Researching Your Markets
by Tina Morgan
There are now more potential markets than ever before, both online and in print. The prospect of being able to submit something and knowing that there are enough markets out there for someone to eventually buy it, is an exciting thought.
But you can greatly increase your chances for acceptance by simply taking the time to research your intended market. By knowing what an editor prefers, or what intended audience a magazine is aiming at, or even simply knowing the editor's name - these things can help the person reading your query letter to see you more as a professional, rather than just another writer, who is currently submitting his piece to everyone in the yellow pages.
Whether you are writing fiction or non-fiction, the research techniques are the same. If you are writing on spec (that is, not writing a piece that was specifically requested by an editor, but writing because you want to write it), then you must determine where to market your work. For fiction, genre and length are the primary determining factors. For non-fiction, topic matter, technical level of subject matter and length will decide where your article will sell.
The three easiest places to research your market will be your local library, bookstores or newsstands and the Internet.

  • The Internet is being accepted faster than television was in the 1950's.
A Nielsen Media Research survey conducted in June '98 estimated that 70.5 million Americans older than 16 are currently online users. Almost 20 million American households have access to the Internet. By 2002, that figure is expected to reach almost 60 million. (That's close to the 70 million U.S. households with cable TV).
By 2005, it's estimated that 75% of U.S. household will have Internet-capable computers. That compares to 18% that have Internet connections today.
About 36 million Americans read news on the Internet at least once a week - triple the number that went online for news two years ago.
Almost 86% of publicly-held U.S. firms have web sites.
Traditional media companies from Hollywood studios and TV networks to video game developers and major news organizations all have sites on the Internet.
Original content on the Internet is growing in every category, from entertainment to children's sites to online journalism.
Web sites on the Internet feature elements WGA writers have long been using: video, audio, animation, stills.

The Internet has dramatically changed the way writers do business. From market research to manuscript submission, from researching an article to finding an agent, writers are presented with a wealth of online resources and opportunities.
Sometimes all that information can be overwhelming. That's where Writing.com comes in. This book was written to sort out all the confusing information available to writers, and help writers determine what works and what doesn't. It's written for both the new writer who wants to launch a writing career and the experienced writer who wants to tap into new markets and increase productivity and sales. Here's a sampling of what Writing.com offers:

Purpose
I have put this course together for two main reasons:
  • I have attended a number of U3A courses and have gained a broader understanding of the course topic by undertaking additional research using the web. In no way should this be interpreted as a criticism of the content of those courses; as a course writer/developer, I understand the limitations on content and time that impinge on the course writer. However, given a 'start' into the topic by the course content I have been able to undertake additional private research around the topic. I have found that this has significantly increased my enjoyment of the course. I have also observed that few of my fellow course attendees have understood the breadth and depth of information available to them via the web or the relative ease by which it can be accessed. Many U3A members have an ambition to undertake private research into some topic of interest. Previously life commitments have prevented them from undertaking this research. These potential researchers might benefit from a quick overview of researching techniques when using the Internet.
I have a third interest in preparing this course; there is a move within some U3A groups to supplement the way U3A courses are presented. It is becoming more difficult to recruit course writers/presenters and at the same time many U3A members have personal computers and access to the Internet. This new movement is to develop ways in which U3A members can undertake "their own" course development using the Internet.

Researching your Topic on the Internet Once you have selected the topic for your paper, and have formulated an opinion or argument about it, it is important to collect as much information as you can that will be relevant to your paper and to supporting your argument. Research can appear to be a daunting task, especially for the student who does not know where to begin. The most important thing to know is where to find the information you need. With the amazing growth of the Internet, it is easier than ever to find a wealth of information on almost any topic. But, like any kind of research, to avoid frustration, you need to know where to look and how to begin your search. Internet research should never completely replace library research, and while you are at Rice, you should be sure to familiarize yourself with the resources available at Fondren Library. By clicking on the link to Fondren Library , you will arrive at the library's home page, where you will find access to Libris and Webcat, Fondren's online search tools, as well as links to encyclopedias, dictionaries, other online search tools in a variety of disciplines, and important services offered by the library, like book recalling and interlibrary loan. Please use this page and get to know Fondren's resources. This will greatly enhance any research topic.
