General Education
: General Information
College is collaborative; students and faculty work together so that students graduate with enhanced skills and with a foundation for more specialized learning. The student who achieves the goals of General Education speaks persuasively, listens receptively, writes clearly and rhetorically, critically analyzes and synthesizes information and perspectives, engages in critical reading, and explores and applies technology. General Education consists of both a Core Curriculum and of Distribution Requirements . In the Core, students will take a set of four related courses which provide an understanding of cultural and historical traditions which have shaped the world in which we live and a critical appreciation of values, ideas, and practices, which have emerged from these traditions. Courses in the Core are writing intensive with an emphasis on critical thinking. In the Distribution, students will take six courses which enlarge their learning by exposure to social and behavioral sciences, to visual and performing arts, and to natural sciences and mathematical systems.
Beginning in the Fall of 1996, General Education is required of all degree seeking undergraduate students at Rhode Island College. Entering students will complete all the requirements listed. Students who matriculated prior to the Fall of 1996 should consult the Catalog, the Course Bulletin, or see their advisor for a description as to how previous general education coursework will be credited toward General Education.

If Dr. Seuss had a gifted child ....
by Mary Beth Northrup
Dear Mom-I-am, dear Mom-I-am, we have a problem, Mom-I-am. Your son won't do what he must do. He drives me crazy, yes it's true! He will stall and squirm and hum, and leave all of his work undone. He dreams and will not pay attention, have you considered medication? With other kids he does not play, he is alone much of the day. Something does not seem quite right, because I know he must be bright. He seems to learn, despite the rest, but the work is not his best. He is disruptive, yes it's true. He just won't do what he must do! Yes, teacher, I can really see, how frustrating all this must be, A child who does not meet the norm, a child whose mold won't fit the form. I've had him tested on WISC-III, by your approved test agency. He scores far higher than the mean, there's more to this that can be seen. So help us, help us find the way, to teach this child best if we may. He is not like the rest you see, he acts and thinks far differently.

What agency runs the program ? Special education services are provided by local public school systems. Most cities and towns in Rhode Island run their own special education programs. A few cities and towns have joined together to provide special education services: Bristol and Warren; Charleston, Hopkinton, and Richmond; Exeter and West Greenwich; Foster, Scituate and Glocester; and Little Compton, Tiverton, Portsmouth and Middletown. School systems will evaluate a child to determine whether the child is eligible for special education services. A parent, teacher, or other professional working with a child (e.g. a doctor) can request an evaluation. To request an evaluation for your child, you should contact your public school system's special education office. It is best to put your request for an evaluation in writing, and to date and keep a copy of your request.
