Staff in the Office of Teacher Preparation, Certification, and Professional Development is working to create a seamless licensure system, based on Professional Teaching Standards, that defines teaching in Rhode Island. To that end, we are committed to approving educator preparation programs that assess candidate performance to standards, the recertification of educators through the completion of Individual Professional Development Plans (I-Plans), and providing on-going high quality professional development for all Rhode Island educators. Educational Programs Inside Mental Illness is the NAMI Rhode Island education program specifically directed to young people. While other sources offer information about mental health in terms of stress management or violence prevention, Inside Mental Illness educates youth specifically about the major biologically based brain disorders. The content includes the most current information about symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment of mental illness and also very directly addresses the issue of stigma. The teaching team is composed of individuals living successfully with mental illness who are very personable and open about their experience. Inside Mental Illness is an interactive educational outreach program designed for eighth- and ninth-grade public school students but adaptable to any level. The content has been designed to reach young people at an age when they are capable of absorbing new information but their values and attitudes are still open to change. The course is divided into two forty-five minute segments, usually one week apart; meeting the teachers once and greeting them as friends for the second class establishes a bond important to the emotional impact of the stigma segment. NAMI-RI's School Outreach Program has reached hundreds of individuals and every school district in Rhode Island. There are two basic presentations: one focused on the staff needs of elementary school age children, and the other for those concerned with middle and high school students. Both presentations are accredited by the state department of education for professional development credit. The presentation team includes the Assistant Director of NAMI-RI, an education professional who is also a parent, and a young adult who reflects on the experience of growing up with a mental illness. A twenty-five-page packet of information and resources is distributed to each participant.
