Tarantula Care in Captivity
by Jody T. Barbeau and Martin J. Blasczyk
EDITOR'S NOTE:
I n popular culture, the tarantula has often been portrayed as being both repulsive and something to be feared. Typical misconceptions have given them a bad reputation, one that is not justified. These private animals are usually quite harmless when treated with respect, and often exhibit interesting behaviors. As of late, these large spiders are acquiring a more common place in the pet trade. The number of available species is growing rapidly due both to importation and private captive breeding programs. Tarantulas are relatively easy to keep, provided a few basic guidelines are kept in mind.
Housing Your Spider
W hen purchasing a tarantula one of the primary things to consider is the type of environment in which the spider is going to be maintained. Because all spiders are quite cannibalistic, each should be housed in an individual container. A quariums work quite well as suitable containers. They are easy to obtain and allow a certain amount of creativity when establishing a habitat for the spider. Aquariums are available in a variety of sizes, but the 2-1/2, 5, and 10-gallon aquariums adequately suffice for most species. Larger species like the goliath bird eater (Theraphosa blondi (Latreille)) often require a more spacious enclosure. A cover should always be provided for each container. It should be noted that the standard aquarium cover, whether a full hood or versa-style hood, is unacceptable because they do not offer a secure fit. Arboreal tarantulas, in addition to many of the terrestrial forms, can easily climb glass and make use of any openings or hinged parts to affect an escape.

PETS
Many child care providers who care for children in their own homes have pets. Pets can be excellent companions for children. Pets can meet emotional needs of children and others for love and affection. Caring for pets also gives children an opportunity to learn how to treat and be responsible for others. However, some guidelines for protecting the health and safety of the children should be followed.
  • All pets, whether kept indoors or outside, should be in good health, show no evidence of disease, and be friendly toward children. Dogs or cats should be appropriately immunized (check with the veterinarian) and be kept on flea, tick, and worm control programs. Proof of immunizations should be kept in a safe place. Pet living quarters should be kept clean. All pet waste should be disposed of immediately. Litter boxes should not be accessible to children.

Ohio State University Extension There are many benefits of having a companion animal and these benefits often outweigh the risks of pet ownership. The infections that are shared by people and animals are termed zoonoses. These zoonoses can be serious in immunocompromised people. The risks of contracting an infection can be minimized by following some basic preventative measures. In many of these diseases, the most likely sources of infection are not pets. Therefore, education on disease transmission and prevention are important to minimize the risk of infection from all possible sources.
Who are immunocompromised?
Immunocompromised people are more susceptible to acquiring infectious diseases and include individuals undergoing chemotherapy, such as for breast cancer, organ transplant recipients, and bone marrow recipients. This group also includes the elderly, especially those in nursing homes, hospices, and hospitals; infants; and children under five years of age. Medical conditions that compromise the immune system include: diabetes; HIV/AIDS; chronic renal failure; asthma; and long term steroid medication usage.

    Choosing a small pet
My daughter wants a pet for her sixth birthday. Having "downsized" her request from a pony to a dog to something smaller than a breadbox, I'm now wondering what's best: a rabbit, a guinnea pig, a turtle, or other sort of reptile (eg., geko). Any thoughts/suggestions/warnings? Linda My children have a guinea pig, a foster rabbit, geckos, fish, birds... No tortoise though! Do you want a pet that can be touched? Then your options are limited to the tortoise and the guinea pig. If you just want something to look at, then some kind of day gecko might do (the most common 'petable' varieties like the leopard gecko are active at night, and really shouldn't be handled by young kids), though I would actually recommend a fish tank. Of the 'petable' animals you listed, I would go for the guinea pig if your daughter is old enough to understand the rules about handling these little guys. (Buy a book.) They are quite social and if held a lot and hand-fed when young will grow up quite cuddly. Try and get a short haired female; females are more easily socialized and short hairs are MUCH easier to keep clean. (We currently have an angora-type fluffball so I speak from experience!) Of course, you have to recognize that you will be providing the actual care and that after the initial glow wears off you may have to make sure the gp continues to get consistent social interaction.

    http://www.ahc.umn.edu/rar/MNAALAS/Snakes.html
    Care of Snakes
Index of Topics General Veterinary Care Snakes are elongated, legless animals with dry, scale-covered skin. Their skin is unusually elastic, which allows it to stretch when large prey items are swallowed. Snakes are rather unique because of these features and because they lack moveable eyelids and external ear openings. Snakes may be only a few inches to several yards long. Snakes inhabit a wide variety of ecologic habitats: land, trees, underground, fresh water, and saltwater. They are found on every continent except Antarctica. No native snakes are found on the islands of Hawaii, Iceland, New Zealand and Ireland.
    Selecting a Pet Snake
Some snakes are rare, endangered and protected by law. These snakes may only be kept by zoos and legitimate herpetologists with the appropriate permits. This is also the case with venomous snakes, which should not, under any circumstances, be kept by the average hobbyist. The most common snakes kept by enthusiasts are the many and varied constrictor species (boas, pythons, rat and milk snakes, etc), and the racer, gopher and garter species. The husbandry and dietary requirements for these types of snakes vary considerably. Furthermore, some of the same species (notably the boa constrictors and pythons) reach very large sizes in captivity, and their considerable space requirements must be anticipated. Usually, an individual eager to own a snake already has a species preference in mind because of some familiarity with it (friend owns a snake of the same species, etc) or because of an inexplicable attraction to a species' physical appearance, size, activity or habits. Before you acquire a snake, you should carefully consider the following recommendations:
