By late 1988, however, other DUP leaders had persuaded Mirghani that the Islamic law issue was the main obstacle to a peaceful resolution of the civil war. Mirghani himself became convinced that the war posed a more serious danger to Sudan than did any compromise over the sharia. It was this attitude that prompted him to meet with Garang in Ethiopia where he negotiated a cease-fire agreement based on a commitment to abolish the September Laws. During the next six months leading up to the June 1989 coup, Mirghani worked to build support for the agreement, and in the process emerged as the most important Muslim religious figure to advocate concessions on the implementation of the sharia. Following the coup, Mirghani fled into exile and he has remained in Egypt. Since 1989, the RCC-NS has attempted to exploit DUP factionalism by coopting party officials who contested Mirghani's leadership, but these efforts failed to weaken the DUP as an opposition group.

The SPLA was formed in 1983 when Lieutenant Colonel John Garang of the SPAF was sent to quell a mutiny in Bor of 500 southern troops who were resisting orders to be rotated to the north. Instead of ending the mutiny, Garang encouraged mutinies in other garrisons and set himself at the head of the rebellion against the Khartoum government. Garang, a Dinka born into a Christian family, had studied at Grinnell College, Iowa, and later returned to the United States to take a company commanders' course at Fort Benning, Georgia, and again to earn advanced economics degrees at Iowa State University.

COX NEWS SERVICE September 25, 2004 "The Republican Party does not have the head count to elect a president without the support of religious conservatives," Falwell said at an election training conference of the Christian Coalition. Falwell said evangelical Christians are now "by far the largest constituency" within the Republican Party, their route to dominance beginning in 1979 with his founding of the Moral Majority, a precursor to the Christian Coalition. "I tell my Republican friends who are always talking about the 'big tent,' I say make it as big as you want to, but if the candidate running for president is not pro-life, pro-family . . . you're not going to win," he said. "Big tent" was coined by the late Lee Atwater as chairman of the Republican National Committee after the 1988 presidential election to summarize his view that the party should expand beyond its conservative base to include moderates. Falwell expressed confidence in a Bush victory over Democratic Sen. John Kerry, adding, "You cannot be a sincere, committed born-again believer who takes the Bible seriously and vote for a pro-choice, anti-family candidate."

    Republican political parties?

    No Right Turn
has acquired a list from the Electoral Commission of political parties registered to contest this year's election. There are two political parties that probably have republican policies - namely " The Republic of New Zealand " and the " Republic Aotearoa New Zealand Party
Personally, I don't beleive that republicanism can be carried forth on a party platform. This is because under MMP elections have really become, more than ever, a market place for issues. And in this the market of issues, republicanism is not the foremost concern for the public at a general election. I've argued before that the Treaty of Waitangi is by far a more pressing constitutional issue than republicanism to the public - and, as the surge in support for the National Party post Orewa has shown, the public will actually vote on it. Political parties advocating a republic hence face an uphill battle.
We've seen this before in the ill-fated Republican Party, which failed to even crack 500 votes, ironically less than the number of paid-up members required to get party funding (off the top of my head). Rumour was that the Republican Party (note capital 'R') followed 'Republicanism' in the United States tradition - and so their advocacy of 'Republicanism' wasn't what most New Zealanders would understand it to be.

E-Mail This Article Published on Wednesday, January 12, 2005 by CommonDreams.org The Imminent Demise of the Republican Party by David W. Orr Following the election of 2004, much has been made of the weaknesses of the Democratic Party, even its possible end. But it has escaped the notice of our blow-dry television pundits and political observers alike that the Republican Party, in the full blush of triumph in control of all the branches of government and large sections of the media, stands on the edge of certain extinction. The reasons grow daily more evident. Over the past three decades, the moderate, business-oriented party of Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, and Dwight Eisenhower was captured by its extreme right-wing thereby becoming a party dominated by ideologues, increasingly divorced from unmovable facts. But no organization, political party, or nation can long survive by ignoring realities of ecology, social justice, law, economics, and true security. Sooner or later, it will step off the proverbial curb into onrushing traffic of events, forces, and trends that it refused to see. The Republican Party has already stepped into the road. The question is not whether it will survive as presently constituted, but what else will be destroyed as it collapses in ruin and ignominy, sooner than later. Beneath the noisy spin of its media echo chamber, the true platform of the Republican Party, its future epitaph, is founded on denial. The rules of the Republican Party of George Bush, Dick Cheney, Karl Rove, Tom Delay, and their brethren are these:

Paid lobbyists sit in committee rooms and write legislation to alleviate the suffering of billionaires! Hypocrisies shine like cat turds in the moonlight! O Mark Twain, where art thou at this hour? Arise and behold the Gilded Age reincarnated gaudier than ever, upholding great wealth as the sure sign of Divine Grace. The concentration of wealth and power in the hands of the few is the death knell of democracy. No republic in the history of humanity has survived this. The election of 2004 will say something about what happens to ours. The omens are not good. Whenever I think of those New Yorkers hurrying along Park Place or getting off the No.1 Broadway local, hustling toward their office on the 90th floor, the morning paper under their arms, I think of that non-reader George W. Bush and how he hopes to exploit those people with a little economic uptick, maybe the capture of Osama, cruise to victory in November and proceed to get some serious nation-changing done in his second term. This year, as in the past, Republicans will portray us Democrats as embittered academics, desiccated Unitarians, whacked-out hippies and communards, people who talk to telephone poles, the party of the Deadheads. They will wave enormous flags and wow over and over the footage of firemen in the wreckage of the World Trade Center and bodies being carried out and they will lie about their economic policies with astonishing enthusiasm.

"This is just shameless," a former Justice Department official, Bruce Fein, said. He said the political posturing on both sides may actually encourage more leaks. "It really is staggering. It undercuts their own claim that it's serious business, because it makes people in the bureaucracy think the only issue is whether you have enough politicians lined up behind you."

Stick Around for Organized Labeling of Political Issues
AgeVenture News Service August 11, 2004
Just in time for the political mudslinging that traditionally accompanies presidential elections, a national survey has uncovered some surprising facts about the way voters “label” their own politics - as well as the views of their political rivals.
The new study, commissioned by DYMO, the leading producer of labelmakers for the home and office, polled Democrats, Independents and Republicans across the country and examined the many labels associated with political affiliation.
Here's how the DYMO survey helped organize our, otherwise complicated, political landscape.
    • The People Behind The Labels
Three-quarters of Americans reveal that they are a member of a traditional political party - registered as either Democrats or Republicans. Surprisingly, upwards of twenty-five percent of registered voters label themselves as Independent.
    • Independent voters
are almost evenly divided along gender lines, but the traditional parties aren’t nearly as uniform - while Republicans are more likely to be male, 2 in 3 Democrats are women. In terms of age, Republicans average three to four years older than their Democratic and Independent counterparts (50, as opposed to 47 and 46, respectively).
    • Labels We Love
Democrats overwhelmingly see themselves as “idealistic” and “patriotic” - nearly 80 percent choose these descriptors to define their point of view. In describing their political nemesis, 2 in 5 Democrats are quick to label Republicans as “pro-military.” Their view of Independents? While 40 percent of Democrats feel that Independents are “unpredictable,” many apparently don ’t know what to make of the party - 39 percent claim not to have any opinion of Independent voters.
