Fax: 202-682-1331 STATUS: There are about 2,700 species of snakes, of these 375 are venomous. In the United States, ten species are listed as threatened and seven species are listed as endangered under the Endangered Species Act.
DESCRIPTION: Snakes are elongated, limbless, flexible reptiles. Their body shape depends on the habitat in which they live. Aquatic snakes usually have a flattened body; those living in trees are long and slender with a prehensile tail while burrowing snakes tend to be compact. Snakes are found in a huge range of colors, from bright to dull. Brightly colored snakes are usually venomous, their coloration serving as a warning to predators, while dull colored snakes use their coloration for camouflage. Some snakes mimic the color and pattern of venomous snakes.
SIZE: Brahminy blind snakes are the smallest snake at two inches in length. The anaconda can reach lengths of 38 feet. LIFESPAN: In captivity, some species will live as long as 50 years.

Watchable Wildlife - Spring time is snake time
By Bob Garrison
Outdoor California May/June 1997 Back Be on the lookout for snakes on you outings during the spring and summer. the warm temperatures and longer daylight hours that stimulate people to get out and enjoy nature also trigger the same response in snakes. Pick up a field guide on California snakes before you head out - you will be surprised at the diversity and beauty of this much maligned group of animals. Snakes lead the list of most misunderstood and feared of all animals. The rattlesnake is the only type of snake in California that is dangerous to humans, but unfortunately, many harmless snakes have met untimely deaths at the hands of shovel-wielding humans. Snakes are an important part of the natural food chain, eating a great variety of prey, from rats and birds to frogs and other reptiles. Besides their ecological value, snakes offer the careful wildlife viewer a chance to watch one of nature's most efficient predators. If you encounter a rattlesnake, move away and watch for these tell-tale signs that you are too close. First, a rattlesnake, in fact most snakes, will coil into a defensive posture if they cannot escape by crawling away. If you continue to get closer, the rattlesnake will warn you with its distinctive rattle. Teh last defensive move of any snake is to strike. Unless you completely surprise a snake by accidentally stepping on it or reaching up onto a ledge, you will receive fair warning. Remember, all of these warnings are meant to help avoid conflict. If you use good wildlife viewing skills, you will be able to spot these behaviors early so you can step back and enjoy these animals with little risk.

Many people, quite sensibly, don't want to get too close. Even if you get close enough to see that it is a snake (it has no legs and has scales) there are still some difficulties. For example, Tiger snakes, despite their name, do not necessarily have stripes and there is a lot of overlap in the body colouration of the three species of Tasmanian snakes. The most reliable distinguishing feature is the middle head scale; however, it is not recommended that you get so close as to be able to use this feature! Pass the cursor over the species name to reveal the shape of the distinguishing middle head scale.

Many of Florida's reptiles are rare or are experiencing serious population declines. Habitat destruction, over-collecting, and deliberate or accidental killing have threatened several species with extinction. Florida has enacted laws to help protect certain animals and to ensure the survival of healthy populations .
American Alligator
Eastern Coral Snake Florida has more species of non-venomous snakes than any other state east of Texas. There are only 6 species of venomous snakes in Florida, so the venomous snakes are relatively rare. Southwest Florida's non-venomous snakes come in a variety of sizes and colors and are found in every habitat, including the backyard. However, many of Florida's snakes are becoming far less common, and some are now protected by law.

Home Trees Flowers Mammals ... Butterflies Links: WWF.GR Current Weather on Corfu. Corfu ( Kerkyra ) is a long irregular shaped island in the Ionian sea, it is about 53km. long, 24km. wide in the north and 4km. near its southern end. It has a total area of 592 square kilometres and a coastline of 217 kilometres. There is a permanent population of approx. 110,000, which swells dramatically during the summer months due to tourism. The Island is blessed with a Maritime / Subtropical climate i.e. mild winters and relatively cool summers compared to mainland Greece. The annual rainfall varies between 700mm and 1400mm, the majority of this in the winter months. Snow and frost are rarities on the island even though the Albanian and Greek mountains a few miles away have a covering of snow for most of the winter. As a result of this, humidity is high which gives rise to lush vegetation, which in turn harbours a great variety of wildlife. Downloads: Durrell Lecture 2002. With kind permission of Professor John Lawton The terrain is greatly varied with at least six peaks over 500meters the highest being Mount Pandokrator at 906 meters. On the northern slopes there is maquis, the typical Mediterranean terrain i.e. rocky with low scrub and grass etc. There is rich pasture/tillable land like the Ropa Valley which includes a golf course, coastal plains with salt water lagoons and large disused salt pans and the remainder of the Island comprising undulating hills carpeted in endless olive groves.
