INDEPENDENT MAN Standing 11 feet tall and 278 feet above ground, the Independent Man is a gold-covered, bronze statue placed atop the State House on December 18, 1899. The Independent Man is a symbol of the independent spirit which led Roger Williams to settle here. The statue weighs more than 500 pounds and is covered with a thin gold covering called "gold leaf." The spear held by the Independent Man reaches to 14 feet. The statue was designed by sculpture George Brewster.
ROTUNDA The Rotunda is the round central open area of the State House, directly below the dome and on which is located the seal of the State of Rhode Island. Located one-half floor above the ground floor and one-half floor below the second floor, it is a central meeting place in the State House, with stairs leading to the chambers of the Senate and House of Representatives. In fact, some "invoices" are solicitations for listings in alternative business directories. What Causes the Confusion: Characteristics of a Phony Yellow Page Invoice: The solicitation from an alternative business directory may have the appearance of an invoice. The solicitation may lead you to believe that your business already has been listed in the telephone directory and that you are now being billed when, in fact, you are only being solicited for placing an ad. Rhode Island – A State Unit Study This mini unit on RHODE ISLAND uses the cross curricular approach to education. There are several activities from different academic subjects for you to choose from. One of the most important things is to have fun! Below are some activities to help you study RHODE ISLAND. You may choose to do all, some, or none of the activities. You can also alter the activities to better suit your individual child’s needs. Some of these activities overlap each other, choose the one you think that you and the children will enjoy most. The main point of this unit is to make learning about RHODE ISLAND and enjoyable for all who are participating. Rhode Island’s State Flag Placed on a white field is a circle of thirteen gold stars representing the first thirteen states. The stars surround a gold ship's anchor. The states motto " Hope" is on a blue ribbon below the anchor. Create a State “Infodesk”: Before you begin this unit you may want to set up a research area. Place a desk or table in front of a bulletin board area. This will be where you can place relevant books, magazines, photographs, posters, newspaper articles, maps, scrapbooks, games, puzzles, computer software, task cards, travel brochures, etc. that you collect. Print a blank map of the state, or draw one on tag board, that you can place on the bulletin board. As you study the political and physical features of the state, have the children fill in the name of the state capital, large cities, and major geographical features. Color the map using different shades for varying elevations.

CHAPTER V.
The Printer and The Press. The news-getting methods and facilities of the modern daily journal are so far removed from those of the early printer and publisher, that the contrast is amusing as well as startling; much of this change is due to the railroad and the telegraph. With all of these marvelous improvements the newspaper editor has taken on a new character. From the old-time citizen who issued the small weekly newspaper, with whom every townsman was acquainted and who met his neighbors every day to talk of public and private affairs, the modern editor of a great paper has grown to be an impersonal and almost intangible being who merely controls and actual pen-work of others. All of this would not, perhaps, possess paramount interest to the reader of these days or for rehearsal in these pages, were it not for the important fact that the dwellers in Rhode Island and Providence Plantations during the past century and a half have seen all of those momentous changes take place on their own soil; their own fellow citizens have contributed towards making them from their very inception. Newspaper establishments are still in existence wherein most of them have been developed. That should be sufficient.

The concentration in History, Philosophy + Social Sciences (HPSS) allows students with a special interest in the disciplines and critical methodologies offered by the department to pursue their study in a more in-depth and focused fashion. Students will initiate a concentration in consultation with any full-time faculty member of the HPSS department. One such member will serve as the primary concentration adviser for that student. To declare a concentration in HPSS, special forms must be completed. For more infomration contact HPSS concentration coordinator Don Keefer ( dkeefer@risd.edu ) or call 401 454 6263. To fulfill requirements for the concentration, students must complete a minimum of 8 courses prior to graduation. At least 6 of these courses must come from the HPSS department and fall within at least two of its three main areas (History or Philosophy or the Social Sciences). A maximum of 2 courses can be taken outside of HPSS or the Division of Liberal Arts with the approval of the primary adviser, provided such courses are consistent with the concentration track theme selected by the student (see below). One course must be a HPSS introductory class that deals with basic concepts, issues, approaches, theories, and analyses of a particular HPSS discipline.

USS Saratoga; Chinese in R.I.; Iron Lung
Episode 12
PART ONE: USS SARATOGA The ability to move thousands of men, combat aircraft and tons of ammunition around the globe provides our nation with what the military calls "forward presence." The USS Saratoga, one of the Navy's first super-carriers, was built in New York and launched in 1955. Cmdr. Jack Everling, a Navy fighter pilot, joined the crew of the Saratoga on her maiden voyage. In 1957, the Commander in Chief, President Dwight D. Eisenhower, arrived on board to personally inspect the latest addition to the Navy's fleet. At the height of the Cold War, tension between the United States and the Soviet Union brought the world to the edge of nuclear war. During the Cuban Missile Crisis, President John F. Kennedy dispatched the Saratoga to patrol the area around Cuba. Thanks to the courage of the president and the swift response by Navy ships like the Saratoga, the security of our nation was restored.

Providence is reborn in the '90s,
approaching the millennium
in a blaze of glory
Also: The price of revitalization
By Scott MacKay and Jody McPhillips
Journal Staff Writers PROVIDENCE In the beginning, there was pavement.
Vast, cracked, dun-colored plains of it, from the State House lawns to the bundle of railroad tracks that slashed the city from west to east.
Great flat plates of concrete curved away to the southeast, where the stone pillar of the War Memorial rose up at the base of College Hill, in the middle of a no man's land known as Suicide Circle.
If you knew where to look, you might catch a glint of water, sliding under a bridge-turned-parking-lot to the west, under the U.S. Post Office, under the cars that honked and jostled as they struggled through downtown.
On a good day, it was ugly. On a bad day, it looked like a cross between a moonscape and a stockyard, its vacant spaces filled with cars instead of cows.
It was Providence as the 1990s began.

Below is a sampling of newspaper endorsements from around the country based on information provided by the campaigns, web searches, news reports and Yahoo's listing. Overall Gov. also possibly of interest Endorsements by National Organizations
It is generally believed that newspaper endorsements or recommendations do not have much impact on voting decisions in the general election presidential race, as voters have many opportunities to view the candidates on television and read about their doings. Newspaper endorsements may be more important in primary races when candidates are striving for credibility, and they likely have a greater impact in people's decisions about ballot measures and local candidates. Nonetheless, by long tradition most newspapers do endorse in the presidential race. Depending on the paper, the editorial board, the publisher or the owner may weigh in to varying degrees to determine who the paper backs. Regardless of their impact or lack of impact, endorsements do offer well written, thoughtful views on the candidates' strengths and weaknesses. General Election Bush Gore Alabama
