On October 26, 1985, captain of the ultimate frisbee team Ethan Yates snuck Amnesty International Student Chairperson Faith Waltham into this dorm room and deflowered her, despite the fact that he was supposedly exclusively dating Sunny Shapiro, who was at the time off-campus serving a suspension for running out on a check at the local Denny's. Upon climaxing, Ethan immediately informed Faith that if she ever told anyone about their encounter, he would deny it, because she was, in his words, "just too ugly." Several psychiatrists concur that this incident was a direct cause of the bullimia which plagued Faith throughout her high school and college years. Whether it also led to her subsequent self-identification as a lesbian is a Nature v. Nurture debate that is best deferred. SITE 4. BUSHES BEHIND TAYLOR BOYS DORM

How racist hatred touched two lives By CHRIS POON
    Journal-Bulletin Staff Writer
The year was 1832. Tuition at Prudence Crandall's boarding school "for young ladies and little misses" in Canterbury, Conn., was a modest $18 a term. Crandall, who was born in Hopkinton, offered a cultured education, including classes in moral philosophy, music, drawing and "French, taught by a gentleman." Her efforts to groom women into young scholars were praised in the well- to-do village of Canterbury until Crandall entertained radical notions of admitting black students in her school. Then trouble started. Sarah Harris, 19, was the first black student to enroll, carrying hopes that she would one day become a teacher of her own people. Soon, parents of white girls threatened to remove their daughters from Crandall's tutelage. Faced with the prospect of closing her school, Crandall wrote to abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison for advice.

Zero de Conduite Historical Background: Although Jean Vigo died at just twenty-nine years of age (from tuberculosis) and completed just four rather short films, two of those films are widely admired and somewhat influential: and Zero de Conduite . His influence was felt by such later French directors as Renoir and Truffaut. Zero de Conduite was remade by Lindsay Anderson as if he had lived a more nearly average lifespan. Although his works lack polish and cohesiveness, they exhibit a fierce independence of spirit, a rich poetic imagination, and a creative surrealistic expressiveness. Vigo was the son of a militant anarchist, Miguel Almareyda. After his father died in prison, Vigo grew up in French boarding schools, providing the experience that he drew upon for

Originally published in Needle Pointers , Volume XIV, Number 2, February/March '86 I pray that risen from the dead, I may in glory stand A crown, perhaps, upon my head, But with a needle in my hand. - a sampler verse - Certainly this is the lament of many truehearted stitchers, but nary a stitcher among us can truly claim to be born with a needle in their hand. Stitching is surely a learning process, and the hands that ply stitches have had the guidance of wiser teaching hands. This has repeated itself throughout history. From the 17th through the 19th Century, children from three to as old as ten were often sent to dame schools. These schools were usually conducted by widowed women of reduced means in their homes or rented buildings. The education though rudimentary, frequently, included needlework This was available only for the fortunate female, and for many it would be their single brush with formal education Plain sewing, knitting and marking samplers were usually taught. (It is interesting, to note that most extant male samplers appear to have been made in dame schools.) These marking samplers would prepare the students for the task of marking textiles so necessary for their laundering and rotation, and for ownership and legacy purposes.

Home About Project Executive Summary The Partners ... Links Safety Annotations (by author) Journal of Counseling and Development National Bureau of Economic Research , working paper 6974. Cambridge, MA: 1999 This is an academic paper geared largely towards policymakers, which discusses the constantly changing situation of foreign-born inmates in both state and federal prisons. Provides a comprehensive background of state, federal and INS policy in the last twenty years and a lengthy cost analysis, but pre-dates the post-9/11 policy changes regarding foreign-born people in the penal system. Business Week , 31 May 2004: 58-65 Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology Journal of Sociology and Social Welfare In this article, the authors highlight a previous study done in an attempt to understand the manner in which special populations of children are targeted for family preservation services. These services provide intervention for families at risk of loosing their children. While sixteen different types of special populations were used in the study, this article concentrates solely on the findings that are related to children of color. The primary reason for the focus on children of color in the study is because this group is believed to demonstrate the highest risk of remaining in substitute care for extended periods of time. Findings of the study illustrate a strong bias against targeting special populations. Evaluating the findings, the authors believe that family preservation programs will be more successful if more effort is made to target special populations. Overall, the article is well-organized, elaborate, and informative.

PROVIDENCE Did you know that Providence had a thriving public school system by the late 1840s, and that the city of Richmond, Va., did not? Or that Providence had a burgeoning anti-slavery movement? You would if you had studied city directories from the period, the rough equivalent of a modern phone book. These were some of the original documents viewed by about 30 Providence social studies teachers during a weeklong study of American history from 1800 to 1860. The project is paid for by part of a three-year, $871,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Education. History is so much more than the accretion of names, dates and events, according to Bill Ross of The National Council for History Education, which cosponsored the summer institute with the Providence schools. It is much more than the narrative of dead, white men. "As a child, we like to listen to stories," Ross says. "Stories are what stick with you."
