Dick Russell, a successful author and conservation activist, has written a book about the restoration efforts called Striper Wars, and on Aug. 4 he plans to give a presentation and sign books. Russell's talk will be at 7 p.m. at the Audubon Society of Rhode Island's Environmental Education Center, in Bristol. The event is free and open to the public, but reservations are required. Call (401) 245-7500, ext. 18. For his efforts on behalf of stripers, Russell was given the Chevron Conservation Award in 1988. A longtime sportfisherman, Russell spent three years fighting for stronger regulations to protect stripers. He organized a national conference in Washington and made numerous radio and television appearances. Russell's last book, Eye of the Whale, followed the migration of gray whales from Mexico's Baja peninsula to northern Alaska and Siberia. It was named the Best Book of 2001 by the Los Angeles Times.

PROVIDENCE - The Department of Environmental Management has announced that beginning this week Rhode Island's 80-plus charter and party boat captains will be asked to participate in a new data collection survey system to elicit improved catch and effort statistics for recreational marine fisheries. The program, called the For-Hire Survey, is being implemented on a coast-wide basis by the National Marine Fisheries Service in collaboration with the state partners of the Atlantic Coastal Cooperative Statistics Program, of which Rhode Island is a member. In Rhode Island, a weekly random sampling of charter fishing boat captains will be asked to report their fishing effort from the previous week, such as number of trips, number of anglers, targeted species, area fished and number of fish caught. In addition, an observer will collect catch and discard data on selected large party boat trips.
