Helping Your Fifth-Grade Child Learn Social Studies
This year your child will study how Europeans and other immigrants explored, settled, and developed the Americas, and will learn about the Indian civilizations that met the explorers. He or she will discover how the new country of the United States emerged from this process of exploration and settlement. Your child will also come to understand how this new nation was created by the blending of cultures and ideas from around the world. Here are some everyday activities you can do with your child to help promote interest in social studies.
Exploring geography
  • Help your child see that geography still determines many of our activities. Living near a lake or river, mountains, farms, a desert, or a forest affects what we do. Together, make a list of common leisure activities done in your region, such as fishing, skiing, swimming, farming, do-it-yourself fruit picking, or sledding. Then make another list of activities you can't do because of the geography of where you live. Make a list of five places outside of your community that were mentioned in the newspaper, or on television or radio. Using a globe or flat map of the country or the world, work with your child to locate as many of these places as you can.

I thought that I would share with you some of the e-mails I've received. If you know any answers to some of the inquiries, please e-mail me with your answers and I'll post them here. I just wanted to send an e-mail to tell you that I really like you web page and that it has a lot of good information.
Thanks again, Jason
I have been trying to find out how many people died in the American Revoloution. Specifically: American Soldiers, British soldiers (including Hessians and colonial loyalists) and lastly, civilians. If you know the answers to these questions could you let me know? I have seen some great web pages today on that war but none have any of the above facts listed.
Sincerely and gratefully yours, Phil Murray
P.S. Do you also by any chance know how many men served under the "Swamp Fox" (Francis Marion?) in South Carolina during the Revolution? I just found out that I am descended from someone who was in his unit. Thanks again. Dear Mr. McGranahan -

New Microsoft Program offers Homework Tools but It's Clumsy to Use
by Walter S. Mossberg, The Wall Street Journal
In many American households, homework is a big problem. Teachers often load up students with far more of it than I recall from my own prehistoric school career. And parents, squeezed for time by dual careers and rusty because of rapidly changing curricula, find it is hard to help.
Also, today's students often have so many after-school activities that even with the best work ethic, it is a struggle to get through hours of homework and still get enough sleep before the absurdly early start time at many high schools. Taking note of this daily homework battle, Microsoft has decided to help - or at least to see whether it can make some money by addressing the problem. The software colossus has just introduced Microsoft Student 2006, designed to make it easier for middle-school and high-school students to attack homework efficiently by gathering homework resources in one place on the computer. Microsoft Student, which runs only on PCs equipped with DVD drives and Windows 2000 or Windows XP, is priced at $100, though it is less expensive at places such as Amazon.com, which sells it for $80.
