    The Battle of the Battlefields

    Introduction
Many important battles were fought during America's War for Independence. Commemorating these battles helps to remind us of the tremendous risks and sacrifices that American colonists endured as they struggled for their freedom from British control. We know that the colonists eventually won the war, but the road to victory was by no means an easy one. Until the war finally ended, nobody knew for sure that Britain's powerful military forces could ever be defeated. American soldiers outnumbered the British in most battles, but they were inexperienced in the ways of war and poorly supplied with weapons and other equipment. British forces, on the other hand, were well trained and amply supplied by the English government with good-quality weapons, uniforms, and other equipment. The patriots did finally defeat the British, but along the way several battles ended in defeat and many soldiers lost their lives.
Today, these historic battles continue to shape our remembrances of America's struggle to gain independence. For this reason, the President of the United States has decided that the American people (and also visitors from other countries) should have the opportunity to learn more about the major battles of the War for Independence. He has authorized an award of $1,000,000 for the construction of a new museum at the site of the most important battle fought during the war. The main difficulty, the President has discovered, is determining which battle site should get the money. To make the right decision, the President needs your help!

The library's mission is the collection and dissemination of information on the period and the support of related programs. It was founded by Sol Feinstone (1888-1980), a businessman, philanthropist, and collector of Americana who emigrated from Lithuania in 1902 at age fourteen. The library was established in 1959 and opened on its present location in 1974. For years, Feinstone had been passionately interested in educating the American public about the early history of their country. He contemplated several options for displaying his collection of books and original eighteenth-century manuscripts on the Revolutionary period that he had amassed over five decades. While in his early eighties, Feinstone conceived and brought to fruition an idea to construct on his farm in Washington Crossing a library devoted to the study of the American Revolution.

A Unit Study on the American Revolution
I had great success with this unit with my son. He is a very hands-on learner and a former reluctant reader. Don’t let the topic overwhelm you. It isn’t just reserved for the Jr. and Sr. High student. There are many good activities, books, and websites that are easily scaleable for all age/grade levels. Below are the resources and activities that I used. You set your own calendar based on your own home schooling needs.
    GENERAL RESOURCES:
Teacher Created Materials thematic unit series has an activity book entitled “Revolutionary War” in their challenging level. I used this book with great success with my elementary age children, just modifying some of the activities and questions to better suit their level and learning style. As with the other books in this series, “Revolutionary War” uses two book selections to help frame their study: Johnny Tremaine by Esther Forbes and The Fighting Ground by Avi. I really like this series as it has an “across the curriculum” approach and gives a sample lesson plans that you can use or adjust. (ISBN 1-55734-293-8). Teacher Created Materials are usually available at teaching supplies stores or can be ordered direct from the company at their website which is www.teachercreated.com . Christian Book Distributors (CBD) also has several in the thematic unit series available for sell.
T.S. Denison publications has a book in its Time Traveler Series entitled “US History: American Revolution” which is another good across curriculum activity book for this study. (ISBN 590-219-3605) This series was written for 3rd to 6th grades; however, as with many of the resources that I use, most of the activities in the book are scaleable to different levels. Very young children may be overwhelmed by some of these activities though as they do tend to test deductive and inductive thinking skills. The books in this series also come with 200 stickers to use as incentives.

Activities: 1. Look up the word freedom in a dictionary and thesaurus. Help your child notice that the word independence is synonymous for freedom.
    2. Have your child on a sheet of paper list all the synonyms for freedom. Spend some time with your child discussing the meaning of freedom in your own lives.
    3. Read a book that illustrates the causes of the American Revolution so that your child at least is able to trace the basic reasons for the movement towards independence.

Why we Have to get the Troops Out of Iraq
The hundreds of thousands of protesters who came out throughout the world on Saturday
were demanding a US and British withdrawal from Iraq.
The protesters are right that we have to get US ground troops out of Iraq.
The issue is not the rights and wrongs of the war. There were no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. There was no nuclear program, and the mushroom clouds with which Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and Rice menaced us were figments of their fevered imaginations, no more substantial than the hateful internal voices that afflict schizophrenics.
But that is not a reason to get the ground troops out now.
The issue is not the lack of operational cooperation between the secular, socialist, Arab nationalist Baath Party of Iraq and the religious fanatics of al-Qaeda. There was no such operational involvement. Khalid Sheikh Mohammad and Abu Zubaydah were captured before the Iraq War, and told their American interrogators that al-Qaeda had refused to cooperate with Saddam Hussein.
