Homework Help: Social Studies: U.S. History: Washington Crossing Delaware
by Justin Baker When winter came in 1776, the hope for fighting for independence vanished. Many men left Washington because they thought his plans were foolish. He had a very trustworthy army on the night they crossed the Delaware River. They had hope in their leader George Washington. George Washington planned to attack Trenton on Christmas night. Many thought this plan was crazy, others were going to fight with George Washington to the end. They were the most reliable army that Washington had ever had. Most of Washington's men were injured, starving and cold. It was Christmas; snow covered the land as if it was a blanket. That night George Washington and his troops crossed the river. This well planned fight helped us in winning revolutionary war. This revolution would have ended if Washington and his troops waited for the Hessians to attack. This is because when the water froze up and turned into ice, Britain and Hessians force would unite and would overpower the Americans. There was nothing to lose. They were already losing the revolution its might as well fight until death. The British army and Hessian army had an overwhelming number of troops over that will overcome the Americans. Washington's great ideas assisted in revolutionizing our government. Our government today knows, as the Federal Government is very effective in many ways. Our government power is divided into three branches which is better than having a monarchy. A king would have owned this land if this crossing wasn't made. This government is so regimented that the United States of America still uses this form of government today.

History of Adoption
After the Civil War
War often changes many aspects of daily life. In America, the way adoption works changed after each big war. This was partly because war kills many adults and leaves numerous orphans behind. Society must find new and better ways to help these children as it re-builds. More than 200 years ago, after the Revolutionary War, orphans in the big U.S. cities grew up in institutions called "poorhouses" without a real family. Adoption was very rare. After the Civil War, Americans were encouraged to adopt children and our current system began to develop. The "orphan trains" are a strange chapter in adoption history. Between 1854 and 1929, about a quarter of a million (250,000) children from New York City and other big Eastern cities were placed on trains to be adopted by farm families in the Midwest and West. Some went to Canada and Mexico, too, and had to learn how to speak Spanish or French. Orphan Trains
Lee Nailling's dad was not able to take care of his large family by himself. So, in 1926, the children were all sent separate ways, and Lee and his brother George were taken to an orphanage. After two years at the orphanage, the boys learned they were going on a train ride. The train they were to ride was one of the orphan trains, which carried more than 200,000 children from crowded eastern cities to new families in the midwest, between 1854 and 1930. Lee Nailling's remarkable story is told in the book
