The Politics of Same Sex Marriage
Successful same-sex marriage legislation in Canada and Spain shows that left projects will always be greeted by conservatives with acrimony. Rather than wringing our hands about "polarization," we should look back to this history of other major left victories. PLUS: what's next after marriage for queer rights? On Tuesday, Canada’s House of Commons approved a bill that would change the definition of marriage to allow same-sex couples to legally marry throughout Canada. Though reactionary churches will not be forced to marry lesbian and gay couples, all Canadian institutions will be required to recognize same-sex marriages. Assuming that the Senate approves the bill, Canada will join the Netherlands, Belgium and Spain (as of today) as countries in which lesbian and gay people can legally get married. The Canadian and Spanish bills are both tremendous political victories, but they raise two important issues: one about the nature of party politics in representative democracies, and one about the future of what I will call the movement for queer rights.

SPANISH REVOLUTION OF 1936
See Jamal Hannah's Spain pages , and Archie Anderson's account of the November 1996 reunion . Eugene W. Plawiuk's extraordinarily well-linked site on Spain When Franco's fascist troops invaded Spain in July 1936 with the purpose of overthrowing the young and unstable Republic, the Spanish working class responded by making a revolution that went much further toward realizing the classless and stateless ideal of proletarian socialism than any preceding popular revolt. Spontaneously and almost overnight, workers seized factories and other workplaces; land was collectivized; workers' militias were formed throughout the country; the churchage-old enemy of all workingclass radicalism and indeed, openly profascistwas dismantled, and its property confiscated; established political institutions disintegrated or were taken over by workers' committees. In a decade of cataclysmic worldwide depression and spreading fascism, the revolution in Spain signaled a message of renewed hope to the scattered forces of working-class emancipation throughout the globe, not least in the United States. American intellectuals and unionists responded very favorably; for an overview of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade, click here Supporting the workers' revolution were Spain's largest unions, the anarcho-syndicalist

The Muslim Brotherhood had initially declared its explicit support of the Islamic revolution in Iran and had criticized the Shah's arrival in Egypt.(20) Its General Guide, 'Umar al-Tilmisani, supported the Islamic Associations (al-Jama'at al-Islamiya) opposition in the Egyptian universities to the Shah's arrival in Egypt. The organization particularly criticized the Shah's revival of pre-Islamic Persian traditions at the expense of Islamic ones,(21) and frequently cited the Iranian revolution as evidence of the eventual victory of those who followed the path of God. While it urged Muslims everywhere to emulate Muslims in Iran, it made it clear that it was not calling for revolution but rather for the unity of the rulers and the ruled under the banner of Islam.(22) The Iranian revolution, it is clear, gave the Muslim Brotherhood greater self-confidence.

Norman E. Saul May 2001

Cloth ISBN 0-7006-1090-1, $45.00 For Russia, it was a time of troubles: war, famine, and social upheaval the likes of which the world had never seen before. World War I, two revolutions in 1917, and the subsequent civil war and Allied intervention completely eradicated one regime and replaced it with a radically new one. Now an award-winning diplomatic historian ties these events together to reveal their far-reaching consequences for the future of not only the new Soviet Union but of the United States as well. In War and Revolution , Norman Saul offers a fresh analysis of this troubled era in Russia and of the American reaction to it. Tracing the events surrounding America's entry into the European conflict and its encouragement of continued Russian participation even in the face of domestic unrest, he shows how those circumstances adversely affected relations between two nations and shaped their futures in the century ahead. Drawing on rarely accessed military and diplomatic archives in both countries, Saul reaches beyond official actions to give readers a vivid sense of those times. He surveys the vast panorama of events while providing not only detailed accounts of the activities of consular, diplomatic, and military staffs but also colorful vignettes of ordinary Americans in Russia involved in humanitarian relief and other activities. Businessmen and artists, Red Cross volunteers and journalists-all were caught up in the immediacy of war and revolution, and all contributed to the shifting sentiments of two nations.

While it is gratifying to see interest in the concepts of rotational readiness and unit cohesion, the disastrous decision to keep American soldiers and units in Iraq for 12 months at a time reinforces my broader reservations about Army transformation. Today, our ground force is apparently exhausted and incapable of securing the stretch of road from downtown Baghdad to Iraq's international airport. Thus, my greatest concern is that the current thrust of Army transformation may actually reduce the Army's fighting power and operational flexibility just as the international environment is placing greater demands on our ground forces.

... Catalog Overview The American Revolution is of signal importance in the study of American history. First, it severed the colonial relationship with England and legally created the United States. Second, the revolutionary generation formulated the political philosophy and laid the institutional foundations for the system of government under which we live. Third, the Revolution was inspired by ideas concerning natural rights and political authority that were transatlantic in reach, and its successful completion affected people and governments over a large part of the globe for many generations. Lastly, it called into question long-established social and political relationshipsbetween master and slave, man and woman, upper class and lower class, officeholder and constituent, and even parent and childand thus demarcated an agenda for reform that would preoccupy Americans down to the present day.
