Other descriptions of History of Zambia The indigenous hunter-gatherer occupants of Zambia began to be displaced or absorbed by more advanced migrating tribes about 2,000 years ago. The major waves of Bantu -speaking immigrants began in the 15th century, with the greatest influx between the late 17th and early 19th centuries. They came primarily from the Luba and Lunda tribes of southern Zaire and northern Angola but were joined in the 19th century by Nguni peoples from the south. By the latter part of that century, the various peoples of Zambia were largely established in the areas they currently occupy. Except for an occasional Portuguese explorer, the area lay untouched by Europeans for centuries. After the mid-19th century, it was penetrated by Western explorers, missionaries, and traders.

It is the first book of cartoons to come out of Rhodesia and very good it is, too! . . . our friend, Ian Smith, and his British opponent, Harold Wilson, feature prominently among the witty drawings dealing with Rhodesia's independence and her attitude to sanctions, majority rule, petrol-rationing, tobacco production, and the rest . . ." - Natal Mercury

Archaeologists have found Stone-Age implements and pebble tools in several areas of Zimbabwe, a suggestion of human habitation for many centuries, and the ruins of stone buildings provide evidence of early civilization. The most impressive of these sites is the "Great Zimbabwe" ruins, after which the country is named, located near Masvingo. Evidence suggests that these stone structures were built between the 9th and 13th centuries A.D. by indigenous Africans who had established trading contacts with commercial centers on Africa's southeastern coast. In the 16th century, the Portuguese were the first Europeans to attempt colonization of south-central Africa, but the hinterland lay virtually untouched by Europeans until the arrival of explorers, missionaries, ivory hunters, and traders some 300 years later. Meanwhile, mass migrations of indigenous peoples took place. Successive waves of more highly developed Bantu peoples from equatorial regions supplanted the original inhabitants and are the ancestors of the region's Africans today. British Settlement and Administration In 1888, Cecil Rhodes obtained a concession for mineral rights from local chiefs. Later that year, the area that became Southern and Northern Rhodesia was proclaimed a British sphere of influence. The British South Africa Company was chartered in 1889, and the settlement of Salisbury (now Harare, the capital) was established in 1890. In 1895, the territory was formally named Rhodesia after Cecil Rhodes under the British South Africa Company's administration.

The indigenous hunter-gatherer occupants of Zambia began to be displaced or absorbed by more advanced migrating tribes about 2,000 years ago. The major waves of Bantu-speaking immigrants began in the 15th century, with the greatest influx between the late 17th and early 19th centuries. They came primarily from the Luba and Lunda tribes of southern Democratic Republic of Congo and northern Angola but were joined in the 19th century by Ngoni peoples from the south. By the latter part of that century, the various peoples of Zambia were largely established in the areas they currently occupy. Except for an occasional Portuguese explorer, the area lay untouched by Europeans for centuries. After the mid-19th century, it was penetrated by Western explorers, missionaries, and traders. David Livingstone, in 1855, was the first European to see the magnificent waterfalls on the Zambezi River. He named the falls after Queen Victoria, and the Zambian town near the falls is named after him. In 1888, Cecil Rhodes, spearheading British commercial and political interests in Central Africa, obtained a mineral rights concession from local chiefs. In the same year, Northern and Southern Rhodesia (now Zambia and Zimbabwe, respectively) were proclaimed a British sphere of influence. Southern Rhodesia was annexed formally and granted self-government in 1923, and the administration of Northern Rhodesia was transferred to the British colonial office in 1924 as a protectorate.

The Northern Rhodesia Regiment Northern Rhodesia (which in 1964 achieved independence from the United Kingdom as Zambia) between 1932 and 1933 separated its civil and military police, the latter in April 1933 becoming (unlike neighboring East African forces which became battalions of the Kings African Rifles) the Northern Rhodesia Regiment. By August 1938 the strength of the Regiment stood at 20 Europeans (of whom the officers were mostly seconded from the British Army) and 401 African troops. That same year the first European Reserve was formed to begin military training for white settlers, and in August of the following year the new African Reserve began accepting volunteers. It was also in August 1939 that European reservists were mobilized and the existing strength of the Regiment became officially "1st Battalion The Northern Rhodesia Regiment". From such humble beginnings, and a total white population of less than 20,000, came the force that Northern Rhodesia considered "...one of the greatest efforts of any British Colony during the 1939-1945 campaign."

Some Bantu-speaking peoples (probably including the ancestors of the Tonga) reached the region by c. A.D. 800, but the ancestors of most of modern Zambia's ethnic groups arrived from present-day Angola and Congo (Kinshasa) between the 16th and 18th cent. By the late 18th cent. traders (including Arabs, Swahili, and other Africans) had penetrated the region from both the Atlantic and Indian Ocean coasts; they exported copper, wax, and slaves. In 1835 the Ngoni, a warlike group from S Africa, entered E Zambia. Rhodesia the Beautiful Return to top Recent news may make some people think that our homeland is not a good place to visit. True, while Mugabe remains in power, a visit might not be advisable, but please don't forget that nature has been kind to us and so our country remains a beautiful place. The scenery is still outstanding, the wildlife still wonderful, and if ever the economy returns to normalcy, it would still be a great holiday destination. Amongst it's many scenic attractions are:
    • The Victoria Falls
      The Great Zimbabwe

Rhodesia's modern name is derived from this sprawling archipelago of carefully hewn stone, seen by many as conclusive evidence of a sophisticated African civilisation which reached its apex long before the arrival of the white man. Modern dating techniques suggest that the city dates back to around AD 1200, and thrived for three or four centuries before being abandoned. It was within this strange site that the 'Zimbabwe Bird' was first discovered, carved from stone and shown on every one of the nation's flags from the end of the colonial period.

      Early History to British Control
There are a number of Iron Age sites in Zimbabwe, with artifacts dating from c. A.D. 180. These early cultures were supplanted by Bantu-speaking peoples, who migrated into the area after the 5th cent. The ruins at Zimbabwe date from the 12th to the 15th cent. In the early 16th cent., the Portuguese made contact with Shona-dominated states and developed a trade in gold and other items. During the 1830s, the Shona-speaking people were subjected to Ndebele invaders, who forced them to pay tribute. British and Boer traders and hunters moved into the area, and the London Missionary Society established a mission to the Ndebele in 1861. In 1889 the British South Africa Company, organized by Cecil Rhodes , obtained a charter to promote commerce and colonization in the region. Leander Starr

Originally founded in 1963, at the same time as Air Malawi and Zambia Airways, Air Rhodesia started operations with two Dakotas, used solely for internal services from Salisbury to Kariba, Victoria Falls, , Gwelo and Fort Victoria. The Central African Airways (CAA) Viscounts operated all Regional Services, while BOAC operated the International Service to London on behalf of CAA (known as the Zambesi Service). In 1965 Southern Rhodesia declared its Unilateral Declaration of Independence (UDI) and in 1966 the UN applied mandatory sanctions aimed at causing the collapse of the 'illegal regime'. This prevented CAA taking delivery of the two BAC 1-11 series 207 aircraft which it had on order, and set the stage for Air Rhodesia to become a major Viscount operator over the next few years. Viscount 784D VP-YNA in 1960s livery In 1968 CAA was wound up as an operating airline and the fleet of 5 Viscounts were divided between Air Rhodesia (3 aircraft) and Air Malawi (2 aircraft). Three Viscounts proved insufficient, and two Viscount 782s were obtained from Iraqi Airlines followed by 2 Viscount 754s from Middle East Airlines.

The information given in this article is on the basic armament of the Pioneer Column which occupied Mashonaland in 1890. It was supplied by the National Archives of Rhodesia and is reproduced here, by kind permission, from the journal of the Historical Firearms Society of South Africa. ARTILLERY: Two 7-pounder muzzle loading 200 lb. pieces, with trail and limber. These were purchased from the Cape Mounted Riflemen by the B.S.A. Company in 1890 and had previously been used by Sir Charles Warren's force in Bechuanaland. The guns were also used in the Matabele War of 1893 and in the Rebellion of 1896. One is believed to have formed part of the defence of Bulawayo in 1896 and the other was used in operations against the Portuguese in the Manica area in 1891. During the South African War 7-pounders were mounted on armoured trains to partol the railway lines. The Column which entered Matabeleland in 1893 had a 7-pounder and a longer barrelled version of the same weapon known as the "screw gun." The 10th Mountain Battery, Royal Artillery, took part in the Matabeleland Campaign and had a number of 7-pounder "screw guns" of which at least two were left behind when the unit left the country. These continued in use throughout the South African War. MACHINE GUNS: The Pioneer Column was armed with four, of which two were Maxims, one a Nordenfelt, and one a Gatling. The columns which entered Bulawayo each had a machine gun and the Gardner machine gun of the Salisbury Column was decisive in the first battle of Bembesi in 1893. The use of these weapons was restricted to defensive emplacements in the 1896 campaigns. Pitched battles were no longer the order of the day and once the fighting had moved into the hills the machine gun's effectiveness was curbed.
