At present, certification programs are offered in the biological sciences, engineering, English, and history/ social studies. Forty-four states have certification reciprocity agreements with Rhode Island. The Undergraduate Teacher Education Program is not a concentration program. Whatever your concentration, you are eligible to be a UTEP as long as you can fulfill the course requirements for certification in your teaching field (biology, engineering, English, history/social studies,) and complete the required education courses (see list below). All required education courses must be taken at Brown University. If you are interested in the Undergraduate Teacher Education Program, you should talk to a member of the program faculty as early as possible.

    Two R.I. teachers nationally certified
December 27, 2001 By Leon Lagerstam, Dispatch/Argus Staff writer Two teachers who earned national teaching certificates this month work in Rock Island-Milan schools that are on an academic warning list. Superintendent David Markward said their achievement may not have any bearing on getting the schools off the list, ``but it's certainly representative of the people we have working on the problem.'' One of the teachers, Sylvia Elliott of Milan, who works at Lincoln Elementary School in Rock Island, said she hopes the certification dispels some people's idea that teachers in schools on the list aren't doing what they should. ``No one is dropping the ball,'' she said. Mrs. Elliott and Connie Snell of Cambridge, a teacher at Grant Intensive Basic Elementary School, were the only two teachers from the Illinois Quad-Cities area to be certified this month by the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards. Last year, Moline High School teacher Marguerite ``Maggie'' Woods was certified, the only other Rock Island County teacher who has earned the certification.

A Message From Catherine J. Fellows The field of dance education is about to take an exciting step forward in Connecticut's public schools. The Connecticut State Department of Education, working with members of the dance community, is developing guidelines for teacher certification in dance. Certification is literally a "license" to be a public school teacher within a state. Connecticut will join other states such as New York, Massachusetts and Rhode Island that have already instituted certification in dance. RETURN TO DANCE @ CCSU
