Education Center Some pupils ill-prepared for college A report shows Rhode Island's high school curriculum does not prepare all students for rigorous college-level work. 01:00 AM EST on Tuesday, March 9, 2004 BY LINDA BORG Journal Staff Writer Rhode Island high schools do a good job of preparing their best students for college but they are not nearly as successful in getting students who are not on the college track ready for higher education. Thirty percent of the students who enrolled in the Community College of Rhode Island in 2001 did not return the following year, according to a study done by Jack Warner, the commissioner of higher education. Nearly 60 percent of the freshman class took two or more remedial courses during their first year at CCRI. That number is significant, Warner said, because studies have shown that students who need a lot of remedial work are more likely to drop out of college. This was the first time someone has looked at how well public and private school students are doing in Rhode Island's three public colleges. In 2001, 10,083 students graduated from high school in Rhode Island. More than one-fourth of those students enrolled in CCRI, Rhode Island College or the University of Rhode Island.

Education Center A new chapter Rhode Island is trying a new approach to ensure that a high school diploma means something. 01:00 AM EDT on Sunday, October 31, 2004 BY LINDA BORG
Journal Staff Writer
Rhode Island is conducting a daring experiment in public education unlike any other in the nation. If it is successful, the traditional comprehensive high school, organized around 50-minute periods and a system of isolated departments, will be a thing of the past. Beginning with this freshmen class, students will no longer be able to graduate from high school by punching the clock sitting through four years of classes and accumulating so many Carnegie units, or credits. Instead, seniors must prove that they have mastered certain skills or competencies. Some will put together a portfolio of their best work: essays, projects and artwork. Others will complete a senior project that involves work experience and culminates in a public presentation. Still others will demonstrate their skills through end-of-course exams or problem-solving exercises performed in class. This year, high schools must choose two out of four types of assessment to measure student proficiency. They might choose a portfolio and a senior project or end-of-course exams and a Certificate of Initial Mastery. (The certificate is a multiyear project that incorporates portfolios, testing and senior projects.) Then the schools must make sure that all their students have ample opportunity through internships, research projects or classroom assessments to prove their mastery in English, math, science, social studies, the arts and technology.

What Does the School Board Do?
(Page 1 of 1) The school board sets the vision for the school district and the decisions they make at their monthly meetings make a difference for your school. By GreatSchools.net Staff The word "public" in public school refers to the fact that it is the citizens themselves who control the public schools. In most states, they do this in part by electing a school board ofdepending on the size and configuration of the districtthree, five or seven members who must be residents of the school district. The most important thing a school board does is to establish a vision for the community's schools that reflects a consensus of the board, community and district staff. The school board has a wide variety of additional responsibilities, such as adopting a balanced annual budget and issuing interim financial reports, adopting the school calendar, negotiating contracts with employee unions, approving curriculum materials and closing or constructing schools.

TO: Superintendents FROM: Peter McWalters, Commissioner RE: Board of Regents Policy Statement on Discrimination Based on Sexual Orientation The Rhode Island Board of Regents for Elementary and Secondary Education recognizes that full access of all people and groups to educational opportunities and full participation in educational experiences should be the policy and practice of educational agencies. All individuals and groups must be afforded the opportunity to participate fully and thereby reach their maximum potential. Barriers to student participation which are based on sexual orientation must be identified and removed. Certain students, because of their actual or perceived sexual orientation, have been subject to discrimination through abuse, harassment, or exclusion from full participation in educational activities. These conditions undermine the goals of Civil Rights activities in education; i.e., to remove barriers, promote nondiscrimination and support the provision of equal educational opportunities. The Board also recognizes that all students, without exception, have the right to come to school and feel safe.

http://www.docboard.org/ri/about.htm
About the Board
Protecting the public and assuring high practice and professional standards in the physician community:
The Rhode Island Board of Medical Licensure and Discipline
Introduction:
“The health and dignity of my patient will ever be my first concern. I will hold in confidence all that my patient relates to me. I will not permit consideration of race, gender, sexual preference, religion, nationality or social standing to come between me and my duty to anyone in need of my services. This pledge I make freely and upon my honor” (Excerpt from the Physician’s Oath recited by graduating students of the Brown Medical School.)
Few professions involve the unique privileges and responsibilities that medicine and osteopathy requires of practitioners in modern American society. Upon entering the profession we all pledge to uphold a high standard of professional behavior that selflessly places our patients’ interests above our own. So extraordinary is this role and so necessary is this commitment, that every state operates a governmental agency to monitor and enforce the professional conduct of physicians. Little did I realize, when I recited the Physicians Oath after completing medical school at Brown that I would one day take on a key responsibility for this process in my home state of Rhode Island. In September 2003 Governor Carcieri approved my appointment as Chief Administrator of the Rhode Island Medical Board of Licensure and Discipline (the Board) based on the recommendation of Dr. Patricia A. Nolan, RI Director of Health. I already knew a lot about the Board, of course, and frequently interacted with it in my capacity as residency program Director at the Memorial hospital (Pawtucket, RI) since 1995. During the summer, I began to prepare myself by attending several Board sessions and meeting individually with members. As the summer unfolded, I developed a more complete understanding of the Board, its role and vision—an understanding that I would like to share with my professional colleagues.
