Native American Tribal Life
American Indians are those peoples who were on the North American continent before the arrival of Christopher Columbus in 1492. There were hundreds of different tribes native to both North and South America. Historically we have called these Native peoples Indians by mistake - Columbus thought he had reached the Continent of India. Today we use the term American Indian because that is the term used in the Constitution . Indian tribes call themselves by many names. They might be known by both an English name and a name in their tribal language. The Navajo call themselves Dine' which means "the People." The Tohono O'odham (People of the Desert) were known for many years by the name Papago. The Constitution of the United States specifically refers to Indian tribes where it says that "Congress shall have the power to regulate Commerce with foreign nations, among the several states, and with the Indian tribes." There are over five hundred and fifty American Indian tribes that have tribal governments that are recognized by the United States in a government to government relationship. There are also approximately 300 federal Indian reservations in the United States. On an Indian reservation the tribal government performs many of the same functions that State governments do. There are tribal court systems, departments of justice and police forces on most reservations.

"Off-Reservation Boarding Schools in Contemporary Indian Education"
- The historical perception of off-reservation boarding schools as institutions of cultural genocide conflicts with the strong support for the remaining residential schools from the Indian communities they serve. Reconciling the supposed contradictions requires close examination of the changes that have occurred in the goals and philosophies of these schools. My research examines these changes in two off-reservation boarding schools still in operation, Santa Fe Indian School, Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Chemawa Indian School, Salem, Oregon. Michele Murphy , Amherst College
"The Social and Economic Effects of the US Dollar in 21st Century Cuba"
- With the legalization of the US dollar in 1993, and increases in the flow of currency into Cuba from migration and tourism, the Cuban economy and society have both seen widening divisions between the dollar sector and the peso sector. The dollar has not only created a difference between the rich and the poor but has also created increased separation along racial and regional lines. Along with the influx of American dollars has been an influx of US cultural and material ideas as well, which I see as the first step towards the propagation of US cultural values in Cuban society.

Indian Treaties have the same recognition under federal law as do treaties with foreign governments such as France or Germany. Some Indian Reservations are land bases that are larger than some states. The Navajo Reservation is approximately 14,000,000 acres of land. The State of Massachusetts is only 5,284,480 acres. The Wind River Reservation in Wyoming is 1,888,000 acres. The State of Rhode Island is 776,960 acres. There are twelve Indian Reservations that are larger than Rhode Island and nine reservations larger than Delaware (1,316,480 acres). The Navajo Reservation, which is the largest, is larger than nine States (Maryland, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Hawaii, Connecticut, Deleware and Rhode Island).

Do I need to be a Roman Catholic to attend the school?
Although Portsmouth is one of two Catholic boarding schools on the East coast, and two-thirds of the student body is Catholic, you do not have to be Catholic to attend. Our non-Catholic students often remark about how comfortable they are in a Catholic environment in which they are not pressured to amend their beliefs, but are encouraged to share their personal opinions both in and out of the classroom. I noticed that all students are required to play a sport each season. Do I have to be an athlete to attend the school? Portsmouth has enjoyed a fine tradition of successful athletics, fielding teams composed of both proven athletes and also students who arrive at Portsmouth with no prior athletic experience. In addition to the afternoon sports selections, students may opt to share their time with others through a community service internship or participate in a dramatic production of the theater department. What do students do on the weekends? Each weekend, Portsmouth provides activities both on and off-campus in order to entertain our students. Regularly scheduled dances, lectures, athletic contests, and movies occupy students? free time, as well as frequent bus trips to Newport, Providence, Boston, and local mountains for skiing.
