Reptiles and Amphibians of the Eastern Caribbean Anita Malhotra and Roger Thorpe This addition to the Macmillan Pocket Natural History Series is the result of ten years of detailed research into the approximately one hundred species of reptiles and amphibians that inhabit the islands of the Eastern Caribbean. The authors describe the role of reptiles and amphibians in relation to local ecology and habitats. As elsewhere in the world, some species are under threat and attention is also given to protection and conservation issues. This book is ideal to carry around and provides a detailed and comprehensive reference source for those with a fascination for these creatures.

23. The Ball Python (Python Regius) - HerpStation - Reptiles, Amphibians, Herps, Her
general information and care sheet written by the editorial staff of reptiles amphibians Magazine.
http://www.petstation.com/ballpyth.htm
- SPECIES SHOWCASE - The Ball Python (Python regius)
The Ball Python is one of the most popular "pet shop" snakes, and frequently can be found even in stores which only sell a handful of herps. In the past, most "Royal" Pythons found in such pet shops were imported adults, and these did not always make the best pets. Imported specimens are frequently infested with parasites (one tell-tale sign of an imported python is small, brown, ticks embedded in the snake's scales), and often do not feed well in captivity. However, over the past few years a number of herpetoculturists have started to seriously work with this species, and captive-born and captive-bred juveniles are easy to find. These acclimate to captivity within a short period of time, and are highly recommended snakes for beginners.
NATIVE RANGE: western Africa, especially in the rain forests from Ghana to Cameroon
HABITAT: savannahs and forests
ADULT LENGTH: four to six feet, this is a stout, full-bodied snake
TEMPERATURE: Ball Pythons need an undertank heater or basking spot near the hide box (but not right over it), and the cage temperature should stay at 77-90F during the day. You can turn off the basking light and drop the temperature to 68-75F at night. These animals are active at night, so no special lighting is required.

Disadvantage: expensive outlay, animal welfare concerns.
Around the early to mid nineties there was a massive surge of interest in reptile and other unusual pets. Ordinary “pet superstores” like Pet City carried exotic creatures like iguanas, tarantulas and chipmunks. A lot of kids (including me) longed to be part of this new ‘pet craze’ and begged their parents for snakes and lizards as new pets. At eleven years old, I got ... 11.05.04 by

It seems nowadays as many people are fascinated by these creatures as repelled by them. Such exotic creatures as poison arrow frogs and rosy boas are being kept in captivity. It is possible to get hold of, with the correct licences, everything from monkeys and lemurs to anacondas to (this must be the height of stupidity) crocodilians, gharials, alligators and caimans, although, of course, rules on keeping such creatures are dependant on the country in which you live, although I have heard of someone in Glasgow (mate of a mate sort of thing) keeping a boomslang (a beautiful but extremely lethal venomous African snake) illegally. I also know someone with a fantastic collection of scorpions, spiders, exotic beetles and (!) cockroaches (just to gross you out, some of the cockroaches are the length of his hand) and a positively terrifying African giant millipede that is bigger than I care to remember.

About Mammals, Reptiles, and Amphibians About Mammals: Mammals are so named because after birth, young of all species, except opossums, nurse outside their mother's body. Newborn opossums nurse from within their mother's pouch for about 80 days. Diets of mammals vary. Rabbits, squirrels, prairie dogs, beavers, rodents, and deer eat only plants. Raptors, coyotes, red foxes, raccoons, badgers, shrews, striped skunks and bobcats prey upon members of these species. Opossums, coyotes, raccoons, and skunks eat a variety of animal and plant foods.
About Reptiles: About Amphibians: Amphibians begin life as eggs deposited in water. They later metamorphose (change bodies) into tadpoles and then into adults. Adults are more terrestrial than tadpoles and eggs, but still are dependent on water. Amphibians eat aquatic (water living) and terrestrial insects, tadpoles, fish, frogs, and toads. Amphibians also are important food items for wading birds, raptors, and some mammals, such as striped skunks and raccoons.

[available only online]
Introduction
Consistent with our long standing interests in conservation, education, research and the general well-being of amphibians and reptiles, the ASIH, HL and SSAR support the following guidelines and principles for scientists conducting field research on these animals. As professional biologists specializing in herpetology and concerned with the welfare of these animals, we recognize that guidelines for the laboratory care and use of domesticated stocks of amphibians and reptiles are frequently impossible to apply without endangering the well-being of wild-caught animals. Such guidelines may also preclude techniques or types of investigations known to have minimal adverse effects on individuals or populations (1, 20), and which are necessary for the acquisition of new knowledge. The humane treatment of wild vertebrates in field research is both an ethical and a scientific necessity. Traumatized animals may exhibit abnormal physiological, behavioral and ecological responses that defeat the purposes of the investigation (21, 25). It is of particular importance that animals which are captured and marked be returned to the wild without impairment to resuming their normal activities, and that habitats essential for these activities not be rendered unsuitable in the course of capture efforts.
