American Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists (ASIH)

[available only online]
Introduction
Consistent with our long standing interests in conservation, education, research and the general well-being of amphibians and reptiles, the ASIH, HL and SSAR support the following guidelines and principles for scientists conducting field research on these animals. As professional biologists specializing in herpetology and concerned with the welfare of these animals, we recognize that guidelines for the laboratory care and use of domesticated stocks of amphibians and reptiles are frequently impossible to apply without endangering the well-being of wild-caught animals. Such guidelines may also preclude techniques or types of investigations known to have minimal adverse effects on individuals or populations (1, 20), and which are necessary for the acquisition of new knowledge. The humane treatment of wild vertebrates in field research is both an ethical and a scientific necessity. Traumatized animals may exhibit abnormal physiological, behavioral and ecological responses that defeat the purposes of the investigation (21, 25). It is of particular importance that animals which are captured and marked be returned to the wild without impairment to resuming their normal activities, and that habitats essential for these activities not be rendered unsuitable in the course of capture efforts.

This page is for anyone with an interest in Herpetology. Here you can find basic information, humor, and hundreds of links sorted by subject. Including Herps in general, alligators, frogs, turtles, tortoise, snakes, hot snakes, lizards, along with different clubs, societies, and associations. FYI's Snakes and Such Most people who take the time to do a site, have knowledge of some sort, there are very few who are true experts in all the many facets of Herpetology. So by gathering hundreds of sites and attempting to sort them by interest, you should be able locate most anything you would ever need to know here. Please remember that sites that dealer's may also offer great information. However, I have not done business with any of these companies (my snakes were local unwanted pets). Always get references before buying. (i) - Sites offering information
(l) - These are link sites, much like this one
(p) - Personal sites, that mostly cover information about their personal pet
(r) - rescue
(s) - Sites that sell animals and/or supplies The Animal section contains almost 30 pages and 1,500 links along with information, about animals and insects ranging from the average house cat to elephants. Even a little animal humor is sprinkled around.

Welcome to the Western New York Herpetological Society!
Find Amphibian and Reptile Information
We are an organization of enthusiasts in the Buffalo and Rochester area with a shared interest in herps in the wild and as pets. What is a herp? The term herp refers to any reptile or amphibian. It is also short for herpetology, which is the branch of zoology that studies reptiles and amphibians. Our members are located all over Western New York, from Buffalo to Rochester and all other points in WNY! The club also provides reptile and amphibian care sheets and demonstrations to share amphibian and reptile information in our community.

http://www.wildherps.com/references.html
This is a partial list of the reference materials that I've used to identify wild herps or just learn more about them. It's not a particularly well-balanced or representative list, as it is heavily biased towards parts of the world that I have personally visited.
But first, you should check out Ellin Beltz's site that explains the meanings of the scientific names of North American amphibians and reptiles, because it is so cool. Then you can read more about names at the bottom of this page Handbook of Reptiles and Amphibians of Florida, Part One: The Snakes, Second Edition
by Ray E. Ashton, Jr. and Patricia Sawyer Ashton
Windward Publishing Inc, Miami, FL, 1988 This is a useful and well-researched field guide. Each species is illustrated with one or more color photos mixed in with the text, and a range map by Florida county as well as a smaller map showing the entire range in the U.S. The text is informative but a little dry. An uninspired layout makes it a little harder to find what you're looking for than it should be. Overall a good to very good field guide, but Tennant's newer one is even better.

Recent Introduction to Pet Reptiles Introduction to keeping reptiles as pets, including choosing a healthy reptile, species of lizards, snakes, or turtles that are commonly considered by beginners, and general information about keeping reptiles as pets. Good Reptiles for Beginners Many reptiles mass marketed by pet stores are among the most difficult to care for properly. Howver, there are some readily available reptiles that are suited to beginners. These animals are relatively low maintenance, compared to other reptiles, but they still need a significant investment in proper equipment up front. HSUS on Reptiles If the Humane Society of the United States gets its way, reptiles would be banned fron the pet trade. If you own reptiles, you should read what they are saying.
