Rhodesia: Unilateral Declaration of Independence Documents, 1965

Prime Minister Ian Smith : Announcement of Unilateral Declaration of Independence, November 11, 1965 Now I would like to say a few words to you. Today, now that the final stalemate in negotiations has become evident, the end of the road has been reached. It has become abundantly clear that it is the policy of the British Government to play us along with no real intention of arriving at a solution which we could possibly accept. Indeed, in the latest verbal and confidential message delivered to me last night we find that on the main principle which is in dispute the two Governments have moved further apart. I promised the people of this country that I would continue to negotiate to the bitter end and that I would leave no stone unturned in my endeavours to secure an honourable and mutually accepted settlement.

The Black Man's Burden: The White Man in Africa to World War I
Chapter 4
The Story of Southern Rhodesia
T he portion of the Continent south of the Zambesi is with some exceptions suitable for settlement by white races, so far as the climate is concerned. The exceptions are the vicinity of the Zambesi itself, the desert and waterless coast regions of Damaraland, and a fairly wide belt of Portuguese territory on the East Coast. The whites are, however, incapable, save in a very limited degree, of performing the more arduous forms of manual labour. The actual development of the country, both agricultural and mineral must depend, therefore, either upon African labour or upon imported Asiatic labour to which the whites are opposed for various reasons, which need not here be discussed. For a century the healthy tablelands and plateaux of this region have been the scene of the kind of racial conflict which occurs when an invading race, of a higher culture than the aboriginal population and possessed of superior offensive and defensive weapons, disputes with the latter for the occupation of the land. Natural man presently finds himself threatened in his liberties. Civilised man is filled with the terror which comes from the knowledge of overwhelming odds. Mutual fears inspire reciprocal cruelties. "The Kaffirs had ample justification of the war into which they rushed with such fatal imprudence ... urged to revenge and desperation by the systematic injustice of which they had been the victims ... the original justice is on the side of the conquered, not of the victorious party."

Rhodesia - the building of a nation from the wilderness From the wilderness which existed at the time of Cecil John Rhodes arrival, a vibrant new nation called Rhodesia was created. In less than 75 years this nation, created from nothing by toil and enterprise, became the jewel of Africa, the most progressive and socially evolutionary country on the African continent, until its tragic metamorphosis into the Republic of Zimbabwe in 1980.

NAVIGATION RHODESIA ZIMBABWE ICELAND Rhodesian Wine Industry It appears to be a matter of some dispute, as to exactly when and where the commercial wine industry in Rhodesia had its beginnings. There are many opinions on this question, but a place to begin this piece has to be found, and at the risk of causing much disagreement amongst Rhodesians, that place shall be Essexvale, situated in Matabeleland between the city of Bulawayo and Balla Balla. This first commercial production began in the early 1950's under the labels of Worringham and Lorraine, these were semi-sweet and quite good. Rhodesians had been told by outside experts that wine production in the country was not a viable proposition, or even possible. However, this kind of thinking has no meaning to a Rhodesian and showing typical grit and determination, Rhodesians soon proved the experts wrong. In the beginning, much of the wine produced in Rhodesia was to say the least, not of the best quality, but was extremely useful for putting the shine back on old pennies or stripping that awkward enamel paint from a truck chassis! Mind you, this was also true of the first English wines to appear since the time of the Roman occupation, but they have also grown in stature and respect, much to the chagrin of the French and assorted pretentious wine snobs. Other areas in Rhodesia soon came on tap to produce wine, some of these being in the Eastern Highlands, Marandera and rumour has it, Umtali on the Mozambique border. Both red and white wines were produced, with the red wines seeming to be the most successful and the quickest to improve in quality.

History of Zimbabwe and its flags
The land was administered from 1890 by the British South Africa Company The first flag of sovereignty flown in what is now Zimbabwe was the British Union Flag (Union Jack) raised at Fort Salisbury on 13 September 1890, which marked the beginning of prolonged British influence in the region. Instrumental in bringing European pioneers to the area was the 19th century British imperialist and financier, Cecil John Rhodes, whose British South African Company (BSACo) was later given prospecting and mining rights by the Matabele king, Lobengula. The company's own flag had not been received from England when the Pioneer Column set out from South Africa, so a Union Jack was carried instead, the first company flag only arriving in Fort Salisbury in 1892.
The flag of the BSACo was raised in the Matabele capital of Bulawayo on 4 November 1893 after the Company's forces led by Major Patrick Forbes drove the native Ndebele from the town. The flag consisted of a Union Jack emblazoned with the BSACo badge in the centre.
