The Republican Party was established at Ripon, Wisconsin in 1854 by a group of former members of the Whig Party , the Free-Soil Party and the Democratic Party . Its original founders were opposed to slavery and called for the repeal of the Kansas-Nebraska and the Fugitive Slave Law . Early members thought it was important to place the national interest above sectional interest and the rights of individual States.
Over the next few years the Republican Party emerged as the main opposition party to the Democratic Party in the North. However, it had little support in the South. The party's first presidential candidate was John C. Fremont in 1856 who won 1,335,264 votes but was defeated by the Democratic Party candidate, James Buchanan

It's 1855. What party are you voting for? The Democrats, Republicans, Whigs or the Know-Nothings? The Know-Nothings started in 1849 as a secret organization with an anti-immigrant agenda. Reacting against the large tide of immigrants arriving in the 1840s, they actively promoted "natives," which they defined as American-born Protestants. Because a large number of immigrants were foreign-born Catholics from Germany and Ireland, the Know-Nothings also took an anti-Catholic stance. The party received its unusual name from the fact that when members were asked about the organization, they were supposed to reply "I know nothing." By the mid 1850s, the Know-Nothings had grown in popularity and adopted their official name, the American Party. At the height of their brief period of power, they had many members in Congress and ran their own presidential candidate in 1856, Millard Fillmore (who was a U.S. president in 1850-53). The issue of slavery ultimately split the party, however. Most of the antislavery Know-Nothings joined the Republican Party while the Southern proslavery Know-Nothings joined the Democratic Party. [Last update 00may28] Relative Political Party Strength
in Presidential Elections

An analysis of each state's preferences in Presidential Elections
In the 1960 Brookings Institution study The Politics of National Party Conventions (by David, Goldman and Bain), there was an attempt made to determine which states were Democratic, Republican or Competitive (neither) in presidential elections over periods made up of 8 presidential elections each. The criteria that was used to determine this was as follows: if a party's presidential candidate won a given state in at least 6 of the 8 elections each period covered, that state was considered to be the bastion of the respective of one or the other party; if a party's presidential candidate won a given state 5 times out of the 8 or less, the state was deemed to have been "Competitive". We will apply the Brookings Institution criteria for the period of 1968-1996 and add refinements based on each state's preferences during the last 2-3 Presidential Elections. For Democratic and Republican States (one party carried the state in 6 out of the last 8 elections) - from most to least attached to a given political party:
  • if a party also won the last three presidential elections ('88, '92 and '96), it would be considered

Why I Am Not a Republican (Part One): My unsuccessful quest to become politically mainstream I've never been one to fit in a box. Although I've tried, my legs usually get cramped and sooner or later, I'm bound to start kicking. This describes my plight with political party affiliations. Perhaps one of the necessary evils of the world, political parties and all that they entail give me an enormous migraine headache. I can certainly understand why Bill Gates gives equal donations to both the Democrats and the Republicans. When you're rich, you don't have to be affiliated with a political party. My ultimate decision to wallow in the shade of seeming political ambiguity is not without pretext. I grew up in a home with Christian Democrat parents. I couldn't even explain that one to you if I tried (and I will). However, when asked at one point by my high school history teacher about my family's political affiliation, without hesitation, I answered, "We tend to vote for Democrats because although we are against many of the things for which Democrats stand, we think the racial issues supercede the morality issues. " At the time I don't think I understood what I was saying, but even now, I agree that most Christian Democrats think this way.

REPUBLICAN PARTY Republicans are proud of the leadership provided to our country by President George W. Bush. Here in California, the Republican Party is following President Bush's lead so that we may also earn the privilege to be the political party that leads all Californians. We seek to elect a governor that will lead all Californians who want to restore California to its once proud status as a model state for world class education, sound infrastructure, environmental protection and economic prosperity. California can no longer afford budget deficits, blackouts, increases in our car taxes, lost jobs, and closed businesses. We need a Governor who will work with everyone to make California a leader once again. Electing Republicans to office in California:

For six weeks, Democrats thought they had a chance to retake control of the House of Representatives this fall. The dream began on April 25, when Republican Rep. Wes Watkins announced that he was retiring. There was no way Republicans could hope to hold on to Oklahoma's traditionally Democratic Third District; they held it now only because Rep. Watkins, who had originally been elected to Congress as a Democrat, switched parties. Democrats believed they could very well narrow the GOP's 11-seat majority even before November, thus gaining momentum for themselves. They were already following their state-of-the-art campaign strategy in a special election in New Mexico. They had recruited an airbrushed multi-millionaire, State Sen. Phil Maloof, to run and were presenting him as the candidate of the working man; meanwhile, Hillary Clinton, no less, was saying that a vote for the Republican, Heather Wilson, was a vote for Newt Gingrich.

Now, this isn't going to be another column about the differences between Republicans and conservatives. I'll probably write that one tomorrow. political operation, let alone one that will remake your whole life. An imperfect vessel for our political ideals, a political party will always disappoint if you're measuring with the yardstick of the ideals themselves. If, for example, the Catholic Church can't always live up to its principles even when it has "staffers" who've sworn their bodies and souls to the institution, how can we expect a political party largely made up of folks who have day jobs to be perfect? One theory I have is that since liberals are so prone to the pathology of victimization, they have a tendency to cling to whichever status they perceive to be the most "victimized." Ever since the Florida recount, Democrats have been acting as if merely having a "D" on your voter-registration card signifies you as a suspect class in America. So, in the proud liberal tradition of boasting about the source of your low self-esteem, Democrats have absorbed their party into their identities. It's like a bad comic-book superhero whose costume bleaches into his skin and becomes a permanent part of his DNA. ipso facto , immanentize. So we heard, day after day after day, that all problems would be solved with a Democrat in office. Health care, a roaring economy, whatever: These things simply depended upon the physical presence of a Democrat in the Oval Office. John Edwards insisted that, merely by the force of John Kerry's being in charge, new, strong, loyal, steadfast, and incalculably valuable "allies" will emerge

A couple of weeks ago the former KGB apparatchik who is now president of Russia, Vladimir Putin - apparently as a step toward what he contradictorily called a "dictatorship of law" - took aim at another Valdimir: the owner of the only meaningful independent television operation in that country, Vladimir Gusinsky. That was an attack on speech/press freedom, and it may yet succeed. This week, Putin is aiming at yet another Vladimir and many others like him. Putin's new attack is on freedom of association. Since control by the communist party crumbled a decade ago, Russia's chaotic political system has given birth to nearly 200 parties, some of which look like real parties in western political terms (e.g., the communists, the pro-Putin Unity Party), while others are little more than small cliques surrounding individual politicians or would-be reformers. But President "dictatorship by law" Putin is apparently too impatient to wait for a free political process to eliminate the kinks in Russia's party system. Like his attacks on free speech/press, he now intends to attack and destroy the small political parties. Putin has proposed a law containing at least two provisions that would spell the end of the small parties. They would have to compete in certain elections regularly, or be shut down. They would have to have more than one hundred members in at least forty-six of the country's regions.

A Democrat and a Republican
Screwing with the System: Society would have you to believe that politics is like a baseball game. You're either a Cardinals fan or a Royals fan. As if the Democrats and Republicans were tribes or that they actually stood for something. The reality is that both parties have control and to pick one at the exclusion of the other is to cut yourself off from half of government. It doesn't mean that I like the Democrats, or that I like the Republicans. It means that I choose to put my biases aside in order to be a cause meaningful change. What matters is who is best for the country, not what party you belong to. And by being a member of both parties, it forces them to work harder that being a member of a third or forth party. Both of these pictures were taken the same year, actually within a month of each other. The picture with Hillary was taken at the 1992 Missouri State Democratic convention. This was before Clinton won the Democratic Primary. Hillary was the keynote speaker. This convention was my first experience with party politics. In many states there are no primaries. The party members elect their candidates. But to be a party member, all you have to do is show up. I managed to get elected as a delegate all the way to the state convention where I cast my vote for Bill Clinton. So I became one of the 400 or so Democrats in Missouri who actually voted in the primaries for president.

President Bill Clinton is more Republican than Republicans
Being a Republican isn't just joining a party, it's a point of view. And when you look at the issues Republicans stand for and then compare our elected officials to our beliefs, President Clinton is the one who is delivering what traditional Republicans are looking for. To me it's more important what a candidate does and what he stands for than what party label he runs under. Gore 2000 - The Web's First Gore 2000 Site
Republicans for Gore
- Why Republicans should support Al Gore
What is a Republican?
What is a Republican and what do we believe in? A Republican is supposed to be for fiscal responsibility, small government, keeping the government out of people's private business, traditional family values, and a sense of basic morality. The government and the Republican Party are here to serve the people, not the other way around. The Republican Party is here to serve us, not for us to serve them. We are not here to be loyal to the party, but for the party to be loyal to us. It's not just about talking the talk, but you have to walk the walk. And when you look at President Clinton's Record , you'll see a record that would make any Republican proud.
