THE REPUBLIC OF GEORGIA
"We are in ferment, We are not yet wine, We are still just machari." (new wine)
Vladimir Mayakovsky, 1924 If the famed Georgian-born poet, Vladimir Mayakovsky, were alive today, he would find that the words from his metaphorical poem, "Vladikavkaz-Tiflis," still holds true as Georgians cling optimistically to their newly independent state. Of course, Georgians have tasted independence before but their history has been plagued by numerous conquerors throughout the centuries. It is the unique geography of Georgia that explains her predicament. Traditional Balcony Homes
Overlooking Sulphur Baths, Tbilisi Georgia is located between the Black Sea to the west and close to the Caspian Sea to the east. Eighty percent of the land is covered by mountains, mainly the Greater Caucasus Mountains to the north and the Lesser Caucasus Mountains to the south. Between these massive mountain ranges and land-locked seas lay a narrow belt of fertile lowlands that form strategically important east-west and north-south routes between Europe and Asia. Throughout the ages, Greeks, Romans, Parthia, Byzantium, Khazars, Arabs, Genghis Khan, Tamerlane, Persians, the Ottoman Turks and more recently the Russians have sought to control the Georgian kingdom and even today, a power struggle continues as the West seeks a route to access the vast oil reserves of the Caspian region.
Although beset by civil war in 1992, Georgia's most amazing trait is the resilience of her people to endure in the face of adversity. Georgians now confront the same challenges of so many of their forefathers to rebuild anew. Great strides have been made but most people are experiencing tremendous economic hardships and living at a standard considerably below pre-independent times. Still, they are an optimistic people who will tell you that they prefer their freedom and have great hopes for their small country to become the "Switzerland" of Eastern Europe. While no one knows what the future holds, Georgia is certainly capable of realizing this dream for she has the natural resources and a tolerant but strong national identity.

What's New Documents Region Abkhazia in the News ... Contacts The Republic of Abkhazia covers 3,300 square miles between the eastern shores of the Black Sea and the crestline of the main Caucasus range; from the rivers Psou (in the north) and Ingur (in the south). To the north, Abkhazia is bordered by Russia and to the south by the Georgian provinces of Svanetia and Mingrelia. Around 74% of the territory is mountains or mountain approaches. The coastal valleys are humid and subtropical. At higher altitudes the weather ranges from moderately cold to such freezing temperatures that the snow never melts. The relatively small distance between seashore and mountains lends Abkhazia a strikingly contrasting landscape. The area was best known by non-Abkhazians for its prime resorts for vacationers from all over the Soviet Union, as well as for its major cash crops of tea, tobacco and citrus fruits. There are two cities: the capital Sukhum, with a population of more than 100,000, and Tkwarchal, an industrial center. There are three urban resorts; Gagra, Gudauta and Ochamchira; two rural spas: Pitsunda and Novy Afon; and 575 villages. The Abkhazian language belongs to the northwest Caucasian family spoken by only a few other peoples in the world: the Abazins (or Abaza), Adyghey, Kabardians and Circassians, all of whom live in the North Caucasus. Historically these peoples and other related groups in the North Caucasus maintained close ties until they were divided by Soviet colonial policy.

Early History of the Jews of Georgia
The city of Tbilisi was founded 1,500 years ago. It is the capital of the Republic of Georgia, a former Soviet republic. It is thought that the first Jews arrived in Western Georgia in the 6 th century, which at the time was ruled by the Byzantine Empire. Part moved to the Eastern Georgian regions, ruled by the Persians, where Jews were tolerated, as opposed to the suppression Jews suffered under the rule of the Byzantine Empire. From the Middle Ages through the first half of the nineteenth century a feudal system existed in Georgia. In this system, Jews belonged to the serf class (persons having a master). In the 18 th and 19 th centuries, Georgia was the scene of many wars. The Jews were deprived from their property. Whereas initially they sought and received protection from the feudal lords, to which they turned to escape immediate danger, the Jews were oppressed by them in a later stage. Being serfs, they were not forced to convert to Christianity. The old quarter of Tbilisi, 1987

Politics
n April 1991 the Republic of Georgia became independent from the Soviet Union, and since then Georgian political life has undergone considerable changes. National elections were held in 1989, 1990, 1992, and 2000. Inter-ethnic conflicts have prevented elections in a few administrative districts of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. In 1995 Georgia adopted its first democratic, multi-party constitution. According to the constitution, presidential elections are held every five years. Georgia is made up of sixty-three districts, as well as two autonomous republics (Abkhazia and Ajaria), both located on the Black Sea coast, and one autonomous region (South Ossetia). The constitution provides for a strong executive presidency and a 235-member unicameral parliament. The government was defined as an advisory body to the president, to whom it was directly subordinated.1 The principles of the constitution provide the state with a democratically based structure including the separation of powers, and anticipate the establishment of new institutions to protect basic freedoms and human rights. But democratic institutions have evolved slowly. The main political parties are: the Citizen's Union of Georgia or CUG (headed by Eduard Shevardnadze); the Georgian United Communist Party or UCPG; Industry will Save Georgia or IWSG; the National Democratic Party or NDP; Socialist Party or SPG; the Union for 'Revival' Party or AGUR; and the United Republican Party (URP).

Statement to the OSCE Permanent Council
Vienna, Austria
May 8, 2003 Released by the U.S. Mission to the OSCE (As delivered) Thank you, Mr. Chairman. The United States is deeply concerned about a shocking situation, that being the continuing violence against Jehovah's Witnesses and other religious minorities in Georgia. The latest episode of violence and intimidation, which was particularly shocking, involves members of the Jehovah's Witnesses and occurred in a Tbilisi courtroom on April 29th during the high-profile trial of political extremist and defrocked Orthodox priest Basili Mkalavishvili. The Jehovah's Witnesses plaintiffs in the case were victimized all over again in a courtroom ostensibly established to provide them with justice. Despite assurances from the Government of Georgia that adequate security would be provided for the trial, Georgian police stood by and laughed as Mkalavishvili and some thirty of his followers went on a violent, prolonged rampage, physically assaulting the lawyer for the Jehovah's Witnesses, those testifying on their behalf, and observers from both the OSCE and Human Rights Watch. Many others present in the courtroom were vilified and threatened, including a journalist from a local television station. An American diplomat and a local employee from the U.S. Embassy in Tbilisi attended the trial as observers and were forced to flee the courtroom for their own physical safety and were then harassed by the Georgian police stationed outside.

Abkhazia wants to become independent state
Abkhazia, a self-proclaimed republic in Georgia, has repeatedly announced that the UN document on delimitation of authorities between Tbilisi and Sukhumi is "unacceptable".
Sukhumi has no intention "to consider this document as it implies that the republic will remain a part of Georgia," stressed the unacknowledged republic's First Vice Premier and Defence Minister Raul Khadzhimba in his interview with RIA Novosti. "No one can force Abkhazia to turn off the road of building an independent state," Vice Premier said.
That is how Khadzhimba commented on the statement earlier made by the US government's special representative on Eurasian conflicts issues Rudolf Perina after his meeting with Georgian president Eduard Shevardnadze, which said that the American administration must convince or, at least, force Abkhazia's government to negotiate with the Georgian side on the so called "Boden document".
The draft of the document was developed by the UN former representative Dieter Boden. It implies that Abkhazia's conflict should be settled on the principle of Georgia's territorial integrity.

http://www.parliament.ge/CULTURE/GENINF/Cultur.html
General The richness of Georgian architecture is fully manifested in the existence of numerous churches. The history of this field of architecture is connected to the development of Georgian domed churches with a square central bay and four arms around it forming a cross . The versatile folk architecture is also worth being pointed out here. The Darbazi type of dwelling was typical to the Eastern regions, whereas the Oda type prevailed in the West of Georgia. Fortresses and towers were widespread in the mountainous regions. Georgian folk music, which has been evolving over three millennia, contributed particularly to the world culture. One of the most peculiar features of it is itss free polyphonic composition (2,5 or 4 voices). Georgian school of painting and icon painting, frequently exhibited in and outside of the country is also worth being pointed out here. The unique ancient frescoes reveal the specifics, traditions and skills of their creators. Georgian literature, especially poetry, is of non-less importance than the above-mentioned fields of culture. Georgian theatre and cinema are well known abroad. Even the "iron curtain", which had separated Georgia from the rest of the world. could not prevent it from recognising those. Georgian opera singers and musicians are also well-known overseas.

The Dancing Crane Georgian Dance Theater The Dancing Crane Georgian Dance Theater is a dedicated group of dancers, singers, musicians and theater professionals involved in the presentation of traditional performance arts from world cultures. The company specializes in Georgian dance and music and is committed to studying and accurately representing the folk traditions and their evolution into contemporary forms. The Dancing Crane company has been active since 1996 in presenting classes and performances of Georgian dances and music. Its director is long-time Warwick resident Victor Sirelson, formerly of the Aman Folk Ensemble of Los Angeles. The Dancing Crane Georgian Dance Theater is a result of his dream of bringing the beauty and wisdom of authentic and ancient traditions into his community and of building a bridge between this old culture and modern American society. The best contact is formed when people are personally engaged. With this aim in view, the ensemble has been formed as a unique mix of local talent and professional performers from the Republic of Georgia, rehearsing and performing together with Warwick as our base. The small country of Georgia in the heart of the Caucasus region has developed a dance tradition which rivals classic ballet in its demanding and refined technique, but which has a style all its own, containing strength, elegance and graceful movement evolved over centuries. The music, played on traditional folk instruments is based on ancient modes which help distinguish the dances as among the most beautiful in the world.
