Golden book History, Geography and Climate of Reunion Island HISTORY Although discovered(found) by the Arabic navigators in the X-th century, the island remained deserted until the arrival of the Frenchmen in the XVII-th century. France not having been able to colonize the big island (Madagascar), she(it) took up this small island at about the year 1640. It is the vessel "Saint Alexis" who landed the first inhabitants. In 1649, the island is called "Bourbon". In 1767, Louis XIV gives up the island to the company of India. At the end of 1793, the beginning of 1794, further to the French revolution, the excitement is born on the island engendering a change of name: "Reunion". From the end of the XVII e century, the first villages build up themselves (Saint-Denis, Saint Paul, saint - Suzanne), whose inhabitants cultivate some coffee(cafe) intended for the metropolis.

The 1958 Zoology Class met on 11 May for an excellent lunch at The Dolphin, Below Bar, organised by Dick Barker. This was followed by a tour of the Biological Sciences Department arranged by Dr Robert Walker and given by Niall Horn. Margaret Weiss (nee Edwards) joined the group for the first time from the States. Unfortunately Maureen Bannon (nee O'Shea) and Mike Mann were unable to attend and organisers were unable to trace Mike Reeve and Brian Thompson. If anyone is in touch with them, please contact the Alumni Office. Geology Alumni Fieldtrip, 12th-19th May 2002
The rain in Spain fortunately stayed away!
The first Geology Alumni Reunion Fieldtrip saw 36 people travel to southern Spain for a week in May - to revisit old haunts familiar to most from their Second Year foray in Carboneras on the Cabo de Gata. Although dominated by graduates of the past three years, some of the former Geology undergrads and postgrads traced their Southampton roots back over a decade. It was remarkable how well and how quickly the group gelled - no doubt aided by al fresco dining and copious cervezas. Informality was the order of the day and, blessed with constant sunshine, individual nuclei peeled off and did their own thing. There were only two or three 'organised' activities - a day trip to the Alhambra in Granada, mineral collecting at the Garnet Volcano of El Hoyazo, and scrambling (literally!) through the gypsum caves at Sorbas.

It was a great programme, I really enjoyed it all, especially the House of Commons dinner and the walk. I will never forget standing on the House of Commons terrace after dinner, such a still, warm summer night, with the full moon rising and great conversation. Or talking with Professor Ken Minogue, whom I was seated opposite. A great privilege. And please tell Professor Derek Diamond that it felt like I learned more on his walk about London than I did in my three year Geography degree. He is an excellent teacher/communicator/field trip leader." - Sandra Hartley, BSc Geography 1968
