Spring gardens rely on rhododendrons for flowers, but also for the strength and beauty of the leaves for eleven more months. Now's the time to check new growth of all rhododendrons for disease symptoms. For about 10 years gardeners have been noticing odd brownish splotches under the leaves of many different rhododendrons. One of the puzzling aspects of this fungal problem is the fact that two different affected rhododendrons vary in appearance. 'Unique,' for instance, shows almost no upper leaf changes, other than occasional very faint lighter yellowish areas, while the underside of the leaves will be completely covered in brown spots. It's possible to walk past a 'Unique' with powdery mildew and not notice any symptoms until the leaf is turned over. A deep green leaf may begin to show lighter green patches, and these areas will gradually become more yellow. One cultivar, 'Virginia Richards,' gets brownish purple spots on both tops and bottoms of leaves.

Taranaki Rhododendron and Garden Festival 2004
October 29 - November 7
GROWING FESTIVAL OFFERS NEW BLEND OF GARDENS AND EVENTS RADIANT rhododendrons and gorgeous gardens always feature in the long-running Taranaki Rhododendron and Garden Festival - this year a celebrity chef, celebrity speakers and celebrity gardeners are being added to the mix. The annual festival, starting on October 29, boasts a sparkling events calendar as well as showcasing 64 of the region's top gardens. A stellar panel will argue the pros and cons of Nature vs. Nurture while food writer Annabel Langbein creates culinary delights in a Garden and Gourmet evening. An inaugural writer for Cuisine magazine, Annabel is the author and publisher of 10 cookbooks and recipient of international awards and accolades. Her latest title 'Cooking to Impress - without stress' was a finalist in this year's Montana NZ Book Awards. Lynda Hallinan and Richard Greenwood of TVNZ's gardening series Ground Rules give lectures in festival gardens, while 'Bugman' Ruud Kleinpaste, famous for his appearances on Maggie's Garden Show, talks to school children. All three takes part in the celebrity debate along with comedian, writer and regular Radio New Zealand guest Jim Hopkins.

The Peaceful Woodland Garden Meerkerk Gardens Spring Plant Sale A grand selection of rhododendrons and companion plants are available this weekend in the Meerkerk nursery. Celebrate the arrival of spring with a walk through the early blooming gardens, featuring drifts of daffodils, magnificent magnolias and cherry trees accompanying hundreds of rhododendrons for this spring symphony of color. (There is no admission fee these two days, however donations are gratefully accepted.)
Meerkerk Rhododendron Gardens was founded by Ann and Max Meerkerk in the early 1960's. Enchanted by Whidbey Island, they began these Gardens with 13 acres. The Rothschild's Exbury Gardens in England, Max's life in Asia and our native Rhododendron macrophyllum, influenced the Meerkerk's. Ann was active with the WA Park Arboretum and the American Rhododendron Society. Together, they visualized creating a Pacific Northwest style woodland garden enveloped by a forest preserve. Over the years, the Meerkerk's purchased an additional 40 acres to achieve this goal. The Meerkerk's began hybridizing rhododendrons and collecting unique specimens of rhododendrons, flowering trees and conifers. They planted the first five acres, known as the "Secret Garden" as a miniature arboretum.

The wonderful blooms last through all of March until the end of the first week of April, but just before the middle of April, the blooms tumble neatly down like autumn leaves. This self-cleaning habit can be forstalled by a heavy rain, which mats the flowers to the leaves so the shrub has to be cleaned of faded blooms, but most years it takes care of itself. The tidiness of the bloom-fall is another plus for this plant, as some of the rhodies need to have the dead blossoms physically removed or the shrub looks just awful with brown shriveled flowers. The resulting carpet of fallen flower petals (prettily covering the ground between spreading clumps of Alpine Snowbells ) is quite a lovely ending for PJM Elite's blooming period.

These are not plants for the U.S. Great Plains states, or parts of the Midwest, because they absolutely require acid soil and they are generally hardy only to about USDA zone 5. Some have been developed for colder areas, but I have to tell you that nothing looks sadder than a Rhododendron leaf in cold weather. They droop and roll up like cigars; not at all attractive! So, if you live where winters get really cold, don’t plant them by the front door. They actually grow best in the US in the North West coast states where temperatures are cool and there is a lot of moisture; conditions very like those in which they originated. Some, like the Vireyas, are only suitable for warm climates. Many do quite well in the U.S. Eastern and Southern states, as well as southern California. They also flourish in the United Kingdom, where overplanting in the past has created somewhat of a glut in certain areas, from what I’ve read.

The Evergreen State's Official "Coast Rhododendron"
by Naomi Mathews More than a hundred years ago, the Washington State Senate confirmed that the "Coast Rhododendron" (Rhododendron macrophyllum) would be the new floral emblem for Washington state. One of my required courses prior to graduation from high school included Washington State History. However, my mental recollection fails me about whether we learned much, if anything, about Washington state's flowers. Having lived in the beautiful state of Washington most of my life, I decided to do some research about how, when, and why this gorgeous rhododendron was chosen for this honor. I invite you to accompany me on a journey back in time to the year 1892, before women even had the right to vote. Delegates from each state had been invited to attend the 1893 World's Fair which was to be held in Chicago. It was suggested that each state decorate their booths with their official flower, if they had one. Since Washington had not yet selected an official flower, voting booths were set up throughout the state. (I found it very interesting that this election was open to women only, since they were not allowed to vote in other elections.) Some flowers that were suggested included the dogwood, syringa

Updated: 3 July 2005 Rhododendron
The Rhododendron and Hosta Garden, initially planted in 1985, was extensively renovated from 1995 to 2000 under the direction of Dr. Ted Irving with the help of a dedicated group of volunteers. Financial support from the Victoria Rhododendron Society, and donations in memory of Frances (the notable hosta hybridizer) and Constance Williams were invaluable. The soil was amended, drainage improved, duplicate plants sold and many new ones added. All but one garden area has been completed. Development of this area began in 2002 with addition of new rhododendrons and hostas that are generally not represented elsewhere in the garden.
The primary purpose of the garden is to demonstrate the range and beauty of rhododendrons and hostas for the gardening public. Plants in the garden are generally commercially available. Specimens of rhododendrons range from large, tree-like varieties (suitable for woodland gardens) to small forms suitable for urban and rock gardens. The hostas that have been planted display the wide variety of leaf form and colour available; some are fragrant. Blooming of rhododendrons peaks in April and May but extends from February to July. Hostas are at their best in mid-summer and fall for bloom and foliage. Many companion plants provide year-round colour and interest: primulas, ferns, lilies, hardy and other geraniums, hydrangeas, hebes, hellebores, cyclamens, astilbes, epimediums, small ornamental trees and shrubs, like old fashioned roses, and others.
