President of Rhode Island College Born and raised in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, where he was educated in the public school system, John Nazarian is a 1954 graduate of the Rhode Island College of Education (known since 1960 as Rhode Island College). As of 2004, he has been with the College for 54 years as student, teacher, and administrator. One of eleven children, President Nazarian is an accomplished musician with an abiding interest in music and the performing arts. Following his graduation from the College with a Bachelor of Education, concentration in Mathematics and Science, he went on to earn an A.M. in Mathematics and Education from Brown University in 1956, followed in 1961 by an A.M. in Mathematics from the University of Illinois. He earned his Ph.D. in Mathematics from New York University in 1967. His career at Rhode Island College began immediately following his graduation in 1954, when he was appointed by President William Gaige as an Instructor of Mathematics and Physics. He was promoted to Assistant Professor in 1958, Associate Professor in 1967, and full Professor in 1971.

Writing Scores Are Among the Nation's Best: Rhode Island ranks 9th in the nation for having the largest proportion of public school 4th graders scoring at the highest two levels in writing in the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). RCW Writing Scores Are Up: The proportion of Rhode Island public school 8th graders who scored at the highest two levels in writing in the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) increased by 16% between 1998 and 2002 RCW Math Scores Are Up: The proportion of Rhode Island public school 4th graders who scored at the highest two levels in mathematics in the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) more than doubled between 1992 and 2003. Rhode Island The Rhode Island Diabetes Prevention and Control Program (DPCP) has received funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention since 1979. Activities supported by the Rhode Island DPCP include the following:
  • Coordinating the Rhode Island Diabetes Advisory Council. The Council, whose 24 members have diverse professional, community, and business backgrounds, has had many successes. The Council played a key role in successfully passing legislation on reimbursement for diabetes supplies and services, including diabetes education and nutrition counseling. The Council's key affiliations and projects are
    • Diabetes Resource Center (DRC) - The Minority Subcommittee established the DRC for people with diabetes living in inner city areas. The DRC serves short-term and long-term needs of people with diabetes who cannot afford diabetes-related health care, medications, or culturally appropriate diabetes education. Diabetes Outpatient Education (DOE) Board and DOE Educators - The DOE Board coordinates and certifies state diabetes education programs and educators including nurses, dieticians, and pharmacists (currently 172 DOE educators serving all populations in Rhode Island). Diabetes education classes are offered in 35 locations throughout the state with 267 patients per educator.

The regional governing board oversees the activities of the LAB and is involved in program planning, priority setting, and evaluation. The board's diligence and engagement have enabled the LAB to pursue a mission consistent with regional needs and our commitment to educational excellence and equity. It’s Not Easy Bein’ Green—
But it should be. All it takes for a university to earn a rating from FIRE is for the university not to maintain any policies that violate the First Amendment rights of its students and faculty. Sadly, however, few schools have a green light rating. One school, SUNY Binghamton, is so close to a green light that FIRE wants to take this opportunity to draw attention to its policies in the hopes that it will decide to fully honor its own stated commitments to freedom of speech by upholding the First Amendment rights of its students and faculty.
