Endangered white rhino survives Congo civil war
Two dozen white rhinos are known to have survived Congo's civil war May 14, 1998 Web posted at: 7:51 p.m. EDT (2351 GMT) By Environmental News Network staff (ENN) The northern white rhino, the world's most threatened sub-species of rhinoceros, has conquered the odds and survived last year's civil war in Congo, WWF-World Wide Fund For Nature said Wednesday. WWF believes there is still hope the world will be able to save the critically endangered species. A survey of the status of the rhino population and its habitat, now being carried out by WWF in Garamba National Park in the northeast part of the country formerly known as Zaire, has shown at least 24 animals have survived or been born since fighting broke out in 1996, when WWF conservation specialists had to be evacuated from the area. Garamba is the only known place on Earth where the northern white rhino still exists in the wild. "We were afraid what we would find," said Dr. Sheila O'Connor, interim director of the WWF Africa and Madagascar Program. "Given the relative instability in the area, it was impossible to carry out any conservation activities for most of last year and it was not until recently that we were able to go into the park, pick up what was left and continue our work. But with an estimate of only 20-30 individuals before the war started, the number of survivors was anybody's guess."

Endangered elephants, gorillas and rhinoceros receive the relief services they need through IFAW's global campaigns to save threatened species and habitat. We focus on three major animal conservation areas: reducing commercial exploitation and trade, saving animals in distress, and preserving habitat. The IFAW supports CITES efforts to help protect animals who are being exploited due to illegal wildlife trade. IFAW's Emergency Relief Team helps national and local organizations to save animals when natural and man made disasters occur. Our rapid response capabilities allow us to save animals that might otherwise be lost to storms, oil spills and other disasters. We also fight habitat destruction around the world including protecting animals from the effects of coastal habitat devastation, mining, wetland destruction and much more. Recent IFAW efforts include these animal conservation and habitat preservation programs:

Animals/Fish/Birds/Plants Protecting Endangered Species What is the problem? Animals and plants that are having trouble surviving in today's world are classified as either endangered or threatened.
  • Endangered Species - Those animals or plants with so few individual survivors that the species could soon become extinct over all or most of its natural range. (Examples include: the Whopping Crane in North America, the Giant Panda, the California Condor, the Snow Leopard and the Black Rhino.)
Threatened Species - Those animals or plants still abundant in their natural range but declining in numbers and likely to become endangered. (Examples are: the Bald Eagle, the Grizzly Bear and the American Alligator.)
What's being done? Since "extinct" is forever, biologists and environmentalists are working together to manage and protect biodiversity (the ability of many different species to thrive within a particular region). Here are three ways they do it:
  • Wildlife Management Approach - manages game species for sustained yield by using laws to regulate hunting, establishing harvest quotas, developing population management plans and using international treaties to protect migrating game species such as water fowl.
Ecosystem Approach - aims to preserve balanced populations of species in their native habitats, establish legally protected wilderness areas and wildlife reserves and eliminate alien species.

Endangered Animal Printouts Endangered animals are those species that are in danger of going extinct. Their reproductive rates are lower than their mortality rates over long periods of time, so their numbers are diminishing. The reasons for this are varied, but lately, very often involves a loss of habitat as people encroach on their living areas. When a species is listed as endangered or threatened, it is not a death sentence. Many animals, like the bald eagle and the American alligator, were on the brink of extinction and are now recovering. Many species, however, will not recover, and could be lost forever. Throughout time, animal species have been going extinct (long before people evolved); paleontologists estimate that well over 90 percent of all plant and animal species that ever existed have gone extinct.

December 12, 2000 On Nov. 18, a white rhinoceros was born at the Fossil Rim Wildlife Center near Glen Rose. The Rhino was named Ajabu, which means "surprise" in Swahili, and weighed in at 136 pounds. Fully grown, she will tip the scales at 5,000 pounds. Ajabu is the second white rhino born at Fossil Rim this year, which is significant, says Bruce Williams, the center's vice president of conversation, because "there aren't but maybe four rhinos born in captivity a year. To have two in 12 months is truly awesome. Rhinos are an endangered species; white rhinos are on the "threatened" list. Fossil Rim is paying a major role in preserving the species. How did the rhinoceros almost become extinct?

Children, especially, are captivated by animals, particularly animals that are unusual to them. But zoos have a wonderful effect on adults, too. Texas' biggest cities are home to some of the best zoos in the U.S. But there are also some great zoos in a few Texas cities where you wouldn't necessarily expect to find them. Here is our rundown of the best zoos in Texas: Fort Worth Zoo
The Fort Worth Zoo houses 435 species of animals, including 35 endangered species. It is the only zoo in the U.S. to house representatives of all four Great Ape species — gorillas, orangutans, bonobos and chimpanzees; and the only zoo in Texas with pygmy chimps. This zoo has one of the largest reptile collections in the U.S., and is also one of only five zoos in the world to display three of the five rhino species in captivity: black, white and one-horned Asian rhinos. Info: (817) 759-7555. Dallas Zoo
The Dallas Zoo's nearly 100 acres, in the Oak Cliff section of Dallas, are home to around 8,000 animals. It's the oldest zoo in Texas, founded in 1888. The park's six habitats can be toured by monorail via the Monorail Safari, a one-mile tour lasting about 25 minutes. The Dallas Zoo is a participant in the national Species Survival Plans for 37 species, including gorillas, tigers, chimps, lemurs, okapis and Bali mynahs. Info: (214) 670-5656.

Wildlife conservation and complementary medicines
Department of Environment and Heritage, 2003 Of the eight tiger subspecies in the world, three have become extinct in the last 50 years. There may be fewer than 20 South China tigers left in the world. The kind assistance of Dr C Xue and Dr J Zhang in producing this document is acknowledged. Thank you.
What is the issue?
Many of the world's animals and plants are threatened because of human activity, such as hunting, poaching and the uncontrolled trade in wildlife and wildlife parts. One factor driving this trade is the demand for animal and plant derivatives for use in complementary medicines. Some of these species, including the tiger and rhinoceros, are now in great danger of extinction. Complementary medicines (also known as 'traditional' or 'alternative' medicines) include vitamin, mineral, plant or herbal, naturopathic and/or homeopathic preparations and nutritional supplements. If endangered species continue to be used in complementary medicine, these species may become extinct. Ending the illegal trade in protected wildlife and wildlife parts will help prevent their further decline. While demand for properties contained in complementary medicine will continue, these can often be met from medically acceptable alternatives to protected animals and plants.
