The Story of Southern Rhodesia
The Story of Southern Rhodesia - Four chapters about British colonization of Rhodesia from E. D. Morel's history of European imperialism in Africa, The Black Man's Burden. Turn your popup blocker on. This site has good content but lousy advertising techniques!
From the site:
The portion of the Continent south of the Zambesi is with some exceptions suitable for settlement by white races, so far as the climate is concerned. The exceptions are the vicinity of the Zambesi itself, the desert and waterless coast regions of Damaraland, and a fairly wide belt of Portuguese territory on the East Coast. The whites are, however, incapable, save in a very limited degree, of performing the more arduous forms of manual labour. The actual development of the country, both agricultural and mineral must depend, therefore, either upon African labour or upon imported Asiatic labour to which the whites are opposed for various reasons, which need not here be discussed.

    History
[edit this] [Upload image] The indigenous hunter-gatherer occupants of Zambia began to be displaced or absorbed by more advanced migrating tribes about 2 000 years ago. The major waves of Bantu-speaking immigrants began in the 15th century with the greatest influx between the late 17th and early 19th centuries. They came primarily from the Luba and Lunda tribes of southern Zaire and northern Angola but were joined in the 19th century by Ngoni peoples from the south. By the latter part of that century the various peoples of Zambia were largely established in the areas they currently occupy. Except for an occasional Portuguese explorer the area lay untouched by Europeans for centuries. After the mid-19th century it was penetrated by Western explorers missionaries and traders. David Livingstone in 1855 was the first European to see the magnificent falls on the Zambezi River. He named the falls after Queen Victoria and the Zambian town near the falls is named after him. In 1888 Cecil Rhodes spearheading British commercial and political interests in Central Africa obtained a mineral rights concession from local chiefs. In the same year Northern and Southern Rhodesia (now Zambia and Zimbabwe respectively) were proclaimed a British sphere of influence. Southern Rhodesia was annexed formally and granted self-government in 1923 and the administration of Northern Rhodesia was transferred to the British colonial office in 1924 as a protectorate.

Since the twelfth century present-day Zimbabwe is under control of Mashonaland . This powerful state becomes a Portuguese vasal in 1628, but their position is taken over by the Barotse. In 1827 the Matabele tribe conquers Mashonaland and founds the state of Matabeleland . In 1888, Cecil Rhodes obtained a concession for mineral rights from local chiefs. Later that year, the area that became Southern and Northern Rhodesia was proclaimed a British sphere of influence. The British South Africa Company was chartered in 1889 and the settlement of Salisbury (now Harare, the capital) is established in 1890. In 1895 the territory was formally named Rhodesia after Cecil Rhodes under the British South Africa Company's administration. Between 1890 and 1989 Britain seizes control over Matabeleland and Mashonaland and in 1898 they are united as Southern Rhodesia Southern Rhodesia's white settlements are given the choice of being incorporated into the Union of South Africa or becoming a separate entity within the British Empire. The settlers reject incorporation. Southern Rhodesia becomes in 1923 a British colony in 1923 with self-government for the whites, with its own legislature, civil service, armed forces and police. The first premier is since 1923 Charles Patrick John Goghlan of the Rhodesian Reform Party (RP). He is succeeded in 1927 by Howard Unwin Moffat. After some interim prime ministers Godfrey Martin Huggins becomes prime minister for the RP and since 1934 for the United Rhodesian Party (URP). He governs until 1953, the moment he leaves the URP and joins the Federal Party. He becomes prime minister of the Federation of

In the 18th century Portuguese colonists enter present-day Zambia. The British South African Companay establishes in the area in 1895 North-Eastern Rhodesia and in 1900 North-Western Rhodesia. These territories and Barotseland are united in 1911 under administration by the British South Africa Company as Northern Rhodesia . Northern Rhodesia becomes in 1924 a British protectorate and is between 1953 and 1963 part of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland The 1962 elections result in an African majority in the legislative council and an uneasy coalition between the two African nationalist parties. The new parliament decides a seccesion of the federation and Northern Rhodesia becomes independent in 1964 as the Republic of Zambia . Before independence Kenneth David Kaunda, leader of the Zambia African National Congress, becomes prime minister and after independence he is the first president. The ZANC is renamed United National Independence Party and in 1972 Kaunda forbids opposition parties and establishes a one-party state in 1972. The new constitution and the national elections that followed in 1973 are the final steps in achieving the "one-party participatory democracy."
