme. Let's try a silly summer poem. The sun came out and so did we,
It was me and my two sisters.

Building Reading Readiness with Nursery Rhymes
Young children and pre-readers need to build lots of skills in order to prepare for reading instruction. Teachers, parents and care givers are charged with a big job: we must make sure these youngsters are ready to learn when they begin school. Children who have had experiences that build readiness skills have a huge advantage over those who have not.
One important area of reading readiness is called phonemic awareness. This group of skills will eventually help students understand ideas like rhyming, similar beginning and ending sounds, syllables, and the sounds that each letter makes. For young children, phonemic awareness can be developed through lots of language play and oral work. Hearing the sounds of the language over and over again, in many, many different forms and ways, will help them both to make generalizations about sounds and to learn the specifics required to build reading skill. There are several subskills in this area of learning, too.
Solid phonemic awareness skills can be broken down into several categories:
  • Phoneme segmentation allows children to hear the separate syllables and sounds within words. This skill will let them notice the different parts of compound words, count the syllables within words, and pick words apart into their component sounds to understand that /bear/ begins with a /b/ sound and ends with an /r/ sound.

    Q. My six-year-old is having problems with rhyming words and sight words. His teacher thinks that another year of kindergarten will help. My husband and I don't want to hold our son back. Can you suggest any activities that may help him? A. Talk with your son's teacher or with the technology specialist at his school about appropriate software to help him with those skills. Make sure that your son has regular opportunities (daily, or perhaps on alternate days) to work with the software. This consistent work over the summer will encourage development of his reading skills while making sure that he doesn't lose all that he learned this year. Check with a book store or a teachers' supply store for workbooks that your son can use as well. Again, making sure that he has regular times to work on this will help tremendously. Most importantly, read for 15 minutes with your son every day this summer. Ask the librarian at your public library for help in choosing interesting books at your son's reading level. Many children's books use rhyming words in the text, and his sight-word recognition will improve with practice. If your son does go on to the next grade, be sure to monitor his progress next year. If he continues to have trouble with his reading, request that he be screened for a possible learning difference.

    How to Write a Limerick
    by Bruce Lansky
To begin, a limerick is a funny little poem containing five lines. It has a very distinctive rhythm and rhyme pattern.
    • Rhyme Pattern: Rhythm Pattern:
Here is a very famous limerick. Notice both the rhyme and rhythm patterns. There was an old man from Peru, (A)
da DUM da da DUM da da DUM (3 DUMS) who dreamed he was eating his shoe. (A)
da DUM da da DUM da da DUM (3 DUMS) He awoke in the night (B)
da DUM da da DUM (2 DUMS) with a terrible fright, (B)
da da DUM da da DUM (2 DUMS) and found out that it was quite true. (A)
da DUM da da DUM da da DUM (3 DUMS) Ideas for new limericks can come from almost anywhere. For example, your city, state, country, or name. If your name is Tim or Jim, you could write something like this: A Clumsy Young Fellow Named Tim
  • There once was a fellow named Tim (A) whose dad never taught him to swim. (A) He fell off a dock (B) and sunk like a rock. (B) And that was the end of him. (A)

  • (Notice that the last words in the first two lines rhyme and that both the first and second lines contain 3 DUMS or beats.)
There once was a young girl named Jill.
