A city of southeast Rhode Island at the mouth of Narragansett Bay south-southeast of Providence. Settled in 1639, it was an important economic center in pre-Revolutionary times and in the 19th century became a fashionable summer resort where the wealthy built palatial “cottages.” The mansions and restored colonial buildings still attract tourists to the city, as do its tennis museum and yachting facilities. Newport hosts yacht races and was the site of the America 's Cup races until the early 1980s. Tennis was popularized there; the National Tennis Hall of Fame is in the Newport casino. Jazz and folk festivals, as well as other music and dance fests are held there. The city is the seat of Salve Regina Univ., the U.S. Naval War College, and other naval training schools. Fort Adams State Park is nearby. Newport Bridge (1969) spans the east passage of Narragansett Bay, linking the city with Jamestown.

History And Facts About The Ocean State
Natives and Explorers
Indigenous people, mistakenly named “Indians” by Columbus, were the first inhabitants of present-day Rhode Island. European contacts with Rhode Island and its coastline have been claimed for several explorers, including medieval Irish adventurers, Norsemen, Portuguese navigator Miguel Corte-Real, and Italian navigator Giovanni Verrazano.
Sailing to Rhode Island in 1524, Verrazano “discovered an island in the form of a triangle, distant from the mainland ten leagues, about the bigness of the (Greek) Island of Rhodes,” which he named Luisa after the Queen Mother of France. This was Block Island. Roger Williams and other early settlers thought that Verrazano was referring to Aquidneck Island and changed that island’s native name to

Joseph T. Scott. "Rhode Island." From United States Gazetteer This is one of the earliest American maps of Rhode Island, from the first American gazetteer. Joseph T. Scott, a Philadelphia engraver and publisher, issued his gazetteer during the early days of American cartography, and the maps of the individual states and territories are very good. Scott included much detail of rivers, counties, roads, and towns. This map of Rhode Island shows fine information of the road system throughout the state, with indications of settlements including Providence, E. Greenwich, and Newport. As an early example of American cartography and an fascinating document of Rhode Island history, this is a gem.
Harding Harris. "Rhode-Island and Connecticut." From Jedidiah Morse's The American Universal Geography An early American map of Rhode Island and Connecticut issued in Boston in 1796. This map was from Jedidiah Morse's Geography , one of the first American publications of its kind. Morse, the father of Samuel F.B. Morse, established himself in the 1780s as one of the leading producers of American maps. The topography of the state is denoted, with rivers, roads, counties, towns, and other features indicated and named. One of only a few of the state issued in the eighteenth century.
