Next Sakartvelo Georgia By Nino Gigineishvili Sadly, most people in America are not aware of the existence of many countries including the Republic of Georgia ( view the map ), a part of the former Soviet Union. Georgia possesses an unique history and culture, which is worth knowing. In order to appreciate the importance of this beautiful country, a brief historical overview is necessary. In the third century B.C., Georgia already existed as a monarchical state. King Parnaoz united and successfully ruled the country in the third and fourth centuries B.C. Unfortunately, the peace did not last for a long time: the neighboring tribes and countries constantly attacked Georgia because of its fertile land and strategic location on the trading crossroads of Europe and Asia, between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea. Throughout centuries, Georgia has been conquered and ruled by the Romans, Persians, the Arabs, the Mongols, and the Turks. At last, after years of slavery, the country became united once again as the Kingdom of Georgia under King Bagrat Bagrationi in 975 A.D. This was the beginning of the prosperity, which reached its peak during the reign of David Agmashenebeli, David the Builder, in the eleventh and twelfth centuries. The Bagrationi dynasty ruled the country until the annexation of Georgia by the Russian Empire at the beginning of the nineteenth century. Soon afterwards, the country was turned into many Gubernias, ruling districts established by the Russian Tzars, and in the twentieth century, under the rule of the soviet Union, it became the Soviet Socialist Republic of Georgia. Finally, in 1989 the country achieved its independence once again.

Country Profile

New Flag of Georgia Background:
Georgia was absorbed into the Russian Empire in the 19th century. Independent for three years (1918-1921) following the Russian revolution, it was forcibly incorporated into the USSR until the Soviet Union dissolved in 1991. Russian troops remain garrisoned at four military bases and as peacekeepers in the separatist regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia (but are scheduled to withdraw from two of the bases by July 2001).
Ethnic separation in Abkhazia and South Ossetia, poor governance, and Russian military bases deny the government effective control over the entirety of the state's internationally recognized territory.
Despite a badly degraded transportation network - brought on by ethnic conflict, criminal activities, and fuel shortages - the country continues to move toward a market economy and greater integration with Western institutions.

Before we traveled, we knew very little about Georgia. In fact, very few Americans know anything about Georgia and think it is part of Russia. Nothing could be further from the truth! Georgia is a fiercely proud, independent country with a history dating back thousands of years and a language with an alphabet that is one of the 16 original alphabets of the world. The "Golden Age" of Georgia was in the 11th and 12th centuries (before the Western European Renaissance), an era of great prosperity and flourishing arts. These are just a few of the interesting facts that we discovered on our trip to Georgia.

GEORGIA TODAY (Abstract) The Republic of Georgia is situated in the southern Caucasus at the crossroads of Europe and Asia. It is inhabited by people of various nationalities and faiths. There are more than fifty nationalities in the Caucasus. They speak Iberian-Caucasian languages, such as Kartvelian, Abkhazian, Adigean, Nakhian, and Daghestani ; Indo-European languages, such as Russian, Ukrainian, Armenian, and Iranian language groups; and Altaic languages, such as Turkish, Azerbaijani, and others. The peoples of the Caucasus practice a number of different religions. The majority of Georgians and Abkhazians, Russians, Ukrainians, and Armenians are Christians. The remaining nationalities are largely Muslim. Some Daghestanis are Shiite Muslims, others, including some Abkhazians, Ossetians, and Georgians are Sunni Muslims. There are also Jewish communities in Georgia. The Caucasus has always been inhabited by people diverse in ethnic origin and religion, who together formed a united Caucasian culture. History and geography have linked Georgians, Armenians, Azerbaijanis, and North-Caucasian peoples. Christian culture first developed in Georgian and Armenian languages centuries ago. The best traditions of Muslim culture found their way to Azerbaijan and North Caucasus. For example, the interest of linguists in centuries-old traditions of Arabic language in North Caucasus is reflected in numerous treatises on literature, philosophy, astrology, etc.

The University of Montana has established academic exchange agreements with Tbilisi Institute of Asia and Africa and Kutaisi State University in the Republic of Georgia. The first representative from Tbilisi was a scholar who came to UM to teach Persian language in the Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures in 2003. In the spring of 2004 two more scholars from both institutions came to UM for a semester of professional training and cultural immersion. The focus of the training was on American Studies, however, other subjects including Information Technology Training and electives in various departments were also part of the curriculum. In addition, two scholars followed in the fall of 2004, joined by two Persian instructors from the same Universities. As part of the program, scholars created informational and educational PowerPoint presentations and shared them with the campus community in a brown bag series. You may view the presentations here.

The seminar was a study of Costa Rican culture, education and rural economy, led by Glenn Ames, director of the Office of International Public Service and Outreach, and CLASE director Mike Padilla. Participants visited farms, schools and local industries.
Participants observed the practices of the farm families at Finca La Bella, who hosted the group for their weekend home stays. The families were limited-resource farmers who cultivated small plots of coffee, beans, bananas, and vegetables on steep hillsides primarily for home consumption. Milking by hand began at 5:00 a.m. and surplus milk was sold at the Monteverde Cheese Factory. The family farmers were contrasted to Tico Fruit, a large agribusiness complex, which produces fresh pineapple and orange juice at its huge plant near Muelle on the Atlantic coastal plain. Tico juices and concentrates are sold in Tampa, Florida.
