The Treaty of Paris was signed in Paris, France on September 3, 1783. This ended the American Revolutionary War, and gave the colonies their independence from Great Britain. The 13 states were now free to join together and become the United States of America. They could now form their own government and make their own laws. This freedom was the most important effect of the American Revolution. New ideas like those expressed in the Declaration of Independence were now allowed to spread and grow in the new country. If the revolution had not taken place, we might still be under British rule today. The British gave America all of the land between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mississippi River, from Canada to the north and Florida to the south. The land east of the Mississippi River, between the Ohio River and the Great Lakes was known as the Northwest Territory. The English had taken this land from the French during the French and Indian War. The British had not allowed the colonists to move west over the Appalachian Mountains into this territory. They had "reserved" it for the Indian Nations. This land would now be open for settlement. After the war, the British Army and Navy agreed to leave all American territories. England had controlled trade in the colonies. They had forced the colonists to trade only with England and buy only English goods. They had placed heavy taxes on products from other countries. The United States was now able to trade freely with other countries of the world.

TITLE: "Hello, I Am Deborah Sampson" AUTHOR: Cheryl McCauley, Kessler Elementary, MT GRADE LEVEL/SUBJECT: 5 Social Studies (American History). Could be adapted for other subjects and grade levels. OVERVIEW: Many times it is difficult to get students interested in learning about people and events in American history. They do not realize that what people did during and after the Revolutionary War still affect us today. Students are also unaware that there were women who had important roles in the Revolutionary War. PURPOSE: The purpose of this activity is to get students more active in the learning process, to have students realize that it is people who have an impact on our history, to have students learn about the people and events in the American Revolution, and have students become aware of the shortage of information written about women during this time period. OBJECTIVE(s): As a result of this activity students will: 1. Identify important people and events from the American Revolution. 2. Identify the impact that certain people from the Revolutionary War had on our country's history and that we still feel today. 3. Rationalize why there is not a lot written about women during the Revolutionary War time period. 4. Rationalize how and why it is people who impact our history. 5. Tell how they, as citizens or the U.S., can or will impact future history. ACTIVITIES AND PROCEDURES: 1. Students choose a historical figure from the Revolutionary War and become that figure. (They can choose from the list or come up with one of their own). 2. Students will research their historical figure and make a list of the attributes of she/he. 3. Students will choose a product and present it in first person form to the class. (They can choose from the list or come up with their own product.) 4. Students will dress as their historical figure and be videotaped as they present their product. WOMEN IN WARTIME: From the American Revolution to Vietnam
Ironically, throughout American history war has been one of the most effective vehicles for the empowerment of women. The rigors and shortages of wartime have caused society as a whole to reconsider the strict distinctions made between "men's work" and "women's work." When presented with a choice between losing a war or temporarily abandoning traditional notions regarding division of labor between the sexes, America has invariably opted for the latter. Women who took on "men's work" during wartime usually did not view themselves as feminist revolutionaries; rather, most simply believed they were "helping" their men and doing what they could to further the war effort. However, by accepting greater responsibilities and taking on non-traditional duties, these women paved the way for significant future changes, including larger political roles for women, greater social freedom, and permanent shifts in the composition of the peacetime labor force. With men away from home in combat, women assumed a number of unfamiliar roles: sole caretakers of the home, farm, or family business; breadwinners in offices, factories, and commercial agriculture; nurses tending the wounded; soldiers (covertly) and non-combat military personnel; and vital labor for manufacturing war materials. When Johnny came marching home again, he found that it would not be so easy to simply send his wife back to domestic exile, for women's wartime efforts had both provided them with an increased sense of independence and led them to set their sights beyond the limited sphere of the home.

Congressional Mandate In 1996, Congress, concerned that "the historical integrity of many Revolutionary War sites and War of 1812 sites is at risk," enacted legislation calling for a study of historic sites associated with the two early-American wars. The purpose of the study is to 1) identify Revolutionary War sites and War of 1812 sites; 2) determine the relative significance of the sites; 3) assess short- and long- term threats to the integrity of the sites; 4) provide alternatives for the preservation and interpretation of the sites; and 5) research and propose land preservation techniques. The legislation defines "site" as "a site or structure situated in the United States that is thematically tied with the nationally significant events that occurred during the Revolutionary War… [and] the War of 1812."
Study Synopsis
The National Park Service (NPS) assembled an interdisciplinary Study Team from American Battlefield Protection and the Cultural Resources Geographic Information Systems program. Funds became available to begin the study in FY99.

Students will understand the following: One way to learn about the past is to read historical novels. Some people take one side or another in a war or other conflict; some people find themselves caught in the middle. Materials For this lesson, you will need: Copies of the young adult novel My Brother Sam Is Dead by James Lincoln Collier and Christopher Collier Optional: audiotaping and videotaping equipment Procedures This project is designed to help students see that in every war there are many viewpoints to consider; the issues involved are seldom cut and dried. Tell students they are going to read a novel that underscores the preceding statement.

The Revolution in Greenhorn on the Frontier
Set in seventeen seventy-three Pennsylvania, Harry and Sukey's story unfolds against the political climate that formed the foundation for the Revolutionary War. The work depicts the territorial struggles between Pennsylvania and Virginia, presents discussions of British versus American government, and mentions "radicals like Sam Adams and James Otis," and "the great tea boycott." All of these references, along with many others, give a clear sense of the great changes that are about to come and establish Greenhorn on the Frontier as a useful and exciting tool for examining the beliefs, hopes and dreams of the common people as America embarked upon its battle for independence.
The Revolution in Pennsylvania
Pennsylvania served a critical role during the Revolutionary War. In the Western part of the state territorial disputes between Pennsylvanians and Virginians raised questions of independence and governance. In the east Philadelphia was serving as the fledgling nation's governmental center; the First Continental Congress met in the city in 1774 and the Declaration of Independence itself was signed there in 1776. George Washington and his troops trained at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania during 1777 and 1778. Additionally, Battles were waged in Brandywine, Germantown, and Whitemarsh. The following links provide more information about Pennsylvania during the Revolution...

An Internet search can reveal a wealth of material about lesser-known aspects of the Revolutionary War such as the Loyalists viewpoint, African-American participation, and women's roles. This article provides a starter list of Web sites offering content that ranges from academic, to government sponsored, to "home-made." Each site offers a variety of avenues for exploration. Some Web sites, such as the National Park site (http://www.cr.nps.gov/military.html), are fairly general and can lead you to many related museums, historic houses, and battlefields-each with their own web sites, teacher materials, and historical information. Other Web sites, produced by reenactment groups and individuals, tend toward very precise information on their particular topic, bibliographies, and personal views on history. For example, the 2nd Virginia Regiment web site (http://www.secondvirginia.org) documents the regiment's 18th-century history which supports the Electronic Field Trip "Soldier of Liberty" storyline.
