The Northern rhode island Collaborative offers a broad range of related services that transition initiatives outlined in special education regulations.
http://www.ri.net/NORICO/related.html
The Northern Rhode Island Collaborative offers a broad range of related services that assist students with disabilities to benefit from special education. Related services that are contracted to member districts include Speech and Language Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Social Work Services, Adaptive Physical Education, School Health Services, Job Development and Placement Services, Vocational Evaluation Services and Educational Evaluation Services. Occupational and Physical Therapy Occupational and physical therapy services are provided to many member districts by a staff of full and part time therapists. These efforts have resulted in the delivery of quality services at a competitive rate. Previously, school districts contracted with a variety of private individuals and agencies to provide these services. Adaptive Physical Education The goal of the adaptive physical education program is to develop gross motor skills which will increase endurance, cardiovascular fitness and expand body awareness. Physical education is also an important component in developing appropriate social skills. Clinical Resource Team The Northern Rhode Island Collaborative has developed a multi-disciplinary Clinical Resource Team that provides remediation, early intervention, prevention and support services to districts within the northern Rhode Island area. The Team consists of a Social Worker, a Teacher, an Instructional Assistant and psychiatric and/or psychological consultation as needed. The goal of this Team is to provide assistance to the districts regarding difficult to manage students who are at risk for more restrictive or out-of-district placement and to build the capacity for school districts to perform in a similar fashion.

There are currently 7 charter schools in operation serving 914 students. Recent changes in the charter school legislation have eliminated the cap in the amount of federal grants that could be awarded to the charter school project, allowing the Rhode Island Department of Education to provide grants totaling more than the original cap of $150,000. For a list of Charter Schools in this state, contact the State Department of Education. Contact information appears below. Participants Rhode Island Participants Key Contacts Legislative Summary Passed in 1995, Rhode Island charter law set a school cap at 20 (which expired in 1996), including 10 schools designed to benefit "at-risk" students. A maximum of 6% of the state's school age population can attend charter schools. The State Board of Regents grants charters, with approval of the Commissioner of Elementary and Secondary Education or local board. Charter school operators may include existing public schools, groups of public school personnel, public school districts, or Rhode Island nonprofits, colleges, or universities. Charter terms are 5 years. General-purpose funding is comparable to other public schools in the state, although state categorical fund allocations depend upon the number of low-income and special needs students in the charter school, as compared to the district. Schools are not automatically waived of state education regulations and must apply if a waiver is desired. Charter schools are subject to state and national educational goals and standards.

That further highlights the fact that we need to do more to ensure that our students graduate with the knowledge they need to succeed in the workplace. This grant will help us institute a more challenging curriculum for students and require a demonstration of proficiency for graduation.” According to a recent study by the Manhattan Institute, 32 percent of Rhode Island students graduate high school ready for college, which reflects the national average. This effort will help ensure that students learn and are assessed on the high-level skills needed to perform well in college and sought by employers. “We need to think about performance other than simply years in the classroom,” said Adeline Becker, executive director of Brown University’s Education Alliance. “We want to go beyond one-size-fits-all assessments and create evaluations that are meant to assess performance and determine if a student is ready to graduate.”
