Join a bright, witty, and engaging British and American faculty in historic Colonial Williamsburg in September to explore new perspectives on America's War for Independence. In comfortable surroundings, and in the company of interesting companions, you will enjoy thought-provoking lectures, a special tour of Yorktown Battlefield, and lively conversations focused on the American Revolution. This is a rare opportunity for you to study, discuss, and weave together the latest British and American points of view on the causes, the course, and the consequences of America's long struggle for independence. Designed for instruction and delight, this program is perfect for anyone interested in developing a broader, richer understanding of the extraordinary political, social, cultural, and military transformations occasioned by the American Revolution. Reflecting on these events in an environment conducive to discovery and learning will provide a broader context for thinking about important issues we face today. I hope you will join us as we examine the complex and fascinating realities of the struggle that forged a new nation and led to the birth of modern democracy.

The following events, however, all killed more people than the American Civil War, which cost approximately 620,000 lives.
  • Congo Free State
    • This is probably the least publicized megadeath of the 20th Century. A lot of natives died from colonial brutality, but no one really knows how many.
      • Roger Casement's original 1904 report estimated that as many as 3 million Congolese had died of disease, torture or shooting since 1888 (cited in Gilbert's History of the Twentieth Century ; also in Colin Legum, Congo Disaster Peter Forbath ( The River Congo (1977)): at least 5 million killed. John Gunther ( Inside Africa (1953)): 5-8 million deaths. Adam Hochschild ( Leopold's Ghost , (1998)): 10 million, or half the original population. Britannica , "Congo Free State": population declined from 20 or 30 million to 8 million.
